All the 'Avengers: Endgame' Fan Theories That Were Actually Right - Esquire.com

Editor's Note: This post contains spoilers.

Marvel fans have spent an entire year trying to predict what might happen in Avengers: Endgame. Between the endless rumors, on-set photos, merchandise leaks, and everything else the MCU-obsessed internet dug up during the film's production, many central theories for the epic finale started to emerge. Not all of them came to fruition (no, Ant-Man did not kill Thanos by becoming small and shooting up his ass). But, many of the prominent theories that Mind Stone-wielding fans came up with actually came true in Endgame. In fact, some of the most surprising, risky predictions paid off in a big way.

Here are all the fan theories that actually came true in Endgame. Warning, massive spoilers ahead!!

Professor Hulk

Hell yeah. Say what you will about the MCU, but after films like Guardians and Thor: Ragnarok, Kevin Feige and Co. have not been afraid to go full weird. And in a beige, cookie-cutter blockbuster movie culture, that is really something to respect. One of Endgame's biggest weirdo elements is the new physical state of Bruce Banner. As many fans predicted, The Russo Brothers ended up adopting the "Professor Hulk" storyline for the big Infinity War sequel, wherein Bruce Banner and the Hulk finally put their differences aside and become one. The result? Mark Ruffalo is fucking huge. And green. And weirdly hot? He's got the body of the Hulk with the mind of Bruce Banner. This lasts for pretty much the entire film, making some parts of this moviegoing experience feel almost like a fever dream.

Time travel

Ever since some very revealing set photos leaked early-on in the production of Endgame, fans have been theorizing that time travel is pretty much a given for the new movie. I mean, how else are they going to reverse all the horrible things that Thanos committed? This theory has been the most prominent prediction. And, lo and behold, the fans were right. Endgame is a full-on Time Heist. Wreaking havoc on the past 22 films from the storied MCU, our Avengers are hopping through time and really screwing everything up. The plot holes are pretty tough to navigate, but on the surface, Endgame's quantum mechanics are fun as hell. We even got to see Tilda Swinton!

As fans predicted, Captain America is worthy to wield Thor’s hammer.

Marvel

Captain America wielding Thor's hammer

This one is less a prediction and more just something the fans have been begging for ever since the Avengers all met up back in 2012. We've seen Steve Rogers try to pick up the hammer. He nudged it a bit in Age of Ultron. But Endgame finally gives us the real deal. Cap is whooping ass with Mjolnir, bashing Thanos' huge face with it, and even spinning it around to take flight. As Inverse reported back in 2018, fans even asked Joss Whedon about the scene in Ultron when Cap attempted to lift the hammer. Whedon responded, "Did he fail? Or did he stop?" Turns out, the answer may have been the latter.

null
Thanos removes his armor to reveal his large body and get beheaded by Thor.

Marvel

Thanos gets defeated in the first act

As predicted on the r/FanTheories Subreddit, the Big Purple Man does indeed get killed very early on in Endgame. Eagle-eyed watchers of the film's trailers noticed, mostly from the different lengths (and colors) of Black Widow's hair, that there may be some time-jumping afoot in the big finale. They figured that Grimace might get killed within the opening 20 minutes of the film, but that killing him does not reverse the events of Infinity War, thus leaving the universe in pretty bad shape. They were right. Thanos gets his huge head chopped right off within the first act of the film, which only leaves the Avengers with more questions, and less hope. It's a mistake that makes Thor exile himself to drinking beer and playing Fortnite, ultimately resulting in the whole squad giving up on fixing the consequences of the Snap. That is, until our buddy Ant-Man comes along.

Tony Stark dies

Ever since the MCU kicked off way back in 2008, fans have been waiting to see how Tony Stark's narrative arc will come to a close. Over the course of the 22 films since, the topic has come to the surface a few times. He nearly died in the first Avengers, and with Robert Downey Jr.'s contract coming to a close, it seemed inevitable that Iron Man would die in Endgame. And it was. Stark sacrificed himself to gain control of the Infinity Stones and snap his fingers to reverse the course of history, but sealed his fate in the process. Everybody has been saying, it's either going to be Tony or Steve (or both) dying in the war against Thanos, and it turns out, Tony is the one to go. It's only natural that this would be RDJ's last outing as the character, since it's the end of the story he started so many years ago.

image
At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Captain America gives his shield to Falcon, presumably making him the new Captain America.

Marvel

Falcon becomes the new Captain America

In the comics, there is a huge precedent for other heroes picking up the mantle of Captain America. Many have held the shield over the years. In the MCU, it seemed that the two biggest possibilities for a new Cap would be Anthony Mackie's Falcon, or Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes. Fans have theorized ever since Stan held the shield back in the first Captain America movie that the so-called Winter Soldier would become the Star Spangled Man. But there was always the chance that we would have a Falcon Cap, and in the Endgame, it was Sam Wilson who gained control of the red, white, and blue shield.

Pepper Potts suits up

This theory has been floating around for a while, ever since a leaked selfie surfaced showing Gweneth Paltrow wearing an Iron Man suit. Pepper has suited up as "Rescue" in the comics before, and she briefly wore a suit in Iron Man 3 as well. In Endgame, we get Pepper fully armored, going haywire in the big splash-page battle of the film's finale. So the leaked image was real after all.

image
As many fans predicted, Doctor Strange did set in motion the one outcome he saw in which the Avengers beat Thanos.

Marvel

Doctor Strange knew there was only one way to win against Thanos

At the end of Infinity War, Doctor Strange looked at all the possible outcomes of Thanos' attack on The Avengers. He saw millions of possibilities, and said there was only one of them where they came out victorious. Well, fans have been banking on Endgame being the film where Dr. Strange's one winning outcome actually comes to fruition. And it did (of course). When Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange finally arrives back on the scene from his untimely dusting, he raises one finger to Stark, seeming to indicate that this is the only possible way for Earth (and half the universe) to prevail. But, of course, this would cost Tony Stark everything, as he snaps his fingers and ends his own life in the process. Destiny arrives.

Steve Rogers goes on to live his dream life with Peggy

This is the most exciting of the bunch, because it's one of the most out-there theories that actually came true. Once time travel became heavily hinted for the new film, fans believed that Captain America may choose to stay in the past, and finally have that fabled dance with his old flame, Peggy Carter. It actually came true! In the finale of the film, Steve says he is going to shoot back in time to return all the Infinity Stones, but he never comes back–kind of. The gang turns to find Captain America, as an old man, sitting on a bench, wistfully. He's lived his life the way he always wanted, by staying back in the '40s and reuniting with Peggy. How quaint. No word on what happened to the frozen version of himself in that timeline...

Trump: Jussie Smollett Case a ‘Disgrace to Our Nation’ - Variety

During a campaign rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin on Saturday night, Donald Trump called Jussie Smollett a “third-rate actor” whose highly-publicized case was a “disgrace to our Nation.”

“It’s MAGA country,” he told the crowd. “I didn’t hear that term until that third rate actor in Chicago went out and said I was beaten up by MAGA country, can you believe it?”

“Turned out to be a total lie,” he added.

Trump spoke as the White House Correspondents’ Dinner took place in Washington, D.C., an event he has skipped the past two years.

Smollett had been indicted on 16 charges in February for falsely claiming he had been the victim of a racial and homophobic attack, in which he alleged the attackers yelled “This is MAGA country.”

Chicago’s State Attorney controversially dropped all charges against the actor to the surprise of the city’s police officials and mayor, Rahm Emanuel, who called it an “abomination of justice.”

On Wednesday, Smollett’s “Empire” co-stars Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson signed a letter defending the embattled actor, along with other key cast members: “He is innocent…he is honest,” they wrote. Read the full letter here.

Avengers: Endgame: In its opening day, the newest MCU film shatters box office records. - Slate

Black Widow takes aim at another box office record.

Marvel

A lot of people all over the world decided to watch Avengers: Endgame on Friday, and they paid a lot of money for the privilege, Variety reports. In fact, in many countries, they paid more money than any person or group of people has ever paid to watch a single movie in a single day. Tony Stark and company earned $156.7 million dollars domestically on Friday, which shatters the previous record for a Friday opening of $119 million, held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Avengers: Endgame also broke the record for Thursday previews, taking in $60 million to The Force Awakens’ $57 million.

Internationally, the movie was also no slouch: In China, it earned $107.2 million on its Wednesday debut, the country’s largest single-day box office haul. It also broke the single-day box office records in Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Egypt, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Trinidad, the U.K., and Uruguay. What’s more, it set top opening day records in Indonesia, Malaysia, Netherlands, Greece, Portugal, Slovakia, Turkey, and the Ukraine. That’s 28 of the 193 member states in the United Nations, or just under 15%, the greatest international consensus anyone has achieved since we agreed we weren’t going to do anything about climate change.

Domestic weekend estimates for the film range from $310 million to $345 million, which will easily break Avengers: Infinity War’s current record of $257.7 million. It had already broken the international record by Friday, pulling in about $487 million so far. The Fate of the Furious only managed a paltry $443 million. Finally, Avengers: Infinity War is playing on more North American theater screens than any film in history, with 4,662 separate screens showing Avengers: Infinity War.

Those are impressive numbers, but consider this: The maximum potential domestic box office—all 327.2 million people in the United States and another 37.06 million Canadians paying an average price of $9.11 to see the same movie on the same weekend—is just over $3 billion, even if no superfans see the movie twice. That means that for all the shattered records, the latest chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will only make it 11.5 percent of the way to complete cultural hegemony. We have got to do better next time!

Sorry folks, but Idris Elba is officially married - CNN

Written by Katie Polglase, CNN

Womp, womp. ...

Idris Elba broke millions of hearts Friday when he married model Sabrina Dhowre in a secret ceremony in Morocco.

The ceremony took place at Ksar Char-Bagh, a luxury hotel in Marrakech, the hotel's special events manager Gigi Saadani told CNN. The wedding was covered exclusively by Vogue magazine for its July edition, and photographs of the event were published online Saturday.

The celebration lasted for three days and included a "colours of the Souk"-themed dinner for friends and family, Vogue reported. Elba, 46, wore a bespoke suit by designer Ozwald Boateng, while Dhowre, 29, wore a dress by Vera Wang, the magazine said.

Boateng celebrated the couple on Instagram: "Congratulations to my brother Idris Elba and his beautiful wife Sabrina Dhowre so happy for you."

Dhowre, an American model, was named Miss Vancouver in 2014. She met Elba on the set of "The Mountain Between Us" in 2017. The following year, Elba surprised Dhowre by popping the question at a film screening in London.
The British actor, who has been married twice before, first shot to fame on the small screen, starring in "The Wire" and "Luther." The latter earned him a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award and four Emmy nominations.

He began his film career in 2005, starring in "American Gangster," "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom," "Beasts of No Nation" and "Molly's Game."

The heartthrob was named People's "Sexiest Man Alive" in 2018.

Avengers: Endgame -- 22 things I learned from Marvel's epic opus - CNET

There's a lot going on in Avengers: Endgame. A lot. It's packed with whos and wheres and whens wrapping up a decade of Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity, so there's no wonder we have a lot of opinions and more than a few questions.

But here are 22 things I definitely learned -- one for each of the movies in the MCU up to this point.

Warning: Spoilers ahoy!

Marvel Studios

Did we mention spoilers? OK, you've been advised, here we go...

  1. Captain Marvel is busy elsewhere. There's a lot of universe out there, and that's apparently more important than literally time traveling to save the universe. Look, she's just busy, OK?
  2. Ant-Man's first word in Endgame is "Hope?"
  3. As is traditional for the Russo brothers, the film has a number of cameos from the much-loved sitcom Community on which the directors cut their teeth. In Endgame, Ken Jeong plays a security guard, while Yvette Nicole Brown is a SHIELD employee.
  4. We can learn a lot about you based on when you chose to go to the bathroom during Endgame. I went while Thor had a heart-to-heart with his mom. My wife went when the punching started.
  5. Even Marvel doesn't expect you to remember The Dark World. That rambling speech Thor made about how his ex Jane encountered an Infinity Stone was pretty funny, but let's face it: you really needed the reminder.
  6. The MCU still has no love for Netflix. The Avengers invited all hands on deck and still didn't call Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage or Iron Fist (even the Punisher might have come in handy).
  7. There are no other scientists on earth. There's just Tony Stark and Hulk Banner, even though it isn't even their area of expertise and they're only geniuses when there's no space aliens around. There isn't even anyone to stand and look at the dials while they jump through time.
  8. Come on, you know you're going to pause the Blu-ray to read the names on the memorial.
  9. Cap shaving his beard signals a clean slate as he tries to move on with his life, while Hawkeye gets a mohawk and questionable tattoo to show he's all edgy now. Captain Marvel's haircut signifies that... er... she's fierce?
  10. Superheroes spend a lot of time fighting crime, but not in the MCU. We've seen them fight space aliens, international techno-terrorists, mythical frost elves and Nazis, but it's rare we've seen anyone in the MCU actually go out and bust some honest-to-goodness criminals. Although Ronin -- Hawkeye with hang-ups -- takes vigilantism a bit far.
  11. null
    Marvel
  12. Tony Stark is a mass murderer. Yes, Thanos and Obsidian Maw and their chums weren't very nice, but two wrong snaps don't make a right.
  13. Black Widow's father's name was Ivan. She learned that just before she died, sadly -- but could this factoid be a setup for her forthcoming movie to be a prequel?
  14. It seems Peggy Carter is always going to be given short shrift by the Russos. They had the chance to redress the balance after unforgivably killing her off in a text message in Civil War, but while it's true Endgame gifts Agent Carter a happy ending with lost love Steve, she doesn't do or say anything. Her TV sidekick Jarvis gets more actual lines.
  15. Rich people have privilege. Pepper Potts' survival means Tony Stark is insulated from the snap, so he retires to his country estate with his family to be complacent and selfish. Billionaires, eh? Fortunately, Tony recognizes that when you can do something, you have to do something. Great power equals great responsibility, right? Think on that, Jeff Bezos.
  16. Stick around for the credits -- despite the lack of a postcredits scene -- and you'll see "The Producers would like to thank Jim Starlin for his significant contribution to the film," which is only fair seeing as he created Thanos. You'll also see the comic book legend cameo in the film's postsnap support group, along with co-director Joe Russo.
  17. avengers-endgame-crew-promo
    Marvel
  18. The credits also list personal trainers to the main cast, including a "trainer to Mr. Hemsworth." Unless that was Korg with his local pizza delivery place on speed dial, someone didn't do their job very well.
  19. Everybody just wants to retire to a farmhouse and have a daughter -- that's the dream for Tony, Hawkeye and Thanos, anyway. Even Thor can't be bothered anymore so he lumps Valkyrie with the job.
  20. Scarlett Johansson really shouldn't go to Tokyo. Ronin's first words to her were "You shouldn't be here," which is what a few people said when she was cast in Ghost in the Shell.
  21. Back to the Future is bullshit. As Professor Hulk Banner says of time travel, "Either it's all a joke or none of it is."
  22. Hulk is both Hulk and Banner now. Deal with it. It's great that after two disappointing solo movies, Hulk saves the day with a snap, but his huge character change feels like cheating. The whole point of the character is his unpredictable duality -- he's a genial genius and a ticking time bomb. That led to one of the most interesting subplots of Infinity War, but then it was just written out offscreen. Which makes me angry. And you wouldn't like me when I'm angry...
  23. Tony Stark still loves an Audi, all these years after the product placement in the first Iron Man movie. Let's hope Happy Hogan doesn't take Morgan Stark to Burger King.
  24. Storage Locker Rat is the new Star Destroyer Gunner.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ To Near Rare Breakeven Point With $1.1B Global Opening - Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: With an estimated global opening weekend on course for $1.1 billion, Disney Avengers: Endgame will make what most successful superhero movies earn in a theatrical lifetime. At this level, film finance experts tell Deadline that the Anthony and Joe Russo-directed sequel will near cash breakeven tomorrow on Sunday, which is unheard of for a major studio tentpole during its opening weekend. Last year, the duo’s Avengers: Infinity War clicked into profitability after ten days.

While it’s still early, our sources believe that a final worldwide endgame well north of $2B, closer to $2.5B for Endgame isn’t out of the question. Only four films have cleared that mark: Avatar ($2.79B), Titanic ($2.19B), Star Wars: Force Awakens ($2.07B), and Infinity War ($2.05B). Endgame‘s domestic B.O. is poised to lie at greater than $750M.

At the upper end of Endgame‘s final B.O. range, a $600M-$650M profit is within the realm of possibility off the sequel’s estimated $356M net negative costs and a global $150M P&A spend. Infinity War off combined theatrical expenses of $475M plus ancillary costs saw a half billion profit and won Deadline’s Profit Tournament. Talent participations and residuals amounted to a combined $170M on Infinity War per our finance insiders, and we hear they will increase slightly on Endgame. Star Wars: The Force Awakens walked away with $780.1M in profit after total theatrical and ancillary revenues of $1.55B and total costs of $776.6M.

This weekend, Endgame‘s domestic start is estimated between $350M-$356M and its overseas B.O. close to $800M. Of that latter figure, $300M-plus is from China (which delivers a 25% to 27% rental between $75M-$81M).

'Avengers: Endgame' has already broken the global box office record - CNN

'Avengers: Endgame' has biggest opening day ever
And the weekend isn't even close to being over yet.
The Disney (DIS) and Marvel film surpassed the record held by "Avengers: Infinity War," which made $641 million for its opening around the world last April.
"Endgame," which has the Avengers return to take on the evil Thanos, has grossed an estimated $487 million overseas, according to the studio. That breaks the record for the biggest opening weekend internationally, which was held by 2017's "The Fate of the Furious."
"Endgame" also already has the highest-grossing three day start ever in China. The film has so far made $217 million there.
The film rolled out internationally starting on Wednesday.
Back in the states, the records are also racking up.
"Endgame" had the biggest opening day ever in North America with an estimated $156.7 million Friday. That's roughly $37 million more than the previous record's total, which was held by 2015's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."
'Avengers: Endgame' triumphantly caps Marvel universe
Disney said Saturday that it now estimates a three-day domestic total for "Endgame" in the $310 million to $340 million range. The current domestic record belongs to "Infinity War," which made $258 million.
While these numbers are unprecedented for an opening box office, they make sense considering the immense excitement and buzz around "Endgame."
"Endgame" is the epic conclusion to Marvel studio's decade long series of blockbuster films. All together Marvel Studios has made more than $19 billion worldwide.
Movie chains are running around the clock and adding showtimes to meet the demand of moviegoers. AMC Theatres announced on Monday that seventeen locations will stay open for 72 straight hours from Thursday night through Sunday.
The film, which clocks in at roughly three hours, has garnered acclaim from critics and moviegoers. It holds a 96% score on review site, Rotten Tomatoes and an A+ CinemaScore.
