‘Avengers: Endgame’ – Everything You Need to Know About the Asgardians of the Galaxy - TheWrap

(We’ve got some spoilers here “Avengers: Endgame.” Not, like, the hugest spoilers, but this is about a scene near the end of the movie.)

We’re still largely in the dark about what’s next for the Marvel Cinematic Universe after “Avengers: Endgame.” Sure, we know about “Spider-Man: Far From Home” in July, but the schedule is empty after that event though Marvel Studios is camped on a whole bunch of dates over the next several years. But “Endgame” does contain a couple, mm, forward-looking nuggets near the end, the biggest one coming from Thor (Chris Hemsworth) when he’s deciding what to do next after all this madness.

As “Avengers: Endgame” is wrapping up, one moment of sorely-needed levity after so many gut-punches comes when Thor  leaves New Asgard on Earth and hitches a ride to parts unknown with the Guardians of the Galaxy. As they get ready to depart, Thor jokingly refers to the group as the “Asgardians of the Galaxy,” leading to a funny exchange with Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) about who really leads the team.

While the name “Asgardians of the Galaxy” in “Avengers: Endgame” mainly served as a fun pun — and probably also to set up Thor as a full on Guardian in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” — in the comics it’s actually an existing superhero team, and the reference could be hinting at a fun new expansion of the Guardians.

Created by Cullen Bunn and Matteo Lolli, the Asgardians of the Galaxy is a team of, yes, Asgardian (or Asgard-adjacent) characters that debuted last summer in the first issue of their own ongoing self-titled series.

Formed after the break-up of the Guardians of the Galaxy during Marvel’s “Infinity Countdown” storyline — way too complicated to sum up here, but one thing of note is that Star Lord became the guardian of the Power Stone, sort of — the Asgardians come together to fill the “team of powerful space-faring heroes willing to get their hands dirty saving the universe” job vacancy.

Good thing too, because the villain Nebula had just forced the dwarves of Nidavellir to make her a powerful Asgardian weapon, then killed all but one of them. And then she ripped the fingernails and toenails off their corpses to make a fleet of Naglfar ships.

Nagflar, by the way, is the ship from Norse myth that ferries souls from Hel to do battle with the gods during Ragnarok. You can see where this is going: Nebula is trying to bring the end times to Asgard.

Which is where the Asgardians of the Galaxy come in. They’re assembled by Thor’s long-lost sister Angela (herself a former member of the Guardians), who recruits:

Asgardians of the Galaxy Valkyrie

Brunnhilde, AKA Valkyrie, the powerful Asgardian warrior who previously served with The Defenders and The Secret Avengers among other groups, who currently shares this plane of existence with:

– Annabelle Riggs. It’s complicated, but basically the same situation Thor has had with his human hosts. In addition to being able to switch places with Valkyrie as needed, Annabelle is also a gifted scientist.

– Kevin Masterson, AKA Thunderstrike. The son of Thor’s former host, Eric Masterson, he uses an enchanted mace that grants him Thor-adjacent powers.

– Skurge the Executioner. The former Asgardian supervillain-turned-hero who recently escaped from the afterlife.

– Throg, the Frog of Thunder. Formerly a human named Simon Walterson, Throg was turned into an actual frog by a vengeful witch. He moved into a frog kingdom in Central Park, and through some wacky adventures came into possession of a tiny piece of Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, which he shaped into his own weapon, Frogjolnir — which grants him superpowers like Thor’s.

And, finally

– The Destroyer. A walking, talking suit of remote-controlled armor — that is secretly being operated by:

– Kid Loki. The reincarnation of Loki who isn’t a villain, but is still the God of Mischief and as untrustworthy as someone can be and still be considered basically good.

Asgardians of the Galaxy Issue 1 Bifrost Piece

Also, fun fact: they fly around in a space ship powered by a fragment of the bifrost.

They’ve had quite a few crazy adventures in their still-ongoing series, and are currently mixed up in Marvel’s “War of the Realms” crossover event.

Of course, we have no idea if name-dropping the team was anything more than a fun joke after some very, very intense “Endgame” moments. But if some version of the team does appear in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” — or (somebody get Taika Waititi on the phone) their own spinoff movie — it’ll be very different from the comics.

Not just because Thor isn’t a member of the Asgardians of the Galaxy in the comics. In the movies, Valkyrie, played by Tessa Thompson, doesn’t have a human alter ego, and is also currently the ruler of Asgard, poor Skurge (played by Karl Urban) sacrificed himself to save the remaining Asgardian civilians at the end of “Thor: Ragnarok,” Thor destroyed the Destroyer at the end of the first “Thor” movie, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is also dead and so far hasn’t been resurrected as a teenager, and there’s no version of Thunderstrike yet.

Asgardians of the Galaxy Throg

Also, Nebula (played by Karen Gillan) is a hero now, and a full-on member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. And most criminally, there’s no Throg.

But you know what? It’s never too late to bring a frog with Thor’s powers into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Seriously, Marvel, get on that.

Since we haven’t heard anything about a fourth “Thor” movie, and with Thor joining the Guardians and Valkyrie leading the surviving Asgardians, it seems like a distinct possibility that the third “Guardians of the Galaxy” could incorporate the Asgardians in general rather than just Thor. But with returning director James Gunn tied up with DC’s “Suicide Squad” for a while, the next “Guardians” movie is probably a long way off. Which leaves us entirely too much time to speculate about what it means that Thor dropped that “Asgardians of the Galaxy” reference at the end of “Avengers: Endgame.”

Disney's 'Avengers: Endgame' shatters box office records with $1.2 billion global debut - CNBC

"Avengers: Endgame" has done the impossible.

In just five days, the Marvel film hauled in more than $1.2 billion at the global box office.

This shatters the previous record for the highest weekend total of $641 million set by "Avengers: Infinity War" last year. This has never happened before and marks the fastest a film has ever reached the billion dollar mark.

"Infinity War" was the previous record holder with 11 days.

In the U.S., the Marvel superhero flick took in a record-breaking estimated $350 million during its opening weekend, shattering expectations. The previous domestic record was held by "Avengers: Infinity War," which opened last year to $257.6 million.

Disney bumped up its estimates for the film's full weekend Saturday after a record opening day debut, saying it expected the film to gross between $310 million and $340 million in the U.S.

Industry predictions ahead of "Endgame's" opening had originally pegged the film's debut between $260 million and $285 million. However, on Saturday, analysts revised their estimates to be even higher than Disney's, suggesting the film could haul in $360 million or more before Monday.

Internationally, "Endgame" has grossed an estimated $859 million, breaking the highest opening weekend haul of any film released internationally in the history of cinema. "The Fate of the Furious," the previous record holder, had earned $443 million during its opening weekend in 2017.

"Kevin Feige and the Marvel Studios team have continued to challenge notions of what is possible at the movie theatre both in terms of storytelling and at the box office," Alan Horn, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, said in a statement Sunday.

Only days ago, it seemed impossible that "Avengers: Endgame" could haul in even close to $300 million domestically during its opening weekend.

Theater owners have contracts with other studios to show their films during the weekend and "Endgame's" running time — three hours two minutes — makes it difficult to screen the film more than three times in a 12- hour period.

Additionally, no film has averaged more than $59,900 per theater before, a feat reached by "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" in 2015. The film played in 4,100 locations during its debut and hauled in a total of $247.9 million in its first weekend.

"Infinity War," which was the previous record holder for highest weekend box office gross in the U.S., showed in around 4,470 theaters when it was released last year and hauled in an average of $57,000 per theater, according to data from Comscore.

Opening in 4,662 theaters, it was expected that "Endgame" would follow a similar pattern, earning between $60,000 and $65,000 per theater. Instead, it earned an average of $75,075 per theater.

The film, the 22nd installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is the long-awaited culmination of more than a decade of storytelling. Ahead of its release this weekend, advanced ticket sales on Fandango had led to more than 8,000 sold out showings of the film and theater owners were eagerly adding more screenings, some at odd hours, to meet the demand.

In its opening day in North America, "Endgame" took in $156.7 million, including $60 million from Thursday night previews. This was a 32% increase compared to the previous record holder "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," which opened at $119 million in 2015.

Initially, it was believed that only a few dozen theaters had opted to do round-the-clock showings of the film. However, it has become clear that more theater owners decided to go against the norm and offer screenings at off hours.

"Theaters created a situation for the film to earn the maximum dollars, by literally expanding the supply to meet demand," Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst at Comscore, said Saturday.

Showings at AMC and Alamo Drafthouse theaters, including ones at 4 a.m. and 7 a.m., have sold out or been very close to selling out.

"At Marcus Theatres, we went all in on this title adding more show times based on demand prior to Thursday's opening," Greg Marcus, CEO of the Marcus Corporation, said. "Presales for the opening broke all records for presales we had for any other title."

Marcus said that depending on the size of the theater, each of his company's 90 locations had between 60% and 80% of screens dedicated to showing "Endgame."

"Though 'Endgame' is far from an end for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, these first 22 films constitute a sprawling achievement, and this weekend's monumental success is a testament to the world they've envisioned, the talent involved, and their collective passion, matched by the irrepressible enthusiasm of fans around the world," Horn said.

How will the Eternals fit in the MCU after 'Avengers: Endgame?' - Mashable

Thanos isn't an Eternal, but he might be related to them.
Thanos isn't an Eternal, but he might be related to them.
Image: Marvel studios

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has delivered three distinct storytelling phases. Phase 1 was an introduction to Earth's mightiest heroes up until their team-up in The Avengers. Phase 2 showed the aftermath of The Avengers through Age of Ultron and ending with the small-scale debut of Ant-Man. Phase 3 is the current phase, which chronicled the dissolution of the Avengers in Captain America: Civil War and will end with after Spider-Man: Far From Home takes place post-Endgame

As for what Phase 4 will be about? There are only a few hints. A Black Widow film is certainly in the lineup, but that will likely be a prequel to the events of the current MCU timeline. Casting announcements also revealed plans for a Shang-Chi movie.

Most saliently, Angelina Jolie and Kumail Nanjiani are attached to star in The Eternals, which looks to be the MCU's next attempt at introducing a new team of heroes to its massive audience. The Eternals are less known to non–comic reading audiences so there's plenty of room for interpretation, but for those who want a primer on who and what the next big batch of Marvel characters are, let's do a rundown.

There are various versions and reboots of the Eternals in their 40+ years of history at Marvel, but the general idea is that long, long ago, the godlike Celestials came to Earth and used their science-magic to create two divergent species based on the DNA of early humans. These species were Eternals and Deviants.

(If the Celestials sound familiar, one of them has already turned up in the MCU. Ego the Living Planet, A.K.A Star-Lord's dad, was a Celestial. That makes Peter Quill half-Celestial, even if his dad kicked the bucket in Guardians of the Galaxy 2).

Eternals are human-shaped and nearly immortal in that they do not get sick and are immune to toxins that would kill an average human. Their bodies are also extremely durable and they are nearly impossible to destroy. By default they possess the powers of flight, telekinesis, super strength, mind reading, force field generation, and more depending on the Eternal, and they can enter a hive-mind state with each other that collates their powers into an amplified being called the Uni-Mind.

The Eternals are usually depicted as warring with the Deviants to protect the human race. Some even settled in the mountains of Ancient Greece and founded an Eternals city called Olympia, thus becoming the real-life basis for the Greek pantheon.

Deviants got the substantially shittier end of the experiment stick and are physically malformed and have lesser powers compared to Eternals.  Thanos was a Deviant in the comics, and while his heritage has not been explained in the movies so far his presence may be used as a later example of their presence in the MCU.

Also, comic lore states that the experiments behind the Eternals and Deviants bled into the human population and led to the series of human mutations that give mutant characters like the X-Men their powers. In that way, the Eternals entering the MCU may serve as a backdoor way for Marvel Studios to introduce the X-Men and other mutant superheroes, now that its parent company Disney owns the rights to the mutant characters previously owned by 20th Century Fox.

The only two named Eternals who are for sure turning up in the Phase 4 movie are Sersi and Ikaris. Megastar Angelina Jolie is signed on to star as Sersi, an Eternal who is considered unique among her kind because she prefers to spend her immortal life among humans. She is a particularly powerful Eternal and was even an Avenger at one point in the comics— partly because she had a crush on Captain America. Relatable.

Ikaris has not yet been cast, but he's another unique Eternal. He is skilled in the projection of energy from his eyes and hands and also has a strong interest in humans — even if his name is a nod to his history among mortals on earth, since the comics place him as the father of the mythological human Icarus, who flew too close to the sun on mechanical wings.

Again, there's a lot of history about the Eternals and Deviants in Marvel Comics and there's no saying which bits of their backstory the MCU will use for its interpretation, but knowing that they're immortal superhumans with powers beyond anyone else in the MCU should insinuate that the power levels in Phase 4 are about to skyrocket. Whoever remains after Endgame will have to content with an entirely new class of hero...and a potentially worse category of villains.

How 'Avengers: Endgame' changes these 5 upcoming Marvel movies and TV shows - INSIDER

"Guardians of the Galaxy 3" has had a dramatic journey, and it's not even close to being in theaters.

James Gunn, who directed the first two installments, was fired by Disney in July after offensive tweets from years ago resurfaced, resulting in "Guardians 3," which was originally scheduled to be released next year, being postponed.

Then Warner Bros. hired Gunn to write and direct a "Suicide Squad" sequel in October. Last month, Disney rehired Gunn for "Guardians 3," but he'll finish "The Suicide Squad" first, meaning it will be a few years before we see the Guardians return ("The Suicide Squad" comes to theaters in 2021).

After "Endgame," we know a little bit more about what "Guardians 3" could be about, and it's quite unexpected. Thor relinquishes leadership of the Earth-based "New Asgard" to Valkyrie (the original Asgard was destroyed in "Thor: Ragnarok"), and joins up with the Guardians at the end of the movie, implying Thor actor Chris Hemsworth is not only sticking around the MCU, but could even star in "Guardians 3."

He's one of the original Avengers to come out of "Endgame" unscarred, while other veteran franchise actors like Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man) and Chris Evans (Captain America) are phased out.

During this scene, Star-Lord is looking at a screen with Gamora's face on it and the word "searching." Gamora died in "Avengers: Infinity War," but a Gamora from the past is brought into the present due to some time-travel wizardry. There's a good chance "Guardians 3" will be about this search for Gamora.

Royal Baby nerves? Never! Duke hits London Marathon despite Meghan birth being 'CLOSE' - Express

was spotted mingling with athletes, volunteers and event organisers today at the Virgin Money London Marathon. The Duke of Sussex will be giving out medals to the athletes who participated in the sporting event. Meanwhile, his wife Meghan Markle remains at home and is just moments away from giving birth.

Prince Harry's appearance has dismissed rumours that Meghan is due to give birth today.

Today is said to be Meghan's due date, as the heavily pregnant Duchess anticipates the arrival of her first child.

Harry will meet volunteers and present medals to the marathon and wheelchair winners, including those who triumphed in the World Para Athletics World Championship Marathon.

The Duke of Sussex took photos with USA's Dan Romanchuk and Switzerland's Manuela Schar as they celebrate their victory at the Men's and Women's Wheelchair event at the London Marathon.

With the birth of his baby due, Kensington Palace did not announce his attendance in case he was no longer able to go to the event.

A spokesperson for the Duke said: “He had always planned to go but with the birth of his child due it was not announced in advance in case he was no longer able to attend. He is pleased he is able to attend.”

Harry also met volunteer medics from St John ambulance and other community organisers who participated in one of London's biggest sporting events.

A Royal Household statement said: "The Duke of Sussex will be attending the London Marathon today.

"During his visit the Duke will meet volunteers, watch some of the runners and present medals to the London Marathon and Wheelchair winners, including the World Para Athletics World Championship Marathon."

Meghan and Harry announced they will be keeping details of their royal birth private.

The Duchess is unlikely to give birth at Lindo Wing, unlike her sister-in-law Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, who gave birth to all three of her children at St Mary's hospital.

Over 40,000 runners participated in the 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon.

Sir Mo Farah came in fifth with a time of 2:05:38 behind Kenyan winner Eliud Kipchoge who crossed the finish line at 2:02:36.

Avengers: Endgame's deaths, twists and ending -- we have serious questions - CNET

avengers-endgame-imax-poster-crop

We've got so many questions!

Marvel Studios

Calling Avengers: Endgame a dense movie is like saying Tony Stark has a fascination with metalworking. In other words, it's a massive understatement.

As the culmination of 22 films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Endgame has the unenviable task of wrapping up a decade's worth of story and character arcs and, of course, addressing that massive cliff-hanger at the end of Infinity War.

For the most part, it succeeds, offering fans -- especially hard-core fans who've obsessed over the MCU films -- a satisfying conclusion. That it can serve so many different functions and work as an entertaining blockbuster in its own right is a testament to the vision of Marvel Studios and the skill of Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo.

But it's not perfect. And after a bit of reflection, you might scratch your head at the implications of some of Endgame's twists.

If you haven't watched the film, STOP READING NOW. This is your spoiler warning.

spoilers-mcu

Seriously, back away now.

Here are the biggest questions we have after Endgame:

What's the deal with Hawkeye's new getup?

Let's start with an easy one before we really go down the rabbit hole.

Comics fans will recognize Clint Barton's switch from Hawkeye to Ronin, but the movie didn't fully explain the need for the new identity and costume. I get that losing your family is traumatic, but does it justify a hero costume makeover -- not to mention a full-sleeve tattoo? And where the heck did he get those new weapons and gear? He doesn't have the support of SHIELD anymore, so is he independently wealthy like Bruce Wayne?

It seems Hawkeye is a victim of the limited character development he's had in the past. Endgame makes it up to him, but there's a little too much at once.

At least he looks cool though.

Now playing: Watch this: Avengers: Endgame is a thrilling sequel to every MCU...

3:14

What about those five years?

Early in Endgame the story jumps ahead five years, showing the survivors living with the fallout of what's been called "The Decimation." When the Avengers save the day, everyone returns to the present, five years after the crisis. It's a bold decision that ensures the MCU remains scarred by Thanos' infamous snap.

But the five-year gap leads to a lot of questions. What about the people who died in those five years? And as fellow CNET editor Mike Sorrentino pointed out, what if someone moved on in life and remarried in that period? That would make for an awkward reunion.

On top of that, can humanity even rebuild from becoming a postapocalyptic society? It's hard to see everyone going back to the way things were, though that seemed to be the implication when we saw Peter Parker returning to school.

Speaking of which...

How will Phase 4 address the time jump?

The trailers for Spider-Man: Far From Home -- the final movie in the MCU's Phase 3 -- hint at Peter Parker and friends on a fun international romp through Europe. Should we assume they were all affected by The Snap but are now continuing their education five years later like nothing happened? Has international tourism just picked up where it left off? How will Far From Home address the time jump?

The ramifications are even more serious with Black Panther, whose sequel will likely be part of Phase 4. Wakanda lost its king, and his sister, for five years. What happened? Did someone else take over? And does T'Challa automatically regain the throne after his return?

One of the final scenes had T'Challa overlooking his kingdom alongside Queen Ramanda and Shuri. But that glosses over some serious constitutional questions about how things operated while he was gone.

Now playing: Watch this: The best moment from every Marvel Cinematic Universe...

4:23

What about the history of the MCU?

Any time you employ time travel in a story, you're going to open cracks in logic. The Russo brothers admirably tried to button up the leaks by having Captain America return the stones to their various places in the timeline -- but that doesn't fix everything.

For instance...

Are there two Captain Americas now?

We have the original Steve Rogers frozen in ice until he woke up in the 21st century MCU, as we saw in the movies. But now there's a second, older Steve Rogers hanging out in Peggy Carter's home in the intervening years. One theory is that Captain America was always going to go back in time and secretly reunite and marry Peggy.

There was a reference to Peggy getting married and having kids, but in a scene between Rogers and Carter in Captain America: Winter Soldier, there aren't any photos of her husband.

Still, it's a stretch to imagine Captain America staying hidden all that time -- especially knowing that Hydra had infiltrated Shield years earlier.

Where the heck is Loki?

During the Back to the Future-style trip back to the events of the original Avengers movie, Scott Lang and Tony Stark's attempt to nab the Space Stone backfires, allowing the freshly apprehended Loki to nab the gem and disappear.

Ultimately, did Loki's escape change his fate at the hands of Thanos in Infinity War? It's plausible, given reports that Disney Plus is working on an original show based on the character.

But if that's true, then wouldn't it have affected the events of Thor: The Dark World, also revisited in Endgame? But during Thor's own time-jaunt we briefly see Loki in a cell, so the timeline wasn't altered.

How are Nebula and Gamora alive?

When Present Good Nebula shoots Past Evil Nebula, shouldn't Present Good Nebula cease to exist, like the photograph in Back to the Future? Alternatively, if it did happen to Past Evil Nebula, then Present Good Nebula should remember it, and in turn that memory would've been downloaded so Past Evil Nebula would see the hit coming.

And don't get us started on how there's now an alternate version of Gamora.

Did Infinity War even happen?

Thanos and his crew jumped ahead from 2013 (during the original Guardians of the Galaxy) to the present, and are defeated. So past-Thanos couldn't have manipulated the events that led to Infinity War. If he never gathered the stones, Tony couldn't have undone the snap, which didn't even happen anyway.

And now my head hurts...

How did 2014 Thanos send his ship to the present?

There's a scene where Nebula hands over a vial of the Pym particles to Thanos, but the Avengers all seemed to need those snazzy white suits to travel through the Quantum Realm. Why is Thanos' ship different?

Also, if Nebula handed her one and only vial to Thanos, how did she get back? Or if she used that final vial, how did Thanos go forward in time?

Can the gauntlet revive Thanos?

Don't forget, the gauntlet is still around.

Did Captain America reconnect with the Red Skull?

Remember, Cap went back in time to return all of the Infinity Stones, right? If he returned the soul stone to Vormir, wouldn't he have run into the Red Skull? Granted, Red Skull was likely freed from his burden of watching over the stone, but it's not like he has a ship to take him off planet.

That would be a heck of an awkward reunion.

Would Tony Stark back his brain up?

He's done it in the comics. Or maybe I'm still in denial about losing Robert Downey Jr. Let's hope the Avengers don't pluck a teenage Tony from earlier in the timeline either... that's happened too.

Is Black Widow really dead?

This is one death that seems permanent, as it completes Natasha Romanov's arc as a loner spy who found a family worth sacrificing herself for. As she said in Avengers, "I've got red in my ledger, I'd like to wipe it out." Consider it wiped.

But there's the persistent buzz that Black Widow will star in her own film. Sure, it could be a prequel, but this is a comic book universe, and deaths are all too easily reversed. In fact, of all the people left supposedly dead at the end of Endgame, three -- Black Widow, Loki and the Vision -- are all headlining future MCU movies and TV shows.

Where's Vision?

With WandaVision coming to the Disney Plus streaming service, there was a chance that Vision would return. But aside from a passing reference at the end by Wanda, Vision was nowhere to be found. The show could be a prequel to Infinity War, but in that movie Shuri was working on separating Vision from his Infinity Stone -- could he be resurrected without it?

Is Hulk's consciousness gone?

Bruce Banner and the Hulk have merged into "Professor Hulk." It seems Bruce is more in control, presumably submerging the Hulk personality we last saw in Thor: Ragnarok. How did that even happen? It's a pretty big deal to just explain away as happening offscreen.

Does Thor ever eat a salad?

Big Belly Thor is the best Thor.
