Cannes Film Festival Diary: Does Anyone Still Care? - Hollywood Reporter

As the fest prepares for the opening night of its 72nd edition, insiders predict a very muted affair, devoid of the glitz and hits of years gone by: "The business is changing, but I don't feel like the festival’s moving along with it."

The 72nd annual Cannes Film Festival had not yet officially begun and artistic director Thierry Frémaux was already exasperated.

In a contentious press conference on the eve of the festival Monday, Frémaux batted away questions about gender equality, his decision to award an honorary Palme d’Or to controversial French actor Alain Delon and how the festival might minimize its carbon footprint. "People ask Cannes to do things they don’t ask other festivals to do," Frémaux said. "The Cannes Film Festival is asked to be impeccable and perfect."

Even a water bottle placed next to the microphone annoyed him. "It's as though people had crossed a desert and would feel very thirsty," Frémaux said, disdainfully removing the bottle from his view.

Some of this is just a standard Gallic welcome — as Time magazine film critic Stephanie Zacharek tweeted, "The first day of Cannes is just a bunch of French people saying no." But some of Frémaux’s sour mood could be attributed to the challenges of running a festival steeped in history in a world and an industry that is changing faster than ever.

Certainly there are anticipated premieres of high-profile studio films at Cannes this year in Paramount’s Rocketman and Sony’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and returning festival favorite auteurs, such as Jim Jarmusch with the opening night political zombie movie Dead Don’t Die and Terrence Malick with his World War II drama A Hidden Life. And the market looks to have a healthy batch of titles to ignite buyers, like the Chris Pine thriller Violence of Action, the Mel Gibson Santa comedy Fatman, and a Ben Foster/Kristen Stewart project inspired by the letters of William Burroughs, to name just a few.

But with Hollywood’s most deep-pocketed players, Netflix and Disney, sitting the event out, and with brands and billionaires playing a lesser presence, this year’s Cannes looks to be a muted one.

"The business is changing, but I don’t feel like the festival’s moving along with it," says one industry source. "Streaming services are so much of the industry now. I’m not seeing the same presence with the brands. To me it feels very quiet."

Some of the bigger brand parties, like Dior’s, aren’t happening, luxury jeweler de Grisogono has downscaled its Hotel du Cap fashion show to a smaller luncheon in town, and Paul Allen, who died last fall, is clearly no longer available to host a bacchanal on his yacht. Alas, there does not yet seem to be any gathering on the calendar with the gonzo appeal of last year’s Gotti movie party at the Hotel du Cap, where John Travolta did a little soft-shoe on stage with 50 Cent, nor an extravagant market presentation comparable to when Jessica Chastain and her 355 film co-stars Penélope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Lupita Nyong’o and Fan Bingbing sailed into the Majestic Hotel’s port for a photo call before meeting with potential distributors.

"This year there wasn’t that crazy billionaire who comes into town and says, 'I want to get a bunch of attention'," says another insider. "Maybe people are getting more financially responsible?"

There’s still some glitter around — Vanity Fair will host its biennial dinner at the Hotel du Cap, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences will convene a member soiree at the Terrace UniFrance and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and Participant Media will honor the U.K.-based humanitarian organization Help Refugees on Nikki Beach. But the challenge will be drawing big names to the fetes. "I hate to say it, but you could always count on Harvey to bring the stars," says the industry source.

Yes, Cannes without Harvey Weinstein is different in all sorts of ways. After last year’s dramatic #MeToo- and Time’s Up-inspired red carpet protest of 82 women, and Frémaux’s signing of a gender parity pledge, there is evidence of the festival attempting to evolve on the woman front. For the first time on Monday, Cannes shared data about its submissions, 26 percent of which came from female directors, while 19 percent of the competition films are directed by women. And there is a modest addition to the Palais this year — Le Ballon Rouge, a space for nursing mothers, families, and diaper changing, created with backing from the French gender equity group 5050x2020.

"We have a very lengthy history," Frémaux said at the press conference. "One shouldn’t draw hasty conclusions."

Fair enough. Still, it’s clear the festival landscape is changing, and no one comes to Cannes for understatement. Certainly not the man varnishing the deck of his yacht in the marina on Sunday, while a worker in a cherry picker tied down the massive banner of Agnes Varda on the front of the Palais.

Nor the photographers, who had already staked out the spots for their ladders along the red carpet, securing them with bicycle locks. Nor the industry source who answered me, when asked about Cannes, "Well, Venice is gonna be on fire this year."

Emilia Clarke And The "GoT" Creators Responded To The Daenerys Controversy - BuzzFeed

If you've spent any time on the internet over the past couple of days, you might have noticed that people have a lot of ~opinions~ about the latest episode of Game of Thrones.

HBO

🚨 🚨 🚨 WARNING: If you haven't seen the episode yet, there are MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD. 🚨 🚨 🚨

The episode, which saw Daenerys deciding to torch all of Kings' Landing, has divided viewers. Some are furious, accusing the show runners of misogyny and poor character development, whereas others think the events were to be expected.

Well, Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys in the show, has now revealed how she feels about everything that went down.

HBO

Speaking in a behind-the-scenes video made by HBO, Emilia said: "Every single thing that's led her to this point...and there she is alone. We've all got this part of us that goes, 'I'm going to put that chocolate cake down, I'm going to walk away.' We can't be getting into these moral conundrums all the time. I'm not saying chocolate cake is a moral conundrum — eat as much fucking cake as you want — but those things that you wrestle with in yourself."

Then, after the episode aired, Emilia shared this Instagram post, showing her preparing to drink an entire bottle of champagne.

"This is what it took not only to shoot ep5...but to watch it too!" She wrote in the caption, alongside the hashtag: "#soshockingitblewmywigoff #😳 #🤢"

Meanwhile, the episode's director explained that the scenes were particularly challenging for Emilia since Daenerys embodies everything she's not.

He went on to give some insight into why Daenerys made the decision to torch King's Landing, explaining that she felt "empty" despite having achieving victory.

HBO

He said: "She feels empty. It wasn't what she thought it was. It's not enough."

And the show's co-creator, David Benioff, concluded by suggesting that viewers should have seen the plot twist coming.

HBO

The show's co-creator David Benioff explained: "Ultimately, she is who she is and that's a Targaryen. She has said repeatedly throughout the show, 'I will take what is mine with fire and blood,' and in this episode, she does it."

How Did a Photograph of Doria Ragland Change the Royal Family? - The Cheat Sheet

Royal fans everywhere can hardly contain their excitement over the new royal baby. According to his father, Prince Harry, Archie Harrison is “to die for,” and now that we have caught a glimpse of the newborn, we have to agree.

Just recently, Meghan Markle and Harry debuted their new son at St. George’s Hall, and now all the talk is about which parent he looks like more, whether he has the “Markle” nose, and if he has red hair like his dad. After showing off Archie, Meghan and Harry introduced him to his great-grandparents, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

During the visit, an iconic photograph was taken that is now making its way around the internet. The picture is of a smiling Meghan holding the baby, while Harry, Prince Philip, the queen, and most notably, Doria Ragland, look on with love and adoration. How did this photograph change the royal family forever?

A lovely picture

At first glance, just about no one would notice what is different about the picture as compared with other royal family photographs. After all, every family takes pictures of new babies and their grandparents, and the royal family is no exception. It is a wonderful picture and captures the connection between several generations.

The picture allows fans to see just how happy Archie’s birth has made all of his family members. However, there is one thing that makes this photograph even more special, more iconic, and more modern.

Pictures of the Cambridge children

Little Archie is by far not the first royal newborn to have a photograph taken. All of Kate Middleton and Prince William’s children were photographed as newborns, and fans went wild over those pictures just as they are over this one.

The main difference? Kate Middleton’s family has never been included in a first official royal photograph of her children like Doria Ragland was, especially one that the queen appears in.

While it’s true that the Middleton family has posed for christening pictures along with Queen Elizabeth, there have never been photographs of them being present when she is introduced to a new great-grandchild.

This shows just how far the royal family has come in regards to adapting to more modern practices.

The family has treated Meghan’s mom wonderfully

In the year that Meghan and Harry have been married, it is safe to say Doria Ragland has gotten quite the special treatment. At the royal wedding, she was seen emerging from St. George’s Chapel after the ceremony, her arm linked through Prince Charles’s.

Fans absolutely did not see this happen with Carole Middleton at the wedding of William and Kate. In addition, Doria was invited to spend Christmas at the queen’s Sandringham Estate with the royal family this past year. Although she, unfortunately, had to decline the invitation, it did not go unnoticed by fans that Kate’s family has never once been invited to Sandringham.

We can expect to see a lot of Doria with baby Archie

Meghan and her mother are one of the closest mother-daughter duos that we know of. In addition, Doria is said to be extremely delighted about the birth of her new grandson, so we can only imagine that she will want to spend as much time with Meghan, Harry, and Archie as possible.

Harry and Doria get along wonderfully, so he will be over the moon at the idea of having her around. Although Kate’s parents definitely spend time with the Cambridge children, we do not see many pictures.

Fans are predicting that this will be much different with Meghan and Harry’s baby, and look forward to many photographs of Doria doting on baby Archie.

Doris Day, America's box-office sweetheart of the '50s and '60s, is dead at 97 - CNN

She was 97.
The actress passed away early Monday surrounded by a few close friends at her Carmel Valley home, according to the Doris Day Animal Foundation.
She had celebrated her 97th birthday just last month with nearly 300 fans who gathered in Carmel to celebrate with her.
Day had recently contracted a serious case of pneumonia which resulted in her death, the foundation said.
Day was arguably the top female box-office star in Hollywood history, with a No. 1 ranking in 1960, 1962, 1963 and 1964. She had her first hit as a big-band vocalist during World War II before making nearly 40 movies in the next two decades, reigning supreme at a time when her contemporaries included Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor.
Day co-starred opposite Rock Hudson in three films.
Sex comedies such as "Pillow Talk," "Lover Come Back" and "That Touch of Mink" established her as a sunny but slightly uptight career woman who fought off men's advances.
"My public image is unshakably that of America's wholesome virgin, the girl next door, carefree and brimming with happiness. An image, I can assure you, more make-believe than any film part I ever played," Day told A.E. Hotchner in her memoir, "Doris Day: Her Own Story."
Or as one-time co-star Oscar Levant famously joked, "I knew Doris Day before she was a virgin."
The chaste screen persona seemed at odds with her private life.
She married four times and had a child before she was 20. She described her first husband as a "psychopathic sadist" who beat her. Her second husband told her by letter that he was leaving her after eight months. Husband No. 3 was agent Martin Melcher, who mismanaged her fortune and left her in debt when he died. Her fourth, restaurateur Barry Comden, complained to the press that she kicked him out of bed for her pets.
Day also suffered from panic attacks in the early '50s, what she later described as "tantamount to a nervous breakdown."

As singer, one of 'the best in the business'

She was born Doris Mary Ann von Kappelhoff on April 3, 1922, in Cincinnati.
She dreamed of a career as a dancer until she injured her right leg in a car accident as a teenager. During a long convalescence, she immersed herself in the big-band sounds of Tommy Dorsey and the vocals of Ella Fitzgerald.
She soon became a performer on local radio and then joined a swing band. The bandleader feared that her last name, Kappelhoff ("von" had been dropped), was too long for a marquee, so he dubbed her Doris Day after a song of hers, "Day After Day."
"But I never did like it. Still don't. I think it's a phony name," Day said more than 30 years later.
Her blonde good looks and smooth, velvety voice ensured that she quickly moved up the musical ranks. As a singer in Les Brown's band, she scored a hit with "Sentimental Journey," a defining ballad for servicemen returning from World War II.
Brown said later, "I'd say that next to Sinatra, Doris is the best in the business on selling a lyric."
Day would record more than 600 songs and nearly 30 albums, including such hits as "It's Magic," "Secret Love," "Que Sera, Sera" and "Everybody Loves a Lover" and concept albums such as 1956's "Day by Day" and 1957's "Day by Night." As recently as 2011, her album "My Heart" made the UK Top 10. She received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.

Rising star, falling into formula

Her singing popularity led to a movie debut in 1948 in "Romance on the High Seas" and a contract at Warner Bros. Her early peak came in the 1953 Western musical "Calamity Jane."
After her contract ended, she entered the most fruitful period of her career, including dramatic parts in "Love Me or Leave Me," opposite James Cagney, and in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Man Who Knew Too Much," starring James Stewart.

Day turned almost exclusively to comedies by the late '50s. "Pillow Talk" and "Lover Come Back" opposite Rock Hudson and "That Touch of Mink" with Cary Grant cemented her goody-two-shoes reputation, if sometimes unfairly: The films were about Day, usually cast as an independent working woman, resisting her leading man's charms because she'd been deceived more than to protect her virginity.
Though the increasingly formulaic films were successful, they'd prove to be Day's undoing and make her passé when the counterculture supplanted the "Mad Men" era.
In a review of her last film, 1968's "With Six You Get Eggroll," Vincent Canby summed up the critical attitude toward Day then, noting that there were "some hints of the very real comic talent that has, over the years, become hermetically sealed inside a lacquered personality, like a butterfly in a Mason jar."
She had a chance to change course when director Mike Nichols offered her the role of Mrs. Robinson in "The Graduate," but the star wasn't interested. "I could not see myself rolling around in the sheets with a young man half my age whom I'd seduced," she recalled later. "I realized it was an effective part ... but it offended my sense of values."
With his wife's film career in decline due to mediocre movies he initiated, husband Melcher began to explore options on TV despite her opposition. A perfectionist, Day feared the medium's quick production pace.
Melcher died unexpectedly in 1968, leaving Day with a CBS sitcom and in financial straits. Her husband's reliance on attorney Jerome Rosenthal for business advice proved disastrous: The lawyer went through Day's millions with bad investments in oil wells, cattle and hotels.
Actress Doris Day, with her husband and manager Marty Melcher, outside his talent agency in Hollywood, circa 1960.
"I don't know if Marty betrayed me or not. I tend to think he didn't betray me. I think he loved me," she told the Los Angeles Times two decades later about her husband's management.
"The Doris Day Show" proved to be a lifesaver. Despite an ever-changing format, it ran for five seasons, gave her financial stability and kept her working as she coped with the loss of her spouse of 17 years. Day sued Rosenthal for mismanagement and won a $20 million-plus verdict in 1974 after years of litigation (she later settled with insurers).

Activist for animals

By the mid-'70s, she withdrew from the limelight to focus on animal rights and set up the Doris Day Animal League and Doris Day Animal Foundation. In a 2012 interview with "Fresh Air" host Terry Gross, Day admitted that she had about 30 dogs at one point.
"All my life, I have never felt lonely with a dog I loved at my side, no matter how many times I've been alone," she said in her memoir.
As a staunch advocate for animals, she briefly came out of retirement to host a cable TV pet show called "Doris Day's Best Friends," which included an emotional reunion with three-time co-star Hudson shortly before his death in 1985.
Perhaps her closest friend, son Terry Melcher, a music producer, died in 2004 at 62. He was survived by his son, Ryan.
There was talk of comebacks: She reportedly was offered "Murder, She Wrote" and the Debbie Reynolds role in "Mother" in 1996. But she resisted Hollywood overtures. In 2015, she batted down reports she was to appear in a Clint Eastwood film.
During her career and retirement, Day always seemed to adhere to the philosophy of her biggest hit, "Que Sera, Sera," which she initially opposed as a "kiddie song" but which became her signature tune.
"Que sera, sera.
Whatever will be, will be;
The future's not ours to see.
Que sera, sera,
What will be, will be."
Reaction to her death poured in from Hollywood.
"Condolences to the family of Doris Day," actor William Shatner tweeted. "She was the World's Sweetheart and beloved by all. Que Será, Será!"

Lena Headey Reacts to Cersei and Jaime’s Big ‘Thrones’ Reunion, First Had ‘Mixed’ Feelings About It - IndieWire

[Editor’s note: The following post contains spoilers about the penultimate episode of “Game of Thrones,” entitled “The Bells.”]

“Game of Thrones” aired its penultimate episode, “The Bells,” and, with it, claimed the lives of some of its longest running characters, including Cersei and Jaime Lannister (Lena Headey and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, respectively). The brother and sister reunited just moments before their deaths in the cellar of the Red Keep, which collapsed as Daenerys burned King’s Landing to the ground. Headey told Entertainment Weekly she was initially “mixed” on Cersei’s fate. Jaime brought her sister down to the cellar only to discover the exit was blocked by rubble. As Cersei pleaded with Jaime to protect their unborn child, Jaime embraced her and the two met their end in each others’ arms.

“I wanted her to have some big piece or fight with somebody,” Headey said of Cersei’s death. “The more we talked about it the more it seemed like the perfect end for her. They came into the world together and now they leave together.”

Jaime’s decision to abandon his friend and new lover Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) in the previous episode, “The Last of the Starks,” and return to King’s Landing to be with Cersei divided “Thrones” fandom. While Jaime’s decision surprised Headey herself, she said the choice directly impacted how to play her final moments as Cersei. When the two characters lock eyes, Headey gives Cersei perhaps the most humanity she ever has in eight seasons.

“I think the important thing is that Jaime had a chance at freedom [with Brienne] and finally liberated himself from Cersei, which I think the audience will be thrilled about,” Headey said. “I think the biggest surprise is he came back for her. Cersei realizes just how she loves him and just how much he loves her. It’s the most authentic connection she’s ever had. Ultimately they belong together. It’s maybe the first time that Cersei has been at peace.”

Headey said in Cersei’s final moments with Jaime the character finally broke through her disillusion to realize what’s important (as Jaime tells her right before they die, “It’s all that matters,” in reference to their love and their unborn child).

“She starts off in this final season trapped in a web of her own making, as is usual with Cersei,” Headey said. “She’s desperately unhappy and everything that’s happened becomes more real than it ever has for her. She starts to lose control of the situation. She’s destroyed every good alliance, connection, love in her life — she was always destined to be alone. And until the very, very last minute, she is, as ever, in denial of what’s actually happening.”

“Game of Thrones” is set to air its series finale this Sunday at 9pm ET on HBO.

Britney Spears Now Part of 'Free Britney' Movement - TMZ

EXCLUSIVE

Britney Spears has joined the social media movement to free her from her conservatorship, and she told the judge as much Friday when she was in court.

Sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ, Britney has done an about-face, now telling the judge her father, Jamie Spears, committed her to a mental health facility a month ago against her will and also forced her to take drugs. We're also told Lynne Spears' lawyer echoed the allegation.

TMZ broke the story, Britney spent 30 days at an L.A. mental health facility after she began rapidly going downhill ... she stopped taking the drugs that kept her stable after they stopped working and doctors still have been unable to find the right combination.

As we reported, Jamie Spears does not have the power under the conservatorship to either commit Britney against her will or to ply her with drugs against her will. A mental health facility that accepted an adult patient against that patient's will when the conservator did not have such power would be committing a crime. And remember, Britney frequently left the place and was seen out and about.

Britney wants more freedom and asked the judge for certain adjustments ... but didn't get them. Sources tell us Britney would like to end the conservatorship, which has been operating for 11-plus years.

The judge took no action and has ordered an expert to evaluate Britney and until that happens there will be no change in the conservatorship ... but it has clearly created a family war.
