The 'Game of Thrones' character originally slated to survive - CNN

Dave Hill, a writer for the hit HBO series (HBO is owned by CNN's parent company), revealed to Entertainment Weekly which of the characters had been plotted to make it.
"For a long time we wanted Ser Jorah to be there at The Wall in the end," said Hill, but instead the writers decided to have the character perish while protecting Daenerys Targaryen from the Army of the Dead in the third episode.
"The three coming out of the tunnel would be Jon and Jorah and Tormund," Hill said. "But the amount of logic we'd have to bend to get Jorah up to The Wall and get him to leave Dany's side right before [the events in the finale] ... there's no way to do that blithely. And Jorah should have the noble death he craves defending the woman he loves."
The actor who portrayed Ser Jorah, Iain Glen, told the publication that there was "a sweetness" in the character dying when he did because he was not around to see Daenerys fire bombing of King's Landing which resulted in the death of tens of thousands of civilians.
"It's a blessing for him that he never found out what happened to her," Glen said. "And from a pragmatic story point of view, his death served a greater purpose. Where could we have taken Jorah from there? F**k if I know."

Aladdin casts box office spell - BBC News

Aladdin still has the magic according to cinema-goers who turned out in their droves for the first weekend of Disney's live-action remake.

Guy Ritchie's take on the 1992 movie brought in more than $86m (£68m) in its first three days in North America.

The film, released on the US's four-day Memorial Day weekend, is expected to earn $105m (£83m) when Monday's ticket sales are included.

This would go well beyond earlier estimates of about $80 million (£63m).

The new version features Will Smith in the role of the blue Genie - formerly voiced by the late Robin Williams - and the Egyptian-born Canadian actor Mena Massoud as the wily charmer who pretends to be a prince to catch the attention of Jasmine, portrayed by Naomi Scott.

This time last year, Disney was reeling from a disappointing opening for Solo: A Star Wars Story, but with the Genie's help the company says it has raced ahead of opening weekend sales in the UK for both the Elton John biopic, Rocketman, and The Secret Life of Pets 2.

Speaking on the red carpet at last week's world premiere in Los Angeles, Smith told Variety about some of the main challenges they had in making the new version a success.

"Being able to find a way to not make it jarring and disturbing by how different it would be," he said.

"To make people feel at home while they were getting something new and special."

    'Better than expected'

It seems that Aladdin has exceeded most critics' expectations after a raft of mixed reviews.

The Guardian gave it two out of five stars, claiming that Aladdin "can't put the genie back in the bottle", and that it "fails to capture the magic".

The Independent, however, went for four stars, describing it as "a rip-roaring, matinee-style spectacle that turns out far better than expected".

"What could have been a cynical exercise in repackaging an old hit turns out to be an invigorating ride with lively performances, flamboyant musical numbers and clever special effects," it adds.

The Telegraph bridged the gap by opting for three stars, saying: "If you thought that Guy Ritchie would bring no small amount of grit to the fairy-tale world of Disney, you'd be mistaken.

"His Aladdin, the latest in a series of remakes (we've just had Dumbo and Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King follows in the summer), is a big-hearted fantasy musical with a gorgeous colour palette and a strict moral code which tries very hard - but doesn't quite succeed - in improving on the studio's 1992 original."

Disney's 'Aladdin' tops Memorial Day weekend box office with $207M worldwide; other debuts miss expectations - Fox News

The Walt Disney Co.'s live-action remake of "Aladdin" crushed the competition at the box office this Memorial Day weekend, earning more than $207 million worldwide since its debut. Other new movies in theaters this holiday weekend -- the horror "Brightburn” and the critically acclaimed teen comedy "Booksmart" -- failed to make a major impact.

While the 2 new R-rated films didn’t even break $10 million, "Aladdin" grossed an estimated $86.1 million to take the top spot at the North American box office, according to studio estimates on Sunday. The family pic did better than the expected $90 million pre-release tracking. It's expected to surpass the $100 million mark by Monday.

WILL SMITH HAS SEEN NEW 'ALADDIN' AND HE'S EXCITED

The musical stars Will Smith, Canadian actor Mena Massoud and English actress Naomi Scott and is based on the 1992 animated film, which was the top earner that year. Guy Ritchie directed the remake.

Audiences, who were 54 percent women and 51 percent families, gave the film an A CinemaScore and the newly launched verified Rotten Tomatoes audience rating gave it a 93 percent.

Known brands and sequels held the top spots at the holiday box office including, "John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum," which, now in its second weekend, placed second with $24.4 million, followed by "Avengers: Endgame," which came in third with $16.8 million. "Pokémon Detective Pikachu" rounded out the top four generating $13.3 million.

The original films featured this holiday weekend didn’t fare as well. Sony's modestly budgeted horror movie "Brightburn," which stars Elizabeth Banks, opened in fifth with $7.5 million. The film puts an evil spin on the Superman myth and has received mediocre reviews from critics.

"Booksmart," which got excellent reviews and steady buzz from its SXSW film festival debut, surprisingly debuted in sixth with only $6.5 million.

Although in line with studio expectations going into the weekend, some analysts predicted that the film, which many compared to the popular movie “Superbad,” would be a summer breakout hit. The movie even garnered a lot of celebrity endorsements on social media including from Ryan Reynolds and Natalie Portman. Olivia Wilde directed the film about two teenage overachievers and rule-followers who decide to go to a party on their last night of high school.

In an apparent attempt to attract moviegoers, Wilde tweeted Saturday, "Anyone out there saving @Booksmart for another day, consider making that day TODAY. 'Aladdin' soars at the box office, 'Booksmart' flops for Memorial Day weekend - Fox News

Moviegoers voted with their dollars and chose the familiar over the new this Memorial Day weekend. The Walt Disney Co.'s live-action remake of "Aladdin" crushed the competition at the box office, which included two new original R-rated films that opened as counterprogramming to the family pic: The critically acclaimed teen comedy "Booksmart" and the horror "Brightburn."

But the strategy didn't quite work. "Aladdin" did better than expected, grossing an estimated $86.1 million to take the top spot at the North American box office, according to studio estimates on Sunday. It'll likely pass $100 million by Monday. The others didn't even break $10 million.

"Aladdin," a musical-adventure directed by Guy Ritchie, stars Will Smith, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott and draws heavily on the music and story of the 1992 animated film (the top earner of that year) that it's based on.

WILL SMITH HAS SEEN NEW 'ALADDIN' AND HE'S EXCITED

"We're delighted," said Cathleen Taff, Disney's president of theatrical distribution. "Between the fun action-adventure and spectacular music combined with the cast, which is so charming and has such great chemistry together, we've hit something that fans are embracing and walking out of wanting to share with others."

Audiences, who were 54 percent women and 51 percent families, gave the remake an A CinemaScore, which is much more promising for its continued success than the tepid critical reviews. The studio also got another metric with the newly launched verified Rotten Tomatoes audience rating. Over 7,000 people rated the film to give it a 93 percent.

DISNEY DROPS NEW TRAILER FOR LIVE-ACTION 'ALADDIN' MOVIE

"I'm so pleased that Rotten Tomatoes launched this, it means people bought the ticket. You can trust that people giving you the score actually sat through the movie," Taff said. "We couldn't ask for a better barometer of fan reception."

With an international gross of $121 million, "Aladdin" has already earned over $207 million globally. It cost a reported $183 million to produce.

The top few spots at the holiday box office were populated by known brands and sequels. "John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum," now in its second weekend, placed second with $24.4 million. "Avengers: Endgame" took third with $16.8 million, and "Pokémon Detective Pikachu" landed in fourth with $13.3 million.

WILL SMITH CAN'T WAIT FOR PEOPLE TO SEE HIM AS THE GENIE IN LIVE-ACTION 'ALADDIN'

Original films are struggling to attract significant audiences at the moment. Sony's modestly budgeted horror movie "Brightburn" opened in fifth with $7.5 million. The James Gunn-produced film starring Elizabeth Banks puts a sinister spin on the Superman myth and has received mediocre reviews from critics.

A surprise for many, however, was "Booksmart," an Annapurna film distributed by United Artists Releasing, which debuted in sixth with only $6.5 million, despite excellent reviews and steady buzz from its SXSW film festival debut. Although in line with studio expectations going into the weekend, some had thought that this would be a summer breakout hit.

WILL SMITH SAYS GENIE ROLE IN LIVE-ACTION ALADDIN IS A 'HOMAGE' TO ROBIN WILLIAMS

'BOOKSMART' ACTRESS LISA KUDROW SAYS SHE HAD POOR BODY IMAGE ON 'FRIENDS'

Olivia Wilde directed the film that stars Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein as two teenage overachievers and rule-followers who decide to go to a party on their last night of high school. Many compared it to "Superbad," which opened in August 2007 to $33 million.

But despite all the hype, including a lot of celebrity endorsements on social media from the likes of Natalie Portman and Ryan Reynolds, audiences just didn't turn out for "Booksmart" in noteworthy numbers.

Wilde saw the writing on the wall Saturday and tried to change the course with a Twitter plea.

'BOOKSMART' STAR BEANIE FELDSTEIN OPENS UP ABOUT DEATH OF BROTHER

"Anyone out there saving @Booksmart for another day, consider making that day TODAY," Wilde wrote. "We are getting creamed by the big dogs out there and need your support. Don't give studios an excuse not to green-light movies made by and about women."

Those who did make to "Booksmart" were mostly women (61 percent) and under the age of 35 (74 percent). And the target 17-34 age group gave a more favorable exit score (an A) than audiences overall, who gave it a B+.

"People are in a popcorn mood," Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian said. "Films trying to be more introspective and fresh are having a tougher time getting their head above water."

OLIVIA WILDE'S MOM, LESLIE COCKBURN, LOSES VIRGINIA CONGRESSIONAL ELECTION

'JOHN WICK' DEFEATS 'AVENGERS: ENDGAME' AT BOX OFFICE

Still, he noted, to have three R-rated films in the top 6 ("Brightburn," ''Booksmart" and "John Wick: Chapter 3") is impressive. And one limited release that did manage to connect was the Laurel Canyon music documentary "Echo in the Canyon," which earned an impressive $103,716 from two locations in Los Angeles. It expands to New York next week.

The deficit is still running around 9 percent for the year, but next weekend could chip away at that with a diverse set of new offerings including the Elton John biopic "Rocketman," ''Godzilla: King of the Monsters" and the Octavia Spencer thriller "Ma."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Where available, the latest international numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

Box Office: ‘Aladdin’ Taking Flight With $105 Million in North America - Variety

Disney’s live-action “Aladdin” is flying high with an estimated $105 million in North America during the four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend.

It’s the sixth-highest Memorial Day weekend total ever, topping the 2011 mark of $103.4 million for “The Hangover Part II.” The top total came in 2007, when “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” took in $139 million in its first four days. “Aladdin” is also dominating moviegoing internationally with $121 million in 56 markets.

“Aladdin” has outperformed Disney’s pre-opening domestic projections, which were in the $75 million to $85 million range, taking in $86.1 million in its first three days. The reboot of the original 1992 animated movie — which generated $502 million in worldwide box office — stars Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Will Smith as the Genie, Naomi Scott as Jasmine and Marwan Kenzari as Jafar. Guy Ritchie directed “Aladdin,” produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich.

Comscore’s PostTrak general audience survey found that 67% of patrons said they would “definitely recommend” the film to their friends. Notably, 39% said their affection for the original was their primary reason for seeing the film, a high percentage that reflects moviegoers’ love for the “Aladdin” brand and the characters in the film.

“A very strong 22% said they would see the film again in theatres — much higher than the norm of 14%,” noted Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore’s senior media analyst.

Comscore estimated that total domestic business for the four-day weekend was $226 million. That was about $1.8 million shy of the total for the same frame last year, when “Solo: A Star Wars Story” launched with $103 million. The top Memorial Day weekend took place in 2013 when “Fast and Furious 6” launched and North American moviegoing totaled $314 million for the four days.

“A very solid Memorial Day weekend was led by the bigger-than-expected performance of Disney’s ‘Aladdin’ conjured up huge numbers of moviegoers looking for the perfect family-friendly treat over the extended holiday weekend,” he said.

Disney distribution chief Cathleen Taff told Variety that she’s particularly pleased that “Aladdin” has racked up a 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” Cinemascore. The site recently revised its scoring in that measurement to limit responses to verified ticket buyers.

“‘Aladdin’ is performing exactly the way we were hoping,” Taff added. “We should see strong performance in the coming weeks as we get into the summer season.”

Sony’s launch of horror-thriller “Brightburn” should pull in about $9 million for the holiday weekend to finish fifth and United Artists-Annapurna’s teen comedy “Booksmart” will open in sixth at around $8 million. Both were positioned as counter-programmers to “Aladdin” and finished slightly below forecasts.

Lionsgate’s second session of “John Wick: Chapter 3” should be runner-up with $30.5 million following its surprisingly strong opening of $56.8 million. The actioner will wind up the holiday weekend with $107 million domestically.

Disney’s fifth frame of “Avengers: Endgame” will finish third in the $22 million range, increasing its haul to about $803 million domestically by the end of Memorial Day. “Endgame” trails only “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in domestic gross, with the space saga having grossed $936 million.

Warner Bros.’ third weekend of “Pokemon Detective Pikachu” will follow in fourth with about $17 million. The family adventure will finish the weekend at the $120 million mark in North America.

Overall moviegoing for 2019 has hit $4.34 billion as of Sunday, down 10% from the same point last year. The lag is due to a dismal performance during the first two months of this year.

“Aladdin” is the third biggest launch of 2019, following the record-setting $357 million for “Avengers: Endgame” and $153 million for “Captain Marvel.”
