Leon Redbone, the perpetually anachronistic, famously mysterious artist who rose to prominence as a performer on Toronto's folk circuit in the early '70s, died Thursday while in hospice care in Bucks County, Pa.
Redbone's family confirmed his death through a publicist. No cause was given, and Redbone's age was a subject of speculation for decades.
"I've heard he's anywhere from 25 to 60," Bob Dylan told Rolling Stone in 1974, "and I can't tell, but you gotta see him." That same year, when asked about his age by Rolling Stone, Redbone replied: "Of course I don't know. It's just something I vaguely recall. I can't say for sure." In the news release announcing his death, Redbone's age was cited as 127.
The only things known — ostensibly — of Redbone's origins were revealed by Toronto Star columnist George Gamester in the 1980s: that he was a Cypriot named Dickran Gobalian, who emigrated to Ontario in the 1960s and changed his name after arriving in Canada.
Redbone's obscurantist tendencies, including his ever-present, masking uniform of sunglasses, bushy mustache and Panama hat, gave Redbone the aura of a quixotic time-traveler, someone who simply stepped onto the stage fully formed.
And Redbone was a man happily — or at least, authentically — out-of-time. He played dusty classics — from Tin Pan Alley and ragtime to blues and country — with a loose fidelity, always anchored by his casually lovely and always wry voice.
Dylan's endorsement, made at the apex of Dylan and Rolling Stone's cultural footprints, was a defining endorsement for Redbone and widened interest in him from stars of the era, including Bonnie Raitt and John Prine.
His commercial success, according to the Billboard charts, peaked in 1977 when the album Double Time reached the top 50 — helped, in part, by two performances during Saturday Night Live's debut season. But Redbone remained a cultural presence for decades, singing the theme song for '80s sitcom Mr. Belvedere and appearing as "Leon the Snowman" in the now-classic Christmas film Elf in 2003.
In 2015, Redbone announced his retirement from touring, with a rep citing health concerns. He followed that retirement up with another album, Long Way Home, composed of his earliest recordings and released by Jack White's label, Third Man Records.
When asked by NPR's Lynn Neary in 1984 whether he enjoyed his performances, Redbone responded with a wink: "I never have a good time ... but I try."
Serena Williams has already jetted to London to meet Meghan Markle’s new baby Archie, it is understood.
The tennis champion, 37, is thought to have visited Windsor last week before heading to the French Open tournament, according to the Daily Mail.
Mom-of-one Serena was joined by husband Alexis Ohanian, 36, and their one-year-old daughter Olympia as they "visited Frogmore Cottage".
Fans were sent into overdrive after the seven-time champion posted a photo on her Instagram account of her posing in what appeared to be a regal stateroom in Windsor.
However, celebrity hairdresser Lorraine Dublin confused matters further by posting a near-identical photo of Serena, but tagged her in Paris.
One fan wrote: “Looks like you are somewhere in London maybe? Meeting baby Archie with Jessica?”
And another added: “Is this at Cousin Meg house?”
But some pointed out the room looks identical to Hôtel de la Vaupaliere in Paris.
One wrote: “I really don’t understand why you appear to be misleading people into believing these pictures were taken in a British Royal palace? Why not mention Hôtel de La Vaupalière?”
Buckingham Palace has been contacted for comment.
Serena is an old friend of Meghan’s, and the former actress even wrote of their first meeting on her now-defunct lifestyle blog The Tig.
Meghan, 37, described they were “taking pictures, laughing through the flag football game we were both playing and chatting not about tennis or acting but about good old fashioned girly stuff."
The Duchess also described how the pair "hit it off immediately" and from then on have continued to support each other through their chosen charity work and business ventures.
Ahead of Meghan Markle's appearance at Wimbledon in 2017, Serena said: "We have always supported each other, just been there for each other through a lot."
Serena even helped to plan Meghan’s swanky $377,000 baby shower in New York, and organized their stay at the luxury penthouse suite of the Mark Hotel.
Serena and her Reddit founder husband Alexis Ohanian were among the chosen guests at Meghan’s wedding to Prince Harry in May 2018, and the athlete spoke of the special day during her interview.
She said: “To have such a monumental moment in England, nonetheless of all the places, I felt like we were literally watching history.
"I feel like in a few years we are going to look back at that moment and it's going to be so historic.
It's going to be something that people never forget."
But above all, Serena added: "I just wanted to see my friend be happy. And I think that's what happened."
Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was born on May 6 and it is rumored that Meghan’s best friend Jessica Mulroney flew over with her family to visit the new royal.
Meghan Markle is ‘too good’ for the Royal Family and has ‘never put a foot wrong,’ claims PR guru.
We previously told how the Duchess "asked Lizzy Cundy to help find a famous British man" and "ghosted" her when Harry came along.
This article originally appeared in The Sun.
The British royal family is known for being sticklers for tradition. From the order the family walks in when in public to the types of clothes they wear, everything in the life of a royal is ruled by tradition.
Recently, however, the world has seen a break from a lot of tradition, such as when Meghan Markle was allowed to attend family events before she actually married Prince Harry. In fact, Meghan and her husband often make headlines for doing things her own way.
In contrast, Kate Middleton follows tradition much closer and has made headlines significantly less often. Kate has broken from tradition by spending Christmas at home instead of at Sandringham, flying with her family, and making more casual dress choices than most royal ladies. Now, she’s made headlines for something many fans deem a huge royal faux pas.
While attending the Chelsea Flower Show, Kate bent down to kiss her grandmother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth, on each cheek. This is the same affection mirrored by Prince William just moments earlier. The queen did not seem to mind the affectionate greeting, but many believe this is strictly against royal protocol.
Generally speaking, members of the royal family are very formal in their greetings with one another while in public. They do not typically hug or kiss — at least while in the public eye. In fact, the greetings normally captured by the press include a slight head bow or shallow curtsy, depending on a person’s gender. Why then, did Kate and William kiss the queen, and did they really break any rules by doing so?
According to experts on royal protocol, there are no definitive rules on how members of the royal family greet each other. In fact, there aren’t any rules set in stone on how the public should address the royal family, either. This comes as quite a shock, considering that most believe there were strict rules to follow during greetings or at least those done in public.
Just because it has always been done a certain way; however, does not mean it must always be done that way. Experts even stated that people could technically call royals by their first name. Whether or not they would respond is a different matter entirely, of course.
Some wonder whether the way Kate and William greeted Queen Elizabeth might usher in a new era of informality for the royal family — or, at the very least, an era of slightly less formality. Much of the speculation comes from the way that Queen Elizabeth reacted to the greetings, which is to say that she did not react at all.
The lack of reaction and acceptance of the greeting, however, may not be so much about changing formality within the royal family, but rather a statement as to how the queen really feels about her granddaughter-in-law. Some speculation is that the family simply forgot there were cameras around. They support this evidence in the way that Kate and William curtsied and bowed respectively after the affectionate greeting. It was almost as though formality is an afterthought.
Perhaps what the world has gotten a glimpse of is the way that Kate and her husband interact with Queen Elizabeth behind closed doors. It appeared to be a very natural greeting, rather than a forced “statement,” as might have been seen were this to be the dawning of a new era. Whichever way it goes, one thing is for sure: Kate most certainly did not make a royal faux pas and she is definitely not in trouble with Her Royal Highness.
Prince Harry has always been viewed as the wild one in the royal family. That perception changed, however, after Harry married Meghan Markle, who reportedly changed him for the good. With Harry and Markle making a name for themselves within the ranks of the royal family, one inside source claims that some individuals within the monarchy are starting to view them as a threat.
Before Harry became a father, the Duke of Sussex got mixed up in a number of controversies. Back in 2012, for example, Harry played a game of strip pool in Las Vegas. Some media outlets got their hands on photos from the event, which did not go over well with other members of the royal family.
As if that wasn’t enough, Harry also embarrassed the monarchy when he rocked a Nazi outfit for a costume party. But with Prince William set to take the throne after Prince Charles, everyone excused Harry’s behavior and simply labeled him as a wild child.
Given Harry’s antics over the years, royal watchers did not expect him to settle down and start a family, let alone find someone as successful and strong-willed as Markle. Over the past year, Prince Harry has seemingly changed for the better, and inside sources claim that it is all because of Markle’s influence.
According to International Business Times, some members of the royal family are starting to see Harry and Markle as a real threat because they are beginning to outshine William and his wife, Kate Middleton.
Members of the royal family are not the only ones who have noticed Harry and Markle’s rise in popularity. Fans have also expressed their thoughts on how much Harry has changed since he met Markle, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. In fact, some fans recently took to Twitter to defend Harry’s maturity and praised him for being an amazing father and example.
“They needed Prince Harry to be ‘the wild one.’ The ‘damaged’ one. The minute he found a real relationship and set about being a dedicated husband, father, and charity leader, was the moment both he and Meghan became a threat to those rooted in his past,” one fan noted.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have enjoyed a lot of popularity ever since they started dating. Their wedding and subsequent pregnancy only boosted their popularity in the media, and an argument can be made that they are starting to outshine William and Middleton.
There is nothing wrong with Harry and Markle stealing some attention from the heir to the throne, but it is an issue if William and Middleton’s public image begins to suffer. After all, the royal family could use all of the positive attention they can get in order to remain relevant in the modern era.
Apart from meeting Markle, there is a good reason behind Harry’s lifestyle change. In a recent interview, Harry opened up about how he was forced to make a difficult decision in 2015 after Queen Elizabeth asked him to take on more duties as a working member of the royal family. At the time, Harry was still in the military and was finding it hard balancing his life as an officer with the family business. Harry eventually reached a crossroads where he had to choose between his military career and his place in the royal family.
In the end, Harry opted to quit his military career and pursue his life inside the ranks of the monarchy. Shortly after he left his job, Prince Harry met Markle and could not be happier with how everything worked out. But if he hadn’t decided against continuing his career in the military, there is a chance Harry’s life would have turned out completely different.
Harry is not the only one who was forced to undergo changes. Once her romance with Prince Harry started to get serious, Markle was reportedly asked to drop some of her friends, especially ones that had ties in the media world.
That includes British TV host Lizzie Cundy, who claims that Markle completely ghosted her a few months after she started dating Harry. Cundy also says that she tried to hook Markle up with some British men prior to Harry, including Ashley Cole.
Markle has not responded to Cundy’s comments.
Star Wars fans who had long dreamed about piloting the Millennium Falcon will now get that chance when the gates to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland finally open on Friday.
The centerpiece of the new theme park land is Han Solo's iconic ship, docked in the middle of the Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu. Here, not only will guests be able to take their picture with a massive replica of the iconic ship, measuring more than 100 feet long, they'll try their hand at flying it.

Groups of six will board the Falcon in Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, a new ride — a pilot, co-pilot, two gunners and two engineers. They must work together — flipping switches and pushing buttons — and how well they do so will determine if they return to port unscathed or with a few dents in the hull.
"When you can give people an immersive experience which is what Disneyland was designed to be in the first place but something that is as rich as this that heightens the whole experience for people in ways that I don't think we're ever imagined when we didn't have the resources of the technology," CEO Bob Iger told CNBC's Julia Boorstin Wednesday. "And so I think more than anything people are going to just be awestruck by how rich the experience here is."
A trailer released by Disney late Wednesday gives a glimpse of the ride and teases long-time fans of the sci-fi epic with shots of guests taking the iconic ship to lightspeed.
"I think Disney has done a fantastic job expanding their parks business, in general," Brett Harriss, discovery analyst at Gabelli Funds said on CNBC's "Squawk Box" Thursday.
"They're doing a great job using the immersive experience to drive engagement," he added.
Here's how fans who got a sneak peak of the new park ahead of its opening reacted to visiting Batuu:
The second ride in the park, Star Wars Rise of the Resistance, won't open until later this year.
Any issues that U.S. businesses run into in China as a result of an ongoing trade dispute between the two nations will be short-lived, according to the Walt Disney Co.’s top executive.

"There is still a lot that we don’t know. We don’t know where it is all going to end up. Where it stands now doesn’t feel good," CEO Bob Iger told FOX Business.
"I'm not losing sleep over it. But sure it's something that as I look ahead and think about the things that I should be worried about or at least focused on that would be one of them," he added.
A breakdown in trade talks between the Trump administration and President Xi Jinping’s government has U.S. businesses preparing for prolonged tensions with China, including the possibility that the Asian nation could seek to retaliate against American businesses operating in the country.
Disney has yet to see a material impact as a result of the trade dispute, but potential issues could arise in the future, including China dialing back the number of U.S. films they allow in the country, according to Iger.

“If things get even more acrimonious it's possible that we will pay the price, so to speak,” he said. “If something happens and there [are] some tensions that create some business issues, my guess is that they'll be more short-lived.”

China remains an important market for Disney.
The company is partnering with Guangzhou-based NetEase to create a slate of new entertainment offerings, including games and TV shows, based upon the Marvel universe.
It is also investing heavily in Shanghai Disney, including a new theme land based on the animated film “Zootopia.”
"When you go there if you’re from China, you immediately respect what is there because it doesn’t feel like just Disneyland…it feels like their Disneyland," Iger said.
Attendance at the theme park has suffered in recent quarters, however. Higher ticket sales in the second quarter of 2019 helped compensate for lower traffic, leading to flat results year-over-year. Iger told investors previously the company is not publicly discussing the potential for another location.

And the country is still a critical source of film revenue.
While box office earnings dropped 9 percent in 2018, Disney saw success with “Avengers: Endgame,” one of the highest-grossing films of all time in China and the most successful foreign movie.
