Why 'Jeopardy!' champ James Holzhauer made a low wager on his losing night - Fox News

When James Holzhauer made a relatively low wager in the Final Jeopardy round on Monday night's episode of "Jeopardy!," it left a lot of viewers scratching their heads — but "Jeopardy!" experts say that the professional gambler's bet was the best he could have made given the circumstances.

Holzhauer bet just $1,399 in Final Jeopardy, leading even Alex Trebek to remark at the unusually low number, but Brad Rutter, the all-time leader in "Jeopardy!" winnings, told the Washington Post that it was actually the absolute best way for Holzhauer to win during Monday's game.

Holzhauer had $23,400 leading into Final Jeopardy, with Emma Boettcher in first place with $26,600 and third place contestant Jay Sexton with $11,000. Rutter explained that Holzhauer's only chance at victory would be if Boettcher guessed the Final Jeopardy question incorrectly and Holzhauer guessed correctly.

If Boettcher, who wagered $20,201, guessed incorrectly, she would have $6,399 remaining. Holzhauer, if he guessed correctly in that scenario, would have won with $24,799. In the off chance that Sexton answered correctly while Boettcher and Holzhauer each guessed incorrectly, he could have won. As a result, Holzhauer made a bet that would have had him leave with $1 more than Sexton's maximum potential winnings of $22,000, Rutter noted.

If Holzhauer had bet everything and Boettcher guessed the Final Jeopardy question correctly, Boettcher would have still won.

'JEOPARDY!' LOSES TOP RATINGS SPOT TO 'JUDGE JUDY' WITHOUT JAMES HOLZHAUER

Holzhauer explained to Action Network that Rutter's analysis was correct.

“I knew I could only win if Emma missed Final Jeopardy, as there was no way she wouldn’t bet to cover my all-in bet, so my only concern was getting overtaken by third place, and I bet just enough to make sure of locking him out," he said. "Betting big would have looked good for the cameras, but now I turn my straight bet (Emma misses) into a parlay (Emma misses, and I get it right).”

Holzhauer wasn't too broken up about the loss. He told The Atlantic that he was resigned to his fate before it was sealed. “By the time Final Jeopardy rolled around, I knew my goose was cooked if Emma answered correctly. It’s a little like needing a team to miss a last-second field goal — nothing you can really do but watch," he said. "I made peace with my fate before the clue for Final was even revealed.”

Holzhauer, who won 32 consecutive games before his defeat, finished his reign with $2,464,216, which includes the $2,000 he earned in his final game. That total comes short of the record set by "Jeopardy!" legend Ken Jennings, who earned $2,520,700 within 74 victories in 2004.

CFDA Fashion Awards 2019: Jennifer Lopez and Barbie among winners - CNN

Written by Kristen Bateman, CNNNew York City

Two very different fashion icons were honored at one of the fashion industry's most prestigious award ceremonies in New York Monday night: Jennifer Lopez and Barbie.

The pair were among a host of figures recognized by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) at its annual awards, often known the "Oscars of the fashion world."

Wearing a vibrant coral-red Ralph Lauren skirt and a turtleneck embellished with more than 43,000 crystals, Lopez was handed the CFDA's Fashion Icon Award for her "long-standing and global impact on fashion," according to the CFDA. Previous winners have included Naomi Campbell, Beyoncé, Johnny Depp and Rihanna.

"I loved fashion since I was little girl, growing up in the Bronx and to here and among all these designers and to be honored is just a dream," the singer and actress said on the red carpet, adding: "I'm wearing Ralph Lauren, a fellow Bronx native."

In a somewhat unusual turn, the Mattel doll Barbie received the CFDA's Board of Directors' Tribute Award for her influence on fashion -- as well as her esteemed designer collaborations -- over the last 60 years. Model and actor Yara Shahidi presented the award, with Barbie's official Instagram account posting a picture of the doll in a custom look by Diane von Furstenberg.

Von Furstenberg, chair of the CFDA, also made a splash at the awards by carrying a fake torch down the red carpet. The designer told guests that her dramatic entrance signified the passing of her duties to Tom Ford, who now takes over as organization's chair.

Elsewhere, designer Eileen Fisher was honored with the Positive Change Award, in honor of her commitment to sustainability. Fisher's eponymous brand has pledged to use only organic cotton and linen by 2020.

"I'm very excited to speak to the group and to try to inspire them to think about positive change," she told CNN, before taking her seat at the ceremony. "It's so needed."

Designer Brandon Maxwell took home one of the most coveted prizes of the night, being named womenswear designer of the year. The Texas native, who made headlines with Lady Gaga's show-stopping Met Gala outfits last month, has become a fixture on the New York fashion scene since launching his neatly tailored and feminine line in 2015.

"I'm here with my fiancé and my friends, and I'm just excited to even be invited into the room," the designer explained, adding: "I think in fashion, we're always looking forward and I'm just working on what's next for September right now."

A brief history of the red carpet

A total of 11 awards were presented at the ceremony Monday night. Other winners included Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who won a fifth CFDA Fashion Award in recent years for their brand, The Row. Emily Adams Bode was named emerging designer of the year, while Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen was honored with the Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti International Award.

And plenty of other fashion figures turned up to wow the red carpet. Gigi Hadid arrived in a gray Louis Vuitton suit with a pleated skirt alongside the brand's artistic director and award nominee Virgil Abloh. Ciara was among the last to arrive, wearing a black silk off-the-shoulder gown, with metallic embroidery, by Vera Wang.

Halima Aden, who made history this spring when she became the first model to wear a burkini in Sports Illustrated, arrived wearing a custom Tommy Hilfiger.

"For me, it felt like life was coming full circle," she told CNN. "What launched my career was wearing the burkini, so then to shoot for (Sports Illustrated) and shatter so many perceptions and to be alongside women, who wear very little or nothing at all, felt just so incredible."

Jeopardy!: James Holzhauer's winning streak ends short of money record - BBC News

A professional gambler's 32-game winning streak on US quiz show Jeopardy! has come to an end after he was beaten by a university librarian.

James Holzhauer had won $2.46m (£1.9m) before losing to Emma Boettcher.

He is only the second contestant in the show's history to earn more than $1m in one run.

Jeopardy! contestants must answer clues in the form of a question. It is one of the longest-running quiz shows on US televisions.

Mr Holzhauer's winnings were just short of Ken Jenning's record $2.52m earned in 74 consecutive games.

The 34-year-old gained celebrity status for his playing tactics.

His style differed from previous contestants as he opted to target the "expensive" difficult clues first instead of solving easy clues.

He also made large bets on "Daily Double" questions where players can risk as much as their entire score in one answer.

He said he prepared for the game by reading children's books.

After being beaten he told the New York Times: "Nobody likes to lose. But I'm very proud of how I did, and I really exceeded my own expectations for the show. So I don't feel bad about it."

An average of 10.3 million viewers tuned in during the first 12 days of Mr Holzhauer's run, audience data indicated.

Ms Boettcher, a librarian from Chicago did her masters thesis on predicting the difficulty of trivia questions using text features. She used Jeopardy! as her basis for the study.

Beyonce's lioness Nala tells Simba to 'come home' in new 'Lion King' teaser, Twitter roars - USA TODAY

Silence, jungle! Beyonce is speaking at last.

The Queen Bey revealed her lioness Nala's voice in "The Lion King" with a brief teaser trailer released Monday. Beyonce had no comment on the footage, letting Nala do the talking for the live-action film (in theaters July 19).

In the teaser, Nala calls out to her childhood friend Simba (Donald Glover) to return to Pride Rock, now ruled by villainous Scar (Chiwetel Ejiofor).

."Simba, you have to take your place as king," Nala says. "We need you. Come home."

Seriously, who is going to say "no" to Beyonce? Simba's coming home.

The teaser gets a little heated at the local watering hole as grown lion Simba eyes the grown Nala. The teaser also shows Billy Eichner’s meerkat Timon and Seth Rogen’s warthog Pumbaa in a bit of comic relief.

The Bachelorette's Hannah Brown Does Not Deserve This, Lukes - E! NEWS

There have been many moments throughout this season of The Bachelorette so far when we have been in awe.

Not only is Hannah a particularly good Bachelorette, but she mostly has a really good-seeming group of guys. Many of them are likable, they're treating her well, and they're being kind to each other, mostly. They also immediately identified the problems in the group, and for the most part, Hannah seems to be on the exact same page they are.

It was immediately clear this season that she was attracted to Luke Parker, and it was also pretty immediately clear that Luke Parker is one of those guys who doesn't fare well on a show where the whole point is that one woman dates multiple men. He declared he was falling in love on like the first (group!) date, and clearly has some issues, which even Hannah could see.

Tonight, he was given the opportunity to play rugby, and rugby is a rough sport in every single way, so Luke P. got really rough. He may or may not have tackled Luke S. for no reason, but no one was quite sure what exactly happened.

Whatever happened, it took up like 80% of the episode, and one thing became very clear: Hannah really likes Luke P. Because if she didn't, he would have already been gone, and also because she literally said her feelings for Luke P. were the strongest during tonight's episode.

It makes it so so hard to watch a season when the frontrunner is, at the very least, being painted as a villain, and at the very most, is very much a villain, with all the other guys turned against him, and all their time spent sharing their feelings on Luke P., while all Hannah can do is be confused and annoyed about the whole situation with Luke P., because she's got feelings for a guy who apparently sucks.

This is just to say that we are tired, and this whole thing is really impeding our enjoyment of the delightful Hannah Brown, because all she can do is ask for the truth and be annoyed. We fear Luke P. is going to last a little too long for our taste, and we're going to continue to have way too many guys in our ranking gallery whose ranking is sort of random based on the fact that they got no screentime in which they weren't talking about Luke P.

You can see that ranking below, though obviously things will be changing next week when we actually get to a rose ceremony.

Now let's all just dream of lobsters and Tyler C. while we discuss which guys are currently at the front of the pack (in our opinion, because you bet Luke P. is last).

The Bachelorette airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on ABC.

John Oliver explains medical devices' FDA loopholes on Last Week Tonight (VIDEO). - Slate Magazine

Though it’s not often a late-night segment requires a safe word, John Oliver warned viewers that Last Week Tonight’s latest on medical devices is grisly enough to warrant one. Still, if you could stomach the show’s guts-deep investigation into autopsies two weeks ago, you’ll probably be fine, and Oliver’s cries of “Opossum” will give you plenty of warning when things are about to get icky.

Grosser than the detailed descriptions of malfunctioning hip replacements and vaginal mesh are the FDA loopholes that allow faulty medical implants to go to market. Watch as Oliver explains the difference between “FDA-cleared” and “FDA-approved” and demonstrates how participants in clinical studies are manipulated into giving positive answers on surveys.

Jane Krakowski makes an appearance, too, to deliver a warning: “Treat medical devices like guys who have played Batman. Some are great, but new ones aren’t necessarily better, and there are a few you definitely don’t want to let inside your body.”

Post-End Game, Russo Brothers to adapt Magic: The Gathering for Netflix - Ars Technica

"Being able to help bring these stories to life through animation is a true passion project for us,” Joe and Anthony Russo said in a joint statement.

Netflix/Wizards of the Coast

Avengers: End Game might have stopped short short of toppling Avatar as the highest-grossing film worldwide, but it has still raked in a staggering $2.71 billion globally. And now Deadline Hollywood reports that the next project for co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo will be an adaptation of the hugely popular and influential card game Magic: The Gathering into an animated series for Netflix.

Clearly Netflix is looking to tap into that lucrative Russo brothers box office mojo, and who can blame them? The brothers have produced "four Marvel Studios hits in five years with $6.61 billion in global box office," per Deadline Hollywood. Octopie Network will be co-producing with Bardel Entertainment overseeing the animation.

“Our goal is to not only tell a compelling story leveraging Magic: The Gathering’s incredible body of work, but to also push the medium and perception of storytelling through animation,” Octopie CEO Isaac Krauss told the site. “This series will cross the genres of suspenseful thriller, horror, and drama with deeply developed characters the likes of which are not often seen in animation.”

Invented by combinatorial mathematician Richard Garfield in 1993, Magic: The Gathering casts players as planeswalkers, spell-casting wizards that traverse the Magic multiverse doing battle by summoning various creatures, artifacts, and elemental powers via collectible trading cards. Ars' own Aurich Lawson—an avid Magic player since before the first official expansion pack, Arabian Nights (so he's got the cred, y'all)—calls it "poker for nerds who are worried plain poker might make them too cool and socially acceptable." There are now 20 million players worldwide, dedicated tournaments, and over 20 billion Magic cards in circulation, along with spinoff comics, games, novels, and online short stories.

We don't have much in the way of details as to what the animated series will be about; it's early days yet, and the future series doesn't even have a title. But the teaser art pictured above features "Chandra Nalaar, a fiery spellslinger from the plane of Kaladesh who has become one of Magic’s most recognizable heroes," per io9. Apparently the Russos will “oversee the creation of an all new storyline and expand on the stories of the Planeswalkers and will see the heroes and villains of the universe contend with stakes larger than any one world can hold.”

The Russo brothers, avid gamers themselves, said in a joint statement, “We have been huge fans and players of Magic: The Gathering for as long as it has been around, so being able to help bring these stories to life through animation is a true passion project for us.”
