CONFIRMED: Jussie Smollett Will NOT Return To 'Empire' - The Daily Wire

On Tuesday, Lee Daniels, the co-creator of “Empire,” confirmed that actor Jussie Smollett will not be on the show for its sixth and last season.

Daniels was responding to an article in Variety which intimated that Smollett would be back for the last half of the sixth season. Daniels tweeted, “This is not factual. Jussie will NOT be returning to Empire.”

In its updated report issued after Daniels’ tweet, Variety reported of the production sources who had indicated Smollett would return, “The same production sources also note tensions were ratcheted up on set between the show’s primarily black cast members, who still believe Smollett is innocent, and the mostly white below-the-line crew, many of whom believe Smollett is guilty.”

The on-again, off-again reports of Smollett’s possible return included Fox Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV issuing a statement in April saying, “By mutual agreement, the studio has negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett’s option for season six, but at this time there are no plans for the character of Jamal to return to Empire.”

Appearing on the Fox morning show “Good Day New York” in April after the city of Chicago filed a lawsuit against Smollett for damages associated with the investigation into his actions, Daniels was asked if the lawsuit created any difficulties in bringing Smollett back on the show. He answered, “It's causing a dilemma. We are in discussions about that right now.”

On April 19, members of the “Empire” cast wrote a letter to Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier, Disney TV Studios and ABC Entertainment chair Dana Walden, Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn, “Empire” co-creators Daniels and Danny Strong, and other executive producers on the series, arguing, “Together, as a united front, we stand with Jussie Smollett and ask that our co-star, brother and friend be brought back for our sixth season of Empire.”

In May, Fox reiterated that there were no plans to revivify Jamal Lyon, the character Smollett played. At roughly the same time, a spokesperson for Smollett told Fox, “We've been told that Jussie will not be on Empire in the beginning of the season but he appreciates they have extended his contract to keep Jamal’s future open. Most importantly he is grateful to Fox and Empire leadership, cast, crew and fans for their unwavering support.”

In mid-May, Fox Entertainment announced that the upcoming season of "Empire" would be its last. Deadline reported, "Just two weeks after the Charlie Collier-run Fox Entertainment renewed Lee Daniels and Danny Strong’s hip hop drama for a sixth season and showed controversy ladened Jussie Smollett towards the exit door, it was announced today on Fox’s Upfront call that the self described 'groundbreaking cultural phenomenon' of Empire will be canceled once Season 6 is done."

The most recent developments in the Smollett case came in late May, when a Chicago judge ruled in favor of media outlets who requested court documents and investigation records related to Smollett's alleged fake hate crime. As The Daily Wire reported:

Smollett's case files were sealed in the same hearing where the Cook County States Attorney announced that they would drop 17 felony counts against the "Empire" actor in return for approximately 16 hours of community service and a $10,000 check — the "down payment" Smollett left with the court when he was let out on bond.

‘Ad Astra’ Trailer: Brad Pitt and James Gray Blast Off in Ambitious Space Epic - IndieWire

The long wait for footage from James Gray’s “Ad Astra” is finally over now that Disney has debuted the first official trailer for the Brad Pitt-starring space epic. The film, Gray’s first directorial project since the Pitt-produced “The Lost City of Z,” has been long in the works, as the director has blown through release dates because of an extensive post-production process. With the debut of its first trailer, it appears the recently announced September release is moving forward as planned.

“Ad Astra” stars Brad Pitt as an Army Corps engineer who decides to go on an ambitious space mission to find out the truth behind the mysterious disappearance of his father, who set out on a journey to Neptune looking for signs of extra-terrestrial intelligence but never returned. The supporting cast includes Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, Donald Sutherland, and Jamie Kennedy.

20th Century Fox originally set “Ad Astra” for January 11 before pushing back the release date to May 24. Gray said last December at the Marrakech Film Festival he was unsure if he could meet the May release date given how extensive the visual effects work is on the movie. “You know usually when you see a science-fiction movie there are a number of shots that don’t look very good?” Gray said during a masterclass. “I do not want to be up against a release date and have stuff looking really bad.”

Disney moved the opening to September last month following its acquisition of Fox. The new date positions “Ad Astra” as one of the studio’s potential awards contenders. The fall season has been especially strong when it comes to space dramas in the Oscar race (see “The Martian,” “Interstellar,” and “Gravity”) and “Ad Astra” will most likely premiere at one or a couple major fall festivals to build buzz.

For Pitt, “Ad Astra” is one of two buzzy upcoming premieres along with Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Tarantino’s latest earned rave reviews at the Cannes Film Festival last month, with particular praise being given to Pitt’s performance as a zen stunt performer with a violent side.

Walt Disney Motion Picture Studios will release “Ad Astra” in theaters September 20. Watch the first official trailer in the video below.

'America's Got Talent': 21-year-old singer gets golden buzzer after performing epic original song - AOL

Joseph Allen is not just an amazing performer and a creative powerhouse, he's a real inspiration.

The 21-year-old singer-songwriter from Texas took to the America's Got Talent stage on Tuesday, where he proved to be one of the most powerful, charismatic and magnetic performers the show has seen in years.

"I've always had this thing of just saying something then accomplishing it," Allen said in a pre-taped package, explaining that, when he puts his mind to something, it becomes a singular focus and he makes it happen. "I taught myself how to mix music, how to produce, how to engineer, and now I'm here."

Before he even opened his mouth to sing, Allen's smile and charm was already earning cheers from the audience, and when judge Simon Cowell asked why he chose to enter the competition this year, Allen's inspiring response floored the crowd.

Wrote an original song for his appearance on the show

"I see myself as being someone who can make a major impact in the world, and I just want to see how much of a footprint I can leave on earth before I leave."

It was clear the judges had no idea what to expect, especially after Allen said he'd written an original song just for his appearance on the show, but the moment he began his performance it was evident that he was a powerhouse.

The song - which includes the likely prophetic lyrics "after today, the world's gonna know my name" - was a perfect showcase of his talents and was met with an overwhelming standing ovation.

After getting effusive praise from Cowell, Julianne Hough and Gabrielle Union, judge Howie Mandel explained that his performance was something truly memorable.

"From the moment you walked out, your smile was electric," Mandel marveled. "Life is a series of moments, and people at home are talking about this moment. People in this room are talking about this moment."

As Mandel spoke, he excitedly climbed onto the judges' table and declared, "You said you want to leave a footprint. Well I'm gonna give you the footprint you need," as he stomped hard on the Golden Buzzer, showering the young singer in shimmering confetti.

America's Got Talent returns next Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC, where more hopefuls will audition for a spot in the next round of the competition.

What's on TV Wednesday: 'The Handmaid's Tale' and 'Black Mirror' - The New York Times

THE HANDMAID’S TALE Stream on Hulu. After a twist-filled Season 2 finale left audiences discordant (or just asking why June didn’t get into that truck), “The Handmaid’s Tale” returns to Hulu for a third round. Continuing its interpretation of the novel by Margaret Atwood, the acclaimed series will bring back Elisabeth Moss as June, whose tale of resistance in a New England reshaped by environmental catastrophe and a patriarchal, totalitarian state has inspired intense fandom and real-world activism. Season 2 saw Serena Joy Waterford, the complicated and often staggeringly evil character played by Yvonne Strahovski, getting more attention — a trend that continues. “These super powerhouse female roles are layered and complex, and the story lines are amazing,” Strahovski recently told The New York Times, “and it’s so fun as an actor to come to work and play with that.”

BLACK MIRROR Stream on Netflix. Charlie Brooker’s anthology series raises one eyebrow at technology and its other at human nature. The three unconnected episodes that make up the show’s fifth season, all debuting Wednesday, each run over an hour. Some discussion is bound to be centered on the season’s most famous cast member, Miley Cyrus, who plays a pop star in trouble in an episode called “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too.” Another episode, “Striking Vipers,” imagines a fictional virtual reality video game that adds a new dimension to a friendship in more ways than one. And “Smithereens” centers on a rideshare-enabled kidnapping that also brings up questions about the power of social media companies and offbeat tech executives.

GODZILLA (2014) 5:30 p.m. on TNT. Godzilla’s stature may have been cut down slightly by last weekend’s release of “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” which was met with disappointing sales at the box office. But there’s no denying this monster’s staying power in the popular imagination. The new movie is a sequel to this 2014 effort, which gave the classic city kicker a new coat of paint through modern-day visual effects. It’s good for a night in; the kind of movie during which you can safely get up to answer the door for pizza. It is “at once bloated and efficient, executed with tremendous discipline and intelligence and conceived with not too much of either,” A.O. Scott wrote in his review for The Times. Gareth Edwards, who went on to direct “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” directed this reboot.

NBC NIGHTLY NEWS WITH LESTER HOLT 6:30 p.m. on NBC. Tonight’s episode of this NBC News program will be broadcast from Normandy, with a program dedicated to the 75th anniversary of D-Day. It includes interviews with two American D-Day veterans and a visit to the Airborne Museum in Ste.-Mère-Église.

2019 CMT MUSIC AWARDS 8 p.m. on CMT. The country harmonizers Little Big Town will host this year’s CMT Music Awards in Nashville. Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Sheryl Crow, Brandi Carlile, Tanya Tucker, Luke Bryan, Toby Keith and Zac Brown Band are among the show’s performers.
