Tarantino's Star Trek Will Be Pulp Fiction in Space with a Gangster Element - MovieWeb

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is hitting theaters next weekend. It serves as Quentin Tarantino's 9th film as a director, and it could be his last original work. When his promotional tour is over, he is turning his attentions to Star Trek with an original idea that he conceived and turned into JJ. Abrams. He still doesn't know if he will direct it, but if he does, it will be his final movie as a director. It will also be rated R. Contrary to belief, he is also referring to it as Pulp Fiction in space.

Quentin Tarantino is a little upset with Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty in the new movie franchise version of Star Trek. About being Pulp Fiction in space, or what some are calling The Wild Bunch in space, the filmmaker says this.

"I don't know if I'll do it or not. I've got to figure it out, but [Mark L. Smith] wrote a really cool script. I like it a lot. There's some things I need to work on but I really, really liked it. I get annoyed at Simon Pegg. He doesn't know anything about what's going on and he keeps making all these comments as if he knows about stuff. One of the comments he said, he's like "Well, look, it's not going to be Pulp Fiction in space." Yes, it is! [laughs hard]. If I do it, that's exactly what it'll be. It'll be Pulp Fiction in space. That Pulp Fiction-y aspect, when I read the script, I felt, I have never read a science fiction movie that has this sh*t in it, ever. There's no science fiction movie that has this in it. And they said, I know, that's why we want to make it. It's, at the very least, unique in that regard."

It isn't known if Simon Pegg will return to play Scotty in this iteration of the Sci-Fi drama, but the movie could harken back to one of the series greatest original episodes. In Season 2, Episode 7, titled "A Piece of the Action", Spock and Kirk get to become gangsters when they discover a remote world that looks like 1920's Chicago. Tarantino says this about bringing some of those elements back, which also ties into his history with Pulp Fiction.

"...There is a gangster element to what we're doing with the Star Trek thing that works out pretty good."

The movie is definitely being written as an R-Rated adult version of the franchise. But that might not mean what many immediately perceive it too mean. About making an R-Rated Star Trek movie, Tarantino says this.

"I just don't think it's that big of a deal but if I'm going to do it, then I'm going to do it my way. If you've seen my nine movies, you kind of know my way is an R-rated way and a way that is without certain restrictions. So that goes part and parcel. I think it would be more controversial if I said I'm going to do a PG movie and it's going to fit exactly in the universe. It's not me. What the f*ck am I doing? I mean I didn't even do that when I did that CSI episode.

The thing is, when I talked to JJ about it, it's not that radical. We're just not worrying about stuff like that. JJ said, "Quentin, I love this idea because I think with Star Trek we can go any way we want to." Look, I've got a situation. As long as Paramount likes the idea and the script they almost got nothing to lose right now when it comes to Star Trek. Deadpool showed that you can rethink these things, do them in a different way. So really, even before JJ knew what the idea was, his feeling was, if it wants to be an R rating, fine. If it wants to be the Wild Bunch in space, fine.

In terms of using any of the original cast in his Star Trek, it almost sounds like Tarantino may be leaning towards bringing William Shatner back as Captain Kirk.

"I'm a big fan of the show Star Trek. I really like it a lot, but my portal into that show is William Shatner. I love William Shatner on Star Trek. I love his performance as James T. Kirk. That is my connection. That is my umbilical cord. It's why I like Star Trek more than Star Wars, because William Shatner's not in Star Wars. I think it's one of the greatest performances in the history of episodic television, of a series lead, and rightly so, because very few series leads have ever gotten the opportunity to play all the different wild, crazy things. "The Enemy Within" alone..."

Even if William Shatner doesn't come back, it sounds like Tarantino is keen on using Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto's versions of Kirk and Spock. He goes onto say this.

"So that's why I actually really was so taken with JJ Abrams' first reboot and how fantastic I thought Chris Pine channeled William Shatner. He didn't go a serious actor-y way. He said, well no, I'm going to do my own thing. He's playing the William Shatner version of Kirk and he's doing a fantastic job at it. I mean perfect, frankly. And [Zachary] Quinto is perfect as Spock. Those two guys, they f*cking got it."

It's too early yet to say if Tarantino will bring back the original existing Star Trek cast members, or if he will utilize the current movie timeline to tell his story. We'll have to wait until Once Upon a Time has come and gone. These quotes first appeared at Deadine.

Paul McCartney Has Been Secretly Writing an ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ Musical - Variety

The pop superstar who once released a movie and album called “Give My Regards to Broad Street” really does have designs on Broadway, after all. It was revealed Wednesday that Paul McCartney has already written a song score for a stage musical adaptation of the 1946 Frank Capra film classic “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

The former Beatle, who wrapped up a tour with a rapturously received show Saturday at Dodger Stadium, has been at work for some time with writer Lee Hall — responsible for “Billy Elliot” on stage and the “Rocketman” screenplay — and British producer Bill Kenwright, according to published reports confirmed by Variety.

“Writing a musical is not something that had ever really appealed to me,” said McCartney in a statement obtained by the Associated Press. “But Bill and I met up with Lee Hall and had a chat and I found myself thinking this could be interesting and fun. … ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ is a universal story we can all relate to.”

The aim is to launch a production in late 2020 in the UK with a later move to Broadway.

How far along is he? Far, according to a report in the New York Post from a writer who says he’s already heard McCartney’s recordings of 10 songs.

“On a recent trip to London, I got to listen to McCartney’s stunning demo tracks,” writes Johnny Oleksinski. “The songwriter segues easily into the musical theater style, while still giving his diehard fans that soulful McCartney sound. Every time a Beatle sings, an angel gets his wings. … On the CD, the singer performs every role from George Bailey to Mr. Potter and even tries his hand at acting. The more than 10 finished songs sound like a bona fide lost Beatles album, with one spectacular number’s rousing ending bringing to mind the ‘Na Na Na Na Na’s of ‘Hey Jude.'”

Oleksinski reports that the producer obtained rights to the film from Paramount in 2016 and reached out to McCartney, who took an interest and “mailed him the opening song” last year. “Our hero was a musical theater writer!” Kenwright told the Post.

Paul McCartney is adapting 'It's a Wonderful Life' as a stage musical - USA TODAY

LONDON (AP) — Paul McCartney is writing his first stage musical, an adaptation of the classic movie "It's a Wonderful Life."

The ex-Beatle is collaborating with "Billy Elliot" playwright Lee Hall and West End producer Bill Kenwright.

McCartney said he'd never considered writing a musical, but after meeting Kenwright and Hall three years ago, "found myself thinking this could be interesting and fun."

Hall said McCartney's "wit, emotional honesty and melodic brilliance brings a whole new depth and breadth to the classic tale."

Frank Capra's 1946 film tells the story of George Bailey, a small-town banker wracked with regret who is shown the value of his life by a guardian angel.

Producers said Thursday they are aiming for a late 2020 launch for the show. Its dates and venue have not been released.

Beyonce sends 'love letter to Africa' with new Lion King album - CNN

To accompany the release of the 3D animated version of the movie, Grammy award-winning artist, Beyonce, has shared details of her upcoming 14 track album titled 'The Lion King: The Gift.'
Be prepared for the 'Lion King' cast photo
Beyonce, who is also in the Lion King cast, has four solo songs on the album alongside collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, and her daughter, Blu Ivy.
Many of Nigeria's top Afrobeats stars including Burna Boy, Mr. Eazi, and Yemi Alade appear on the album. Tiwa Savage and Wizkid also feature.
Ghana's Shatta Wale, Cameroon's Salatiel and South Africa's Busiswa and Moonchild Sanelly are also on the soundtrack.
In an interview with Good Morning America, Beyonce describes the soundtrack of the movie, 'Spirit' as a 'love letter to Africa'.
Spirit starts with Swahili phrase "Uishi kwa mda mrefu Mfalme" meaning "Long live the King" and already has more than a million views on YouTube since its release on Tuesday.
Beyonce says the album features many acts from Africa because she wants it to be about authentic music from the continent.
"I wanted to make sure we found the best talent from Africa and not just use some of the sound or my own interpretation of it," she said in the interview.
She is also wearing custom made African outfits and accessories from Dakar, Senegal in the music video.
The album release is an acknowledgment of the growing reputation and reach that African music, especially the Afrobeats genre has, says music analyst, Segun Akande.
"Building a major release around Afrobeats as a movement and Afropop as a sound is a major cosign for what they've achieved," he told CNN.
"When you consider how big the Lion King franchise is, the album has the potential to put Afropop in the global conversation and introduce a younger generation across the world to our music," he added.
'The Lion King' hits familiar notes in adapting Disney classic
Nigerian artist, Wizkid, is one of the more successful Afrobeats stars in recent times. His 2016 Afrobeat-infused feature on Drake's hit, One Dance, made him the first Nigerian artist to top Billboard's US Hot 100 chart.
Africans on social media are sharing positive reactions to the tracklist on the Lion King album.
This is not the first time African music is being placed at the center of a major Hollywood movie.
In 2018, The Black Panther soundtrack featured top South African artists like Babes Wodumo and Sjava, and the album was credited with putting a global spotlight on the South African music genre.

'Today' meteorologist Dylan Dreyer reveals pregnancy after miscarriage - Fox News

There’s sunshine on the horizon for NBC’s Dylan Dreyer.

The “Today” show meteorologist announced Wednesday she’s expecting her second child after revealing earlier this year that she had suffered a miscarriage.

FIRST BABY BORN IN THE US TO MOTHER WHO RECEIVED UTERUS FROM DECEASED DONOR

“I’m pregnant,” Dreyer said in the second hour of “Today,” revealing that baby No. 2 is due in January.

Dreyer, 37, who welcomed son Calvin with husband Brian Fichera in 2016, opened up about her miscarriage in April, shortly after fellow “Today” show co-host Jenna Bush Hager announced her third pregnancy, and co-anchor Hoda Kotb revealed she had adopted a second baby girl.

“I’m devastated, and I have to go to work on the ‘Today’ show and be happy and smiling and pretend like nothing’s wrong,” she recalled. “We push [emotions] down and get through the show, I go to the doctor and they do an ultrasound. The baby’s still in there. It’s fluke bleeding.”

Dreyer has maintained a positive outlook, hoping her story resonates with others.
