'Game of Thrones' cast talks divisive finale, water bottles - NBC News

SAN DIEGO — “Game of Thrones” may be over, but the cast can’t seem to get away from stray coffee cups.

Maisie Williams, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Liam Cunningham, Isaac Hempstead Wright and others took the stage at San Diego Comic-Con Friday evening for a goodbye panel and found some waiting at their places.

It was a cheeky reference to the misplaced coffee cup that viewers spotted in an episode of the final season that subsequently went viral.

May 7, 201902:06

Although the moderator didn’t make them answer for the coffee, actor John Bradley did have to defend himself against the other out-of-place item in the finale: The water bottle by his foot.

“I am right handed. I’ve thought about this very strongly,” Bradley said, making a case that he would have put the bottle on the other side if it was his. “I’m not trying to clear my name, but ... I think I’ve taken enough blame for this one.”

The cast was in good spirits after years of attending Comic-Con and not being able to reveal anything at the panels. Finally they were allowed to talk about things.

The big Hall H audience cheered to find out some of their favorite lines: Williams chose her own character’s battle cry, “Not today,” while Conleth Hill went for his co-star Peter Dinklage’s, “I drink and I know things.”

They also indulged in some fan theories, cleared up some burning questions and speculated about what happens after the finale.

Wright said that he can’t imagine Bran’s new government is a “barrel of laughs.”

“Westeros is probably a surveillance state,” he said.

But perhaps there is more fun happening on the new small council, according to Bradley.

“It basically turns into ‘The Office,’” he said.

Cunningham posited that a spinoff could be called “Better Call Davos.”

As for Arya and her quest to go “west of Westeros,” Williams said, “I’m sure she’s having a wonderful time, like Dora the Explorer minus the bob.”

And Jacob Anderson thinks Grey Worm is off starting a new society with “a Wakanda kind of vibe.”

There was some discussion of the divisiveness of the eighth and final season, although likely not as much as there would have been had showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss been in attendance as originally scheduled.

“Look at the amount of people here,” Hill said, gesturing to the 8,000-some people in Hall H. “We’re very grateful to your fandom over the years ... this is the reality as opposed to the media-led hate campaign.”

Coster-Waldau said every season of “Game of Thrones” has been divisive in its own way, from Ned Stark’s fate to the “Red Wedding.”

“Obviously when it comes to an end it’s going to (expletive) you off no matter what because it’s the end,“Coster-Waldau said. “Just don’t call people names.”

Benioff and Weiss dropped off the schedule at the last minute, as did actors Iain Glen and Nathalie Emmanuel and director Miquel Sapochnik. Their absence was not addressed during the panel.

But everyone at Hall H seemed to be enjoying the victory lap. Earlier this week, “Game of Thrones” scored 32 Emmy nominations. It was a single year Primetime Emmy nomination record.

July 17, 201901:58

In addition to a best drama series nod, which the show has won four times, there were a handful of acting nominations for Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke in leading performances, Dinklage, Coster-Waldau, Alfie Allen, Lena Headey, Williams, Sophie Turner and Gwendoline Christie in supporting performances, and Carice van Houten as a guest star.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Allen, Christie and van Houten all self-submitted for consideration, which involves paying a $225 entry fee,

“Game of Thrones” ended this past May after 8 seasons. Its finale brought in a series record 19.3 million viewers.

Jussie Smollett Fights Special Prosecutor Appointment In Criminal Case Over Alleged Attack - Deadline

A month after an Illinois judge ordered that a special prosecutor be appointed to investigate the handling of Jussie Smollett’s abandoned criminal case, the former Empire actor today says he wants that move rendered null and void.

“Jussie Smollett, by his attorneys, Geragos & Geragos, respectfully requests that this Court grant his Motion, vacate the June 21, 2019 Order, and deny the Petition to Appoint a Special Prosecutor,” declares a filing made this morning in Chicago by Smollett and his high-profile legal team.

Calling the multiple charges case against the actor that stemmed from his January 29 claims of a racial and homophobic attack on the streets of the Windy City “a travesty of justice and an unprecedented deprivation of Mr. Smollett’s constitutional rights,” Friday’s filing basically accuses Judge Michael Toomin of conducting trial by media in what has been a heavily spotlighted situation from the get go. To that end, Mark Geragos and Tina Glandian, who are facing their own federal defamation suit from implicated siblings Ola and Abel Osundairo, preemptively want this matter severely blunted if they can’t get it shut down.

“In the event the Court is not inclined to grant the Motion, Mr. Smollett, by his attorneys, Geragos & Geragos, respectfully requests that the Court modify the June 21, 2019 Order to clarify that the special prosecutor may investigate and prosecute potential misconduct only, and may not further prosecute Mr. Smollett for the charges that were previously brought and dismissed against him,” the 30-page motion and exhibit thick filing adds.

Friday’s filing by Smollett’s team lays the whole attack on the Osundairos brothers. The paperwork slams the sibling’s so-called “self-serving statements which resulted in their release from custody with no criminal charges being filed against them, not a single piece of evidence independently corroborates their claim that the attack was a hoax.” Perhaps, more compelling, the defense lawyers also cite a possible helper of sorts in an unidentified and previous unmentioned third man, who witnesses supposedly claim was on the early morning scene over six months ago.

Though Judge Toomin made the ruling last month after determining that State’s Attorney Kim Foxx could not legally appoint her top deputy to handle the Smollett case in her place after she recused herself back in late winter, the fact is no special prosecutor has actually been appointed yet.

On the other hand, as more and more material from the once sealed Smollett case is being made public, the Cook County inspector general’s office is conducting its own investigation over why Foxx’s office dropped all charges against Smollett at an unannounced court hearing in late March. A controversial move that came less than three weeks after the actor who played the openly gay Jamal Lyon on the Fox drama was charged with 16 felony counts related to making a false police report for allegedly staging a phony hate crime attack on himself earlier this year.

Smollett entered a not guilty plea to the disorderly conduct charges and has maintained his innocence throughout the matter, which cost him his Empire gig after initial strong support from co-creator Lee Daniels and others.

Of course, this looming issue of a potential special prosecutor isn’t the only legal matter on Smollett’s plate.

There is the case against his lawyers by the Osundairos, whom Chicago police have said admitted that they were paid by the actor to plan and coordinate the alleged fake assault on that cold Chicago early morning in January. There is also a case from the city itself. In the closing days of Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s regime, Chicago sued Smollett in civil court to recover more than $130,000 it allegedly spent in police overtime hours investigating the case.

Even with a new mayor and more twists and turns in the matter, that messy matter is still ongoing.

Rapper A$AP Rocky will remain in Swedish custody after fight - NBC News

Rapper A$AP Rocky is facing another six days in a Swedish prison while police finish their investigation into a fight in downtown Stockholm, prosecutors announced on Friday.

Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, was detained on "probable grounds for serious assault" on July 3. Stockholm's District Court granted prosecutor Daniel Suneson's request that Rocky will continue to be held in pre-trial detention until July 25, the prosecutor's office said in a statement.

The announcement followed calls from reality TV star Kim Kardashian West, British singer Rod Stewart and many other prominent figures that Sweden free the 30-year-old American rapper.

The ruling didn't come as a surprise, said Rocky's lawyer Slobodan Jovicic, but it was "disappointing."

"I think it's very unjust," he told reporters following the hearing. "He is very tainted (by) this."

The two-time Grammy nominee was arrested with three other people a day after headlining the Smash x Stadion hip-hop festival in the Swedish capital.

Rocky and members of his entourage were alleged to have been involved in a brawl on June 30 in which authorities said a person was beaten and cut with broken bottles. He has denied the assault accusation.

Before his arrest, videos posted to Rocky's Instagram account shows that he and members of his entourage were arguing with two men on the street, telling the men to stop following them.

One bodyguard was released without charge soon after Rocky and two of his associates were arrested. But a judge extended the detention of Rocky on Friday after ruling that he was a flight risk.

Jovicic maintained that Rocky and his associates were acting in self-defense after being provoked by the other men on the street.

"They begged and pleaded to be left alone," he said.

He said that designating Rocky as a flight risk was "unreasonable" because he is a well-known celebrity, and while he must travel for work, he is determined to prove his innocence.

Even if Rocky were guilty, his continued detention and financial losses are "disproportional" punishment to the crime he is being accused of, Jovicic added.

In a Twitter post on Thursday, Kardashian West thanked President Donald Trump and senior members of his administration for trying to get Rocky released.

NBC News has not confirmed Kardashian West's claims about the Trump administration's role in the case.

The rapper has had to cancel several shows in his European tour while he remains in custody. He is due back in court on July 25.
