Marvel Unveils Phase 4 Plans: ‘Thor 4,’ ‘Eternals,’ ‘Blade’ Reboot - Rolling Stone

The Marvel Cinematic Universe unveiled its long-awaited Phase 4 plans Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con, with the studio announcing a slate of returning superheroes, new franchises, Disney+ series and a reboot that will be released over the next two years.

Among the returning Avengers, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow will receive a standalone film set for release on May 1st, 2020, the first of the Phase 4 projects. That film co-stars Florence Pugh, David Harbour and Rachel Weisz and is directed by Cate Shortland.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – the sequel to Benedict Cumberbatch’s 2016 superhero origin film and a movie that was dubbed the first “horror” film in the MCU – arrives May 7th, 2021 with director Scott Derrickson back at the helm. Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch will co-star in the Doctor Strange sequel; Olsen’s character will also headline her own Disney+ series, WandaVision, alongside Paul Bettany’s Vision in Spring 2021.

The fourth Thor film, Thor: Love and Thunder, strikes November 5th, 2021 with director Taika Waititi, Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson and Natalie Portman all reprising their roles. According to reports from the Comic-Con panel, the plot will find Portman’s Jane Foster becoming the Mighty Thor, as the character did in the comics. “I’ve always had hammer envy,” Portman said at the panel (via Variety).

Disney+, the studio’s upcoming streaming service, also announced series dedicated to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (Fall 2020), Tom Hiddleston’s Loki (Spring 2021) and Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye (Fall 2021), as well as an animated series titled What If?, based on the speculative comic book, that will feature Jeffrey Wright as the Watcher.

Among the new properties, Marvel’s long-expected Eternals was also formally announced, with Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak and Angelina Jolie as Thena among the cast. The Rider‘s Chloe Zhao will direct the film, which is due out November 6th, 2020.

Marvel’s kung fu master Shang-Chi will make his big screen debut in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, starring Simu Lui as the title character, Tony Leung as the Mandarin and and Awkwafina in an unspecified role. That blockbuster drops February 12th, 2021.

Finally, Marvel announced plans to reboot Blade with Mahershala Ali filling the vampire-slaying role once played by Wesley Snipes. This is Ali’s second appearance in a Marvel property, having previously portrayed Cottonmouth in Netflix’s Luke Cage series. The Oscar-winning actor approached Marvel about reviving the beloved comic. No release date was set for the reboot.

Marvel’s Kevin Feige also discussed the studio’s plans beyond 2021, revealing that another reboot of Fantastic 4 is in motion thanks to Disney’s absorption of the Fox property. However, Marvel Studios has no future plans for X-Men, another former Fox franchise, at the moment.

Saturday's wild unveiling of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase 4 at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 might have been your first time hearing about he Eternals -- set for release Nov. 6, 2020. They're the next superpowered group to join the MCU and Marvel Studios sure has assembled a superpowered cast to get everyone interested in this cinematic debut.

Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige introduced the cast and director Chloe Zhao at the Marvel Studios panel. Her previous film, The Rider, got a score of 92 on CNET sister site Metacritic. But it's also a naturalistic indie film, a far cry from the effects-driven banging and crashing of a Marvel movie. She'll no doubt bring a cool sensibility to the Eternals.

But what even is an Eternal, you ask? You've already met one: Thanos. The big purple mass murderer took center stage in Avengers: Infinity War and took on a whole bunch of heroes Endgame. Like Captain Marvel and Guardians of the Galaxy, The Eternals will shine the spotlight on Marvel's cosmic comic characters.

Ikarus will be played by Richard Madden. You know he's intense character because he's shooting eye-beams into the sky on the cover of the sixth issue of Marvel's 2008 Eternals comic series.

Marvel Comics

Who are the Eternals?

Thanos may be the only Eternal we've seen on screen, but Eternals have a comic history that stretches back to 1976. They were dreamed up by Jack Kirby, co-creator of the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, after he created the very similar New Gods for DC six years earlier.

In the comics, they're an evolutionary offshoot of humanity living on Earth who possess greater powers and have longer lifespans. The Celestials, a group of space gods, created them to defend Earth.

What else is coming in Phase 4?

Feige gave us plenty of other movies to salivate over during the MCU panel: Black Widow, Thor 4: Love and ThunderShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Blade

We Have a New Female Thor - Newser

(Newser) – Marvel Studios had a big, female-centric day at Comic Con on Saturday, with the biggest head-turner announced being an upcoming Thor movie—starring a woman. That woman is Natalie Portman, who told the crowd that the move "feels pretty good. I've always had a little hammer in me." Fans have a while to wait: Portman will star in Thor Love and Thunder, which is set to debut in November 2021, reports People. Portman was joined on-stage by original-recipe Thor, Chris Hemsworth. Marvel had a couple of other tricks up its sleeve:

  • Angelina Jolie will be starring in The Eternals, along with Richard Madden, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry.
  • Elizabeth Olsen will reprise her role as Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is due in May 2021. Disney Plus is also planning to roll out a TV series, called WandaVision, based on the Scarlet Witch and Vision characters.
  • And yes, Black Widow fans will get a standalone movie, in which Scarlett Johansson says she gets to play the heroine as "a fully realized woman." Due in May 2020.

Marvel's MCU Phase 4 plans revealed: Black Widow, Shang-Chi, Thor: Love and Thunder, new Doctor Strange and more - CNET

Marvel Studios' "Avengers: Endgame" Global Junket Press Conference

Marvel's San Diego Comic-Con panel dropped some massive news.

Caitlin Petrakovitz/CNET

Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, today unveiled the Phase 4 slate of the Marvel Cinematic Universe at Comic-Con. He hit the stage at Marvel's panel in Hall, announcing a tantalizing suite of new superhero movies, set for release over the next two years. A list that included Black Widow, The Eternals, Thor 4: Love and Thunder, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

He also teased the answer to the biggest lingering question since the merger of Disney and Fox. How long until we see some X-Men or other Marvel superheroes join our faves?

Plans are apparently in the works.

Oh, and surprise! Blade is back.

Let's catch our breath for a second!

Now playing: Watch this: Marvel's Phase 4 plan explained

3:04

Here is Marvel's Phase 4 schedule:

  • May 1, 2020: Black Widow
  • Fall, 2020: Untitled
  • Nov. 6, 2020: The Eternals movie
  • Feb. 12, 2021: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
  • Spring, 2021: WandaVision Disney Plus series
  • May 7, 2021: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
  • Spring, 2021: Loki Disney Plus series
  • Summer, 2021: Untitled
  • Fall, 2021: The Falcon and Winter Soldier Disney Plus series
  • Nov. 5, 2021: Thor 4: Love and Thunder

The long-rumored Black Widow is definitely happening and will star Scarlett Johansson, David Harbour, Florence Pugh, O-T Fagbenle and Rachel Weisz. Cate Shortland will direct the movie, which is set to hit theaters May 1, 2020. The movie will take place shortly after Captain America: Civil War, Harbour told IGN, making it a prequel to the more recent Avengers films.

We even got a bit of footage.

Meanwhile, Thor: Love and Thunder is coming Nov. 5, 2021. It's the fourth in the series, starring Chris Hemsworth, with Taika Waititi on for writing and directing. Perhaps the biggest news: Taika Waititi has announced that Natalie Portman will be Lady Thor in Thor 4.

Marvel also confirmed that The Falcon and Winter Soldier original TV series will arrive on Disney Plus in fall, 2020. According to some tweeters on the floor, it is part of Phase 4, so would fill that fall, 2020 slot.

WandaVision, a Marvel original TV series starring Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, became the next big news: Marvel confirmed it will arrive in spring, 2021.

And we have confirmation that Loki, the Marvel TV series starring Tom Hiddleston as the titular antihero, is coming to Disney Plus in spring, 2021.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was also announced. We know very little about that one, although the title does tease the kind of multiverse madness that reared its head in Spider-Man: Far From Home. The Doctor Strange sequel arrives May 7, 2021.

Marvel's The Eternals movie, starring Angelina Jolie, will arrive Nov. 6, 2020. We also have Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, starring Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, arriving February 2021.

And surprise... You thought that was all? Marvel Studios also announced Blade starring Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali.

Here's what we and others have been tweeting from the panel floor.

And here's news on Falcon and Winter Soldier, set to star Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan and Daniel Brühl.

So in short: a big year at Comic-Con for Marvel considering its no show in 2018. A lot to look forward to in the coming years.

Full "Watchmen" Trailer Sets the Stage for a Modern Civil War [Video] - Bloody Disgusting

After being scammed by “Lost” and what he did to Ridley Scott with Prometheus, I’ve since softened by hostile stance on Damon Lindelof. His impeccable HBO series “The Leftovers” proved he was capable of learning from past mistakes and actually delivering on his promises. With that, I am insanely excited for his modern take on Alan Moore’s groundbreaking graphic novel “Watchmen”, which will premiere this October on HBO.

Set in an alternate history where “superheroes” are treated as outlaws, the first full trailer that premiered out of the ongoing San Diego Comic-Con is nothing short of spectacular. The series appears to downsize the global scale of the graphic novel, giving it a more realistic approach. It also feels astoundingly relevant, taking on a lot of social issues we are dealing with in today’s society. I’m pretty stoked to see what kind of mystery Lindelof implants into the mythology and look forward to discussing each and every episode with you all on Twitter.

But I digress, here’s the trailer…

The cast includes: Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Jean Smart, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Hong Chau, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, and James Wolk.

“Watchmen” is produced for HBO by White Rabbit in association with Warner Bros. Television, based on characters from DC; executive producer/writer Damon Lindelof; executive producer/director, Nicole Kassell; executive producer, Tom Spezialy; executive producer/director, Stephen Williams; executive producer, Joseph Iberti.

There is a vast and insidious conspiracy at play.

A$AP Rocky latest: Trump weighs in on rapper's jail treatment, Swedish prime minister won't intervene - CNN

Trump -- in a Saturday tweet that comes one day after the Stockholm District Court decided the Grammy-nominated rapper should remain in custody for another week while prosecutors finish their investigation -- said he spoke with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven to discuss Rocky's case. A$AP Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, is being held in prison in Stockholm pending an assault investigation tied to an incident in late June.
Trump credits Melania with putting A$AP Rocky's plight on his radar
"Just had a very good call with @SwedishPM Stefan Löfven who assured me that American citizen A$AP Rocky will be treated fairly. Likewise, I assured him that A$AP was not a flight risk and offered to personally vouch for his bail, or an alternative," Trump tweeted Saturday.
Trump said the two teams agreed to speak again in the next 48 hours, but Lofven's spokesman Toni Eriksson said Saturday, "It is possible that there will be follow up calls but right now there is not one scheduled or planned."
Eriksson said the prime minister told Trump in the about 20-minute call Saturday that his government "neither can nor will" try to influence the judicial process with respect to A$AP Rocky's case.
"The Prime Minister made sure to point out that the Swedish judicial system, prosecutors and courts, are completely independent," Eriksson, who described the call as "friendly and respectful," said. "He also pointed out that everyone is equal before the law and that the government neither can nor will try to influence the judicial process.
Prosecutor Daniel Suneson said in a separate statement that the court decided the 30-year-old rapper should remain in prison because he was deemed a "flight risk."
The rapper has been detained since July 3 following a confrontation in Stockholm where he faces accusations of serious assault, according to CNN Swedish affiliate Expressen. Prosecutors are investigating a brawl that broke out on June 30, which A$AP Rocky is suspected of being involved in.
The President's involvement in the case came at the request of celebrities and the first lady -- the latest incident in which star influence has swayed Trump to make certain decisions.
Trump on Friday credited Melania Trump with bringing A$AP Rocky's plight to his attention.
The President added, "Many members of the African American community have called me -- friends of mine -- and said, 'Could you help?'"
Trump also revealed on Twitter that he spoke to Kanye West about the situation. And on Thursday, Kim Kardashian West thanked Trump, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Trump's son-in-law and senior White House adviser Jared Kushner for their efforts in trying to get A$AP Rocky released.
Kardashian West had previously appealed to the President for him to commute the sentence of Alice Marie Johnson, a first-time nonviolent drug offender.
Last year, "Rocky" actor Sylvester Stallone advised Trump to grant boxing legend Jack Johnson a posthumous pardon.
