'Scary Stories' Leads Newcomers with $20.8M Debut as 'Hobbs & Shaw' Repeats at #1 - Box Office Mojo

by Brad Brevet
August 11, 2019

It wasn't as close a race at the top of the weekend box office as we thought it might be heading into the weekend as Universal's Hobbs & Shaw held on much better than expected and easily retained the #1 spot for a second week in a row. As for the weekend's crowd of six new wide releases, CBS Films, eOne and Lionsgate's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark led the way with nearly $21 million, followed by a decent performance from Paramount's Dora and the Lost City of Gold while Fathom and Trafalgar's release of Bring the Soul: The Movie appears to have eked its way into the top ten.

Leading the weekend was Hobbs & Shaw for the second weekend in a row. The film held on quite well in its second weekend, dipping just -51% for an estimated $25.4 million sophomore frame and a domestic cume that now stands at $108.5 million.

Internationally, Hobbs & Shaw added another $60.8 million internationally, pushing its overseas cume to $224.1 million for a global tally that now tops $332 million as it enters its second week in release. This week saw the film open in five new markets including a $6.9 million launch in France, a $2.6 million debut in Italy and a $1.6 million opening in Belgium. The film has still yet to open in Korea, where it will debut on August 14, followed by an August 23 launch in China.

In the runner up position is where we find the first of the weekend's five new wide releases in CBS Films, eOne and Lionsgate's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. The PG-13 thriller topped pre-weekend expectations and delivered an estimated $20.8 million this weekend. The $25 million production received a "C" CinemaScore from opening day audiences while playing to a weekend crowd that was 57% female and 54% of the overall audience was aged 25 or older.

Disney's The Lion King ended up in third place, delivering an estimated $20 million. The film's domestic cume now stands at $473 million as it enters its fourth weekend in release.

Internationally, The Lion King launched in Japan this weekend with an estimated $9.3 million for a second place finish. The film's international cume now totals $861.5 million for a global tally reaching $1.334 billion, topping Beauty and the Beast ($1.263b) to become the highest grossing film among Disney's "live-action" reimaginings not to mention the 12th highest grossing worldwide release of all-time. Additionally, depending on how you look at it given media and industry confusion over whether the film is truly live-action or animated, The Lion King is now the highest grossing "animated" release of all-time worldwide, topping Frozen's $1.276 billion.

Paramount's release of Dora and the Lost City of Gold saw the live-action adaptation of the animated Nickelodeon series debut with an estimated $17 million. The film received an "A" CinemaScore from opening day audiences while playing to a weekend crowd that was 57% female and 54% of the overall audience was aged 25 or older.

Internationally, Dora debuted in 11 overseas markets this weekend with an estimated $2.5 million. Leading the way was Russia with an estimated $878,000 opening. The film will continue to expand internationally over the next few months ending with a November 7 release in Brazil.

Rounding out the top five is Sony's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, dipping -42% as it entered its third week in release with an estimated $11.6 million. The film's domestic cume now stands at just over $100 million.

Internationally, Once Upon a Time debuted in Russia with an estimated $7.7 million. The release was the film's first overseas major market debut with openings in France, UK, Australia, Brazil, Germany and Spain set for next weekend followed by Mexico (Aug 23), Japan (Aug 30), Italy (Sep 18) and South Korea (Sep 26).

Just outside the top five is where we find Fox's release of The Art of Racing in the Rain. The drama debuted in 2,765 locations and finished on the lower end of expectations with an estimated $8.1 million. The film received an "A-" CinemaScore playing to an audience that was 62% female and 59% of the overall crowd was aged 25 or older.

Internationally, the film launched in just ~16% of the overseas marketplace with an estimated $1.1 million with debuts in Brazil and the United Kingdom accounting for roughly half that figure. The film will continue to launch internationally throughout the year culminating in an early December release in France.

Right behind it is Warner Bros. and New Line's The Kitchen, which fell well below even the lowest of expectations, bringing in an estimated $5.5 million from 2,745 theaters. The film entered the weekend as the worst reviewed feature among new releases and came away with a "B-" CinemaScore from an audience that was 51% female and 89% were over the age of 25.

And rounding out the top ten is Fathom and Trafalgar's release of Bring the Soul: The Movie, a new documentary feature centered on South Korean boy band BTS. The film began playing in theaters on August 7 and this weekend, playing in 873 locations, estimates have it edging out A24's The Farewell for a place in the top ten with an estimated $2.29 million and a domestic cume that now totals over $4.4 million after five days in release.

Just outside the top ten is Bleecker's release of Brian Banks, which finished pretty much right on expectations with an estimated $2.1 million from 1,240 locations.

In limited release, Roadside's The Peanut Butter Falcon opened in 17 locations with an estimated $205,236 ($12,108 PTA); Amazon's One Child Nation opened in two theaters with an estimated $22,244; and Sony Classics debuted After the Wedding in five theaters with an estimated $57,124 ($11,425 PTA).

Next weekend will be yet another busy week when it comes to new releases as four new films will make their theatrical debut over the weekend, but not before Sony's The Angry Birds Movie 2 begins playing in over 3,500 locations on Tuesday. After that, Friday will see the release of Entertainment Studios's 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, which will swim into over 3,600 locations. Universal will also debut the R-rated comedy Good Boys in ~3,000 theaters, UAR's Where'd You Go, Bernadette? will release in over 2,300 locations and Blinded by the Light will launch in over 2,000 theaters.

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth separate, People reports - CNN

"Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time," a rep for Cyrus told the publication in a statement. "Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what's best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy."
CNN has reached out to representatives for the couple.
On Saturday, Miley posted photos of herself on Instagram in which she was not wearing her wedding ring.
"Mute me if you don't want SPAMMED," she captioned one post.
The singer has been traveling in Italy in recent days.
It had seemed things were going well for the couple. Cyrus recently told Howard Stern on his SIRIUSXM Satellite show that she loved Hemsworth even more after he saved their animals from a wildfire in Malibu, California last November.
Cyrus lost home in the fire.
She told Elle for it's August cover story that she was happy not fitting "into a stereotypical wife role."
"I think it's very confusing to people that I'm married. But my relationship is unique," Cyrus said.
"I don't know that I would ever publicly allow people in there because it's so complex, and modern, and new that I don't think we're in a place where people would get it," she said. "I mean, do people really think that I'm at home in a f***ing apron cooking dinner? I'm in a hetero relationship, but I still am very sexually attracted to women. People become vegetarian for health reasons, but bacon is still f***ing good, and I know that. I made a partner decision. This is the person I feel has my back the most. I definitely don't fit into a stereotypical wife role. I don't even like that word."
Cyrus and Hemsworth met in 2009 on the set of "The Last Song," and were on-again, off-again for years before he proposed in 2012. They then split and got back together in 2015.
In December 2018, Cyrus surprised followers when she posted Instagram shots of their wedding ceremony at her home in Franklin, Tennessee.

Miley confirmed the December wedding on social media by sharing images of the ceremony.

They got married at her home in Franklin, Tennessee in front of a small group of close family and friends.

The statement continues: "Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what's best while they both focus on themselves and careers.

The Hunt: Universal Pictures cancels film release - BBC News

Universal Pictures has pulled the release of The Hunt following a series of mass shootings and criticism from US President Donald Trump.

The Hunt, a satirical film in which liberals hunt Trump supporters and kill them for sport, was due to be released on 27 September.

Marketing of the film had already been put on hold following the El Paso and Dayton shootings.

Universal said the decision was made after "thoughtful consideration."

The Hunt's storyline is intended to reflect the divided nature of US politics.

One trailer for the film was pulled by ESPN. It was said to open with the sound resembling an emergency broadcast signal.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the liberal characters refer to their prey as "deplorables", a term used by Hillary Clinton to describe some of Mr Trump's fans in the run up too the 2016 elections.

Without naming the film, Mr Trump tweeted about an upcoming Hollywood release.

He said: "The movie coming out is made in order to inflame and cause chaos. They create their own violence and then try to blame others. They are the true racists and are very bad for our country!"

A statement from Universal said: "We stand by our filmmakers and will continue to distribute films in partnership with bold and visionary creators, like those associated with this satirical social thriller, but we understand that now is not the right time to release this film."

Universal Scraps 'The Hunt' Release Following Gun Violence Uproar - Hollywood Reporter

The studio's decision came a day after President Trump took aim at the film, saying it was "made to inflame and cause chaos." The story follows a group of elites hunting "deplorables" for sport.

Universal has decided to scrap the release of The Hunt — an R-rated satire in which elites hunt "deplorables" for sport — following a series of mass shootings across the country. The film had been set to hit theaters on Sept. 27.

The studio's decision came a day after President Donald Trump took aim at the film — though he didn't name its title — and Hollywood, saying on Twitter, "Liberal Hollywood is Racist at the highest level, and with great Anger and Hate! They like to call themselves “Elite,” but they are not Elite. In fact, it is often the people that they so strongly oppose that are actually the Elite. The movie coming out is made in order to inflame and cause chaos. They create their own violence, and then try to blame others. They are the true Racists, and are very bad for our Country!"

Even before Trump weighed in, the movie sparked an outcry on social media amid the public anger over gun violence and networks entered into the conversation when ESPN pulled an ad for the film that it had previously cleared. Subsequently, Universal paused its marketing campaign out of sensitivity to the recent mass shootings.

Referencing the decision to scrap the release altogether, the studio said in a statement, "While Universal Pictures had already paused the marketing campaign for The Hunt, after thoughtful consideration, the studio has decided to cancel our plans to release the film. We stand by our filmmakers and will continue to distribute films in partnership with bold and visionary creators, like those associated with this satirical social thriller, but we understand that now is not the right time to release this film."

The violent film from producer Jason Blum's Blumhouse Productions follows a dozen individuals who wake up in a clearing and realize they are being stalked for sport by elite liberals.

Directed by Craig Zobel, The Hunt is written by Damon Lindelof and Nick Cuse. The movie stars Betty Gilpin (GLOW) and Hilary Swank, representing opposite sides of the political divide.

"This was a decision that the studio came to with The Hunt filmmaking team, but ultimately it was about making the right decision, right now. It was a tough call for the company, but studio leadership, led by Donna Langley, all agreed that this film could wait," a studio source said.

A day after The Hollywood Reporter reported last week that the studio was reevaluating its marketing and overall strategy for the film, the studio officially suspended its marketing campaign.

The trio of mass shootings in Ohio, Texas and California, which resulted in over 30 deaths, have reignited the national debate about gun control.

Box Office: 'Scary Stories' Beats 'Hobbs & Shaw,' 'Dora' on Friday - Hollywood Reporter

Elsewhere, 'The Art of Racing in the Rain' is getting doused, while Quentin Tarantino's 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' prepares to cross $100 million.

CBS Films and eOne's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark — adapted from the best-selling children's horror book series by Alvin Schwartz — terrified the competition on Friday with an opening day haul of $8.8 million at the crowded August box office.

The Guillermo del Toro-produced Scary Stories is one of five new movies opening nationwide, and is the only one overperforming with a projected weekend gross of $20 million to $22 million. André Ovredal directed the tween- and teen-friendly movie, which earned a C CinemaScore, not uncommon for the horror genre.

Scary Stories is no doubt pleased it topped Friday's chart, but is expecting to lose the full weekend to holdover Hobbs & Shaw, the Fast & Furious spinoff starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.

Hobbs & Shaw grossed $7.9 million on its second Friday for a projected sophomore outing of $25 million-plus. On Saturday, its ninth day in release, the Universal pic will zoom past the $100 million mark domestically.

Disney holdover The Lion King is tipped to come in No. 3 for the weekend behind Hobbs and Scary Stories, followed by Paramount's Dora and the Lost City of Gold, an adaptation of the beloved books and kids TV series about a fearless young explorer and her anthropomorphic monkey pal, Boots.

Nabbing an A CinemaScore, Dora earned $6.5 million Friday for a projected $17 million opening. The movie is directed by James Bobin and stars Transformer actress Isabela Moner in the titular role, alongside Eugenio Derbez, Michael Pena and Eva Longoria.

Dora looks to place fourth, followed by Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, now in its third outing (Like Hobbs & Shaw, the Sony film is also getting ready to cross $100 million domestically).

Two new major Hollywood studio releases are getting doused: Fox 2000/Disney's canine dramedy The Art of Racing in the Rain; and New Line/Warner Bros.' The Kitchen, a period, female-fronted mob pic starring Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish and Elisabeth Moss.

Art of Racing in the Rain, earning an A- CinemaScore, grossed $3.2 million Friday for a projected opening of $8 million to $9 million. An adaptation of the Garth Stein novel of the same name that's directed by Simon Curtis, the movie stars Milo Ventimiglia as a race car driver who navigates through life with his golden retriever, voiced by Kevin Costner. Amanda Seyfried also stars.

The Kitchen is all-out bombing, earning $1.8 million Friday for an opening in the $5 million to $6 million range — a career worst for both McCarthy and Haddish. Critics have skewered the R-rated pic (its current Rotten Tomatoes is 21 percent), while audiences slapped it with a disappointing B- CinemaScore). The pic marks Andrea Berloff's directorial debut.

Brian Banks, an indie film from Bleecker Street, is looking at a nationwide start of $2 million-plus. Directed by Tom Shadyac, the drama stars Aldis Hodge and tells the true story of an American football player who fought to clear his name and resume his career after he was falsely accused of rape and imprisoned.

Here's a First Look at Travis Scott's Birthday Gift to Kylie Jenner - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

When you date someone like Kylie Jenner, it means you have to deliver some Kylie Jenner-worthy presents when the big day comes around — and Travis Scott’s birthday gift to the makeup mogul for her 22nd birthday on Aug. 10 did not disappoint. Here’s a closer look at what the ASTROWORLD rapper gifted his lady for her big day.

Scott’s gift to Jenner is fitting

Scott gave Jenner a diamond-encrusted Cuban link necklace featuring a sparkly set of “dripping” lips. It seems to be an ode to the design the reality star uses for the Kylie Cosmetics logo, which we’ve gotta say is pretty adorable.

Jenner posted a photo and a video of the chain on the morning of Aug. 10. The posts show her wearing a feathery hot pink dress with the necklace hanging around her neck. Jenner captioned the moment “Omg @travisscott.” She ended the post with a series of lovey-dovey emojis.

Now she’s got something to match the sparkling diamond-encrusted designer watch Scott gifted her back in May. According to People, the watch carries a price tag of $45,000, but Scott customized it, jacking up the total to around $100,000.

Scott started celebrating Jenner’s birthday early

On Aug. 5, the “SICKO MODE” rapper covered Jenner’s house with red roses in honor of her birthday. “My house is covered in ROSES! @travisscott And it’s not even my birthday yet!!!!!” Jenner captioned a video of the scene.

The video shows her walking through a sea of red roses while her and Scott’s daughter, Stormi, plays with the flowers in the background. It also features a card, in which Scott wrote that the party was “just getting started” — and he clearly was not kidding.

They’re currently enjoying an Italian getaway

This year, they’ve jetted off to Europe for Jenner’s birthday. They’re reportedly on a $250 million megayacht named “Tranquility,” along with Kris Jenner, Corey Gamble, Scott Disick, Sofia Richie, Yris Palmer, Stassi Karanikolaou, and a couple of others.

The ship features a beauty salon, a sauna, theater, steam room, swimming pool, and more. It costs $1.2 million to rent, but that’s small change to the self-made billionaire.

Fans actually believed that Scott planned on proposing to Jenner during the trip. The speculation only grew after the Kylie Skin mastermind was seen boarding a plan with what appeared to be a wedding dress. However, sources have said the two aren’t planning on marrying any time soon.

More to come.
