One of the top-performing beauty stocks could surge after 'Kylie Jenner' makeover - CNBC

Beauty company Coty is breaking out — in a good way.

The stock added more than 2% to begin the week after the beauty brand took a majority stake in Kylie Jenner's cosmetics company in a deal worth $600 million. Those gains add to a major gain for shares, climbing more than 80% so far this year.

Matt Maley, equity strategist at Miller Tabak, says the stock could be a risky bet with a worthy reward.

"This is a stock that until this year had been getting clobbered," Maley said on CNBC's "Trading Nation" on Monday. "It was down for four straight years, down well over 60%, and the rally has only just recently broken above that multiyear trend line. If it can take it a little bit further and break above $13.60, that will follow that upward break of the trend line with a very nice higher high and will confirm that its long-term trend has broken to the upside."

"A little bit more risk but more reward because whenever you buy any stock in the early stages of a change in trend, it always gives you a little more upside potential," Maley said.

The Coty-Kylie Jenner deal could be the beginning of a new trend for consumer-facing stocks, says John Petrides, portfolio manager at Tocqueville Asset Management.

"Here's a company that's willing to pay for the eyeballs and the followers that Kylie Jenner has more so than anything else. So, this could be a new paradigm for the consumer staples, packaged goods industry which, you know, has been suffering because of weak mall traffic and the rise of e-commerce because shelf space has basically become infinite," Petrides said during the same segment.

Coty acquired a 51% ownership position in Jenner's beauty and cosmetics portfolio, a deal announced at the beginning of the week. Jenner still has a partnership with Ulta Beauty to sell her products in its stores. That relationship began last November and led to several quarters of revenue growth for Ulta.

"I would expect more acquisitions like this going forward because it could be the new model for companies to acquire top-line growth by partnering up with key influencers," Petrides said.

Why an emotional ‘Dancing With the Stars’ episode ended in tears and angry viewers - The Washington Post

“Can I give it to James, please?” Brooke wept to host Tom Bergeron. His co-host, Erin Andrews, was also in tears.

“No, no,” Bergeron said gently, trying to comfort her. “That’s lovely of you to say that.” Brooke ran over to Van Der Beek and urged him to take her place. “Please, please,” she cried.

Van Der Beek smiled and shook his head. “You’re going to go crush it,” he told her. As the credits rolled, Brooke’s professional partner, Sasha Farber, and the rest of the cast surrounded them for a group hug. Brooke will compete for the Mirror Ball Trophy in next Monday’s season finale against singer Lauren Alaina, actor Kel Mitchell and “The Bachelorette” star Hannah Brown.

As emotions were already running high, the controversial decision to save Brooke prompted an angry outcry from fans on social media. The hashtag #DWTS was a top Twitter worldwide trending topic for hours. Many were extremely upset that Brooke was still in the running, both because they felt Van Der Beek was a better dancer — and the judges already saved her from elimination twice this season.

And although Brooke has been a favorite of the judges, edging out Van Der Beek and Brown for the highest overall average score, Van Der Beek still remained the front-runner. Last week, oddsmakers declared the “Dawson’s Creek” star as the safe choice to win; prediction website GoldDerby also had him as No. 1. But as the comments raged, others pointed to Brooke’s kind gesture at the end of the show.

Later, Brooke told “Entertainment Tonight” that although she has had “the time of my life” in the competition, she truly felt Van Der Beek deserved to go to the finale. “I don’t believe it’s fair that he was sent home, so I just wanted to give my spot to him,” she said. “He’s been through so much, and he’s overcome so many things. Especially this past week, I just felt it was right to give it to him. Obviously, he didn’t accept it. I talked to him and he was proud of me. He told me, ‘Don’t be afraid to shine.’ ”

At first, Monday seemed like just a regular episode, as each couple performed two dances. But when the judges offered criticism about Van Der Beek and partner Emma Slater’s cha-cha, Bergeron broke in. “I want to just allude to something. I know you’ll talk to Erin about it later, but this has been a tough week for you,” he said. “That could have been a complicating factor here.”

Right before they started their second dance, Van Der Beek — who told viewers in October that he and his wife were expecting their sixth child — elaborated in a prerecorded statement. “My wife Kimberly and I went through every expectant parent’s worst nightmare. We lost the baby,” he said, and started to cry. “The little soul that we had expected to welcome into our family took a shortcut to whatever lies beyond. You never know why these things happen. It’s what I’ve been telling my kids. All you know is that it brings you closer together. It breaks you open. It opens up your heart. Deepens your appreciation. Makes you more human.”

“I really didn’t think I would be dancing tonight,” Van Der Beek continued. “But Kimberly from her hospital bed said to me, ‘I’m not done watching you dance.’ … Kimberly, I’m dancing for you. I’m dancing for us.”

After he and Slater completed their fox trot, they both broke down weeping on the dance floor. Judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli were also shaken. “James, when tragedy strikes, it puts everything into perspective. And this is just a dance show,” Goodman said. “For you to come out and dance with so much feeling and emotion, I admire you so much. Well done.”

Van Der Beek’s young daughter started crying in the audience; when the actor noticed this, he walked over to pick her up and carry her to the stage where he waited for the judges’ scores. Andrews held up the microphone to Van Der Beek, who was still cradling his sobbing child. “I feel like scores are absolutely pointless at this point, but we’ll get them for you,” said Andrews, who was almost too choked up to speak.

The deeply emotional scene, however, led to the upsetting final moments. Bergeron announced that Brooke (who landed a perfect 30 and almost-perfect 29 for her two performances, with the judges declaring her dancing “magical”) was in the bottom two against Van Der Beek. Due to new rules this season, viewer votes and judges’ scores determine the bottom two, and then Inaba, Goodman and Tonioli decide whom to send home.

Inaba was first. “This is not easy. First of all, this is not at all what I expected to see here. You both are amazing. Both couples are fantastic,” she said, and paused for a long time. “The couple I want to save, and I’m so sorry, is Ally and Sasha. I’m so sorry, James."

Tonioli sadly concurred. “It’s incredibly hard. You’re all winners. You’ve all given fantastic performances,” he said. “This is very hard. We have to make a decision based on the season. And for that reason alone, I have to say Ally and Sasha.” (Goodman only votes in a tie, and he said he would have chosen Brooke.)

Social media immediately lit up with anger. Earlier in the episode, before she performed a complicated Charleston routine that earned her 30 points, Brooke — who said she previously faced bullying as the “worst” dancer in her former girl group Fifth Harmony — expressed doubt that she would remain on the show if she was in the bottom two once more.

“If I’m in the bottom two again, I don’t think they’re going to save me. So the pressure is on. There’s no room for error,” she said. “This dance has to prove why I deserve to be in the finale.”

James Van Der Beek makes a surprise announcement during 'DWTS' - AOL

James Van Der Beek made a shocking and devastating announcement on Dancing With the Stars Monday night, when he revealed his wife Kimberly Brook suffered a miscarriage on Saturday.

"My wife Kimberly and I went through every expectant parent's worst nightmare. We lost the baby," said Van Der Beek.

Van Der Beek continued, through tears, "The little soul that we had expected to welcome into our family took a shortcut to whatever lies beyond. You never know why these things happen. It's what I've been telling my kids. All you know is that it brings you closer together. It breaks you open. It opens up your heart. Deepens your appreciation. Makes you more human.”

Following his tragic announcement on the show, Van Der Beek took to Instagram sharing a heartbreaking post, stating, "Wrecked. Devastated. In shock. That’s how we’re feeling right now after the soul we thought we were going to welcome into our family in April, has taken a shortcut to whatever lies beyond this life.”

Van Der Beek and Brook, who were expecting their sixth child, have openly talked about their past miscarriages. However, on Monday, Van Der Beek shared that they've never suffered one "this late in the pregnancy, and never accompanied by such a scary, horrific threat to Kimberly and her well-being."

Van Der Beek also shared that he didn't think he would be dancing Monday night, but Kimberly insisted that he did. “I really didn't think I would be dancing tonight,” admitted Van Der Beek. “But Kimberly from our hospital bed said to me, I am not done watching you dance."

The actor then spoke to his wife, stating, "Kimberly, I love you. We're dancing to 'Take Me to Church' by Hozier, which is all about human connection that is so strong that it's out of control, that it's scary, that it rocks your soul. And that song has taken on a whole new meaning for me this week. When words fail, you sing. When there are no words, you dance. And that's what I'm going to do. Kimberly, I'm dancing for you. I'm dancing for us. So here we go, babe."

Sadly, in the end, even though Van Der Beek put everything he had left into his DWTS performance for his wife, it wasn't enough to keep him in the competition and the actor was eliminated.

Dancing With the Stars airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on ABC.

Taylor Swift is allowed to play her music at the AMAs after all - BBC News

A row involving Taylor Swift, her former record label and a couple of big name US politicians looks like it's coming to an end.

The group that owns most of her music, Big Machine, says she will be allowed to play her old tracks at the American Music Awards on Sunday.

Swift got high profile support last week, after accusing them of trying to stop her performing her back catalogue.

But the company says she didn't need their permission in the first place.

Taylor Swift's first six albums were released through Big Machine, which was bought out by a company owned by talent manager Scooter Braun earlier this year.

In a Tumblr post at the time she described this as the "worst case scenario" and accused him of years of "incessant, manipulative bullying".

Braun has worked with the likes of Kanye West and Kim Kardashian - both of whom Taylor Swift has had feuds with in the past.

He has consistently denied being unfair to her.

Then, last week, Taylor Swift posted on Twitter accusing Big Machine of trying to stop her performing tracks from her first six albums at the AMAs.

She claimed the label thought the performance would amount to a re-recording.

"I just want to be able to perform my own music," she said.

"That's it. I've tried to work this out privately through my team but have not been able to resolve anything."

She also accused Big Machine of holding back permission to use any music in an upcoming Netflix documentary about her life.

Her post got the attention of two big-name Democratic politicians: Senator Elizabeth Warren and congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

They criticised Scooter Braun's company and the effect big businesses can have when they buy up smaller ones.

Big Machine have twice denied doing anything wrong.

"At no point did we say Taylor could not perform on the AMAs or block her Netflix special," they said in a statement on their website last Friday.

"In fact, we do not have the right to keep her from performing live anywhere."

Now they've put out another statement - directly to the organisers of the AMAs.

"[We] have agreed to grant all licenses of [our] artists' performances to stream post show and for re-broadcast on mutually agreed platforms," it says.

"It should be noted that recording artists do not need label approval for live performances on television or any other live event."

'Dancing With the Stars' recap: James Van Der Beek handed heartbreak on top of real sorrow - USA TODAY

Sean Spicer has left the building. But five dancers returned for the "Dancing With the Stars" semifinals that will go down in history as one of the show's most heart-breaking episodes ever.

All the dancing news paled in light of news from James Van Der Beek, who announced tearfully on the show that his wife, Kimberly, pregnant with their sixth child, had miscarried over the weekend..

The pain continued as the night went on. But the show went on too, with each dancer performing two dances in an effort to make next week's finals. The first was a "redemption dance" chosen by the judges as the worst dance from each couple's repertoire, followed by a new routine.

Even by "Dancing With the Stars" drama standards, the tears and pain were flowing at a new level on Monday.

Here's what went down.

How we got here: Last week, Sean Spicer got the judges' boot

Lauren Alaina and Gleb Savchenko

Alaina was in the hot seat after falling into the "bottom two" last week. (The judges took Spicer's scalp and allowed the country singer to continue.) Worse, Alaina had to open the show with her worst dance, a paso doble she double-dribbled in Week 2.

But her dance floor command to the fitting song "What Doesn't Kill You, Makes You Stronger" showed a different Alaina who rocked a Cat Woman-esque black velvet dress cut to show off her scandalous thigh-high stockings.

The final routine had judge Len Goodman, who trained her up in rehearsals, smiling.

"You had lovely expression and aggression," said Goodman, calling it a "terrific routine, so much improved."

The judges gave straight nine scores.

First dance: 27/30

For the second dance, Alaina revealed a Viennese waltz to "Humble and Kind." She floated out in a sheer pink dress and twirled through a number both graceful and seemingly effortless.

Goodman swooned again, calling it "so sophisticated, so classic." Even with the compliments, she didn't get a 10, as the judges rolled out straight nines.

Second dance: 27/30

Total score: 54/60

Kel Mitchell and Witney Carson

Mitchell was compelled to dance a tango after tanking it on Week 1, with judge Bruno Tonioli tutoring and telling the actor to be "like a panther." Mitchell was so game-face in his tango that he wore giant red rose designs on his pants as he executed near-perfect moves to "Get Ready." He showed achingly perfect dance frame. Tonioli was standing and proud at the end.

"You delivered with everything I asked," said Tonioli. calling it "pure, real, proper tango."

Inaba said this dance star has "come the furthest" on the show.

The judges gave straight nines.

First dance: 27/30

For his second dance, Mitchell performed a contemporary routine to "I Will Always Love You" dedicated to the childhood friend he lost to gun violence. Mitchell was all drama in the number, lifting Carson perfectly.

The judges were moved to tears, especially Inaba, who called it "riveting, it was pure. I am so grateful."

Goodman said it all with no words, simply getting to his feet and applauding, starting another standing ovation. The weeping judges reached for the 10 paddles for a perfect score, putting Mitchell in solid position.

Second dance 30/30

Total score: 57/60

Ally Brooke and pro Sasha Farber

The pop star Brooke is going on a streak of three perfect scores over the past two weeks. But Brooke had to work the Viennese waltz she flubbed in Week 2 (where Goodman gave a six!). Brooke was all spinning dreams, twirling in her sparkling red dress against a night backdrop filled with stars, with Farber spinning her three times before sliding her across the floor to end it. Being Ally Brooke, she cried at the end.

Goodman, who trained her, called it a "wonderful dance. You went from a caterpillar to a butterfly." Still, he gave her a nine, her lowest score as Inaba and Tonioli swooned and pulled out the 10 paddles.

First dance: 29/30

Brooke is no dummy. She's twice been in the bottom two. So she knew her second dance Monday "could be my last." If so, she vowed to go down fighting in a brilliant banana yellow suit for a Charleston dance.

She tossed off her top hat and did every exhausting dance move possible in the infectious routine, before comically, and literally, falling off the back stage.

The judges were floored, with Inaba saying she belonged in the finals with her "show-stopper."

Goodman called it a "joyful performance." Brooke was still catching her breath as the judges pulled their 10 paddles out for her perfect score.

Second dance: 30/30

Total score 59/60

Hannah Brown and Alan Bersten

Inaba has always pushed Brown. So it was fitting that Inaba was the tutor for Brown's rumba after she criticized the lack of hip action from the Week 3 original, calling it a "cheerleading dance." The pre-dance video showed tense standoff in rehearsals that ended with both Inaba and Brown in tears, and hugging it out. Brown then unleashed the hips to "Dancing With a Stranger," with Bersten, shirt fully unbuttoned, leading.

She moved her hips so much her hair fell in her face. Brown finished strong and gave Inaba another make-up hug.

"You improved a heck of a lot," said Inaba, adding Brown was "very comfortable in your hips. I'm proud of you."

The judges gave straight nines.

First dance: 27/30

Brown cried again talking about her "Bachelorette" days gone by and love lost in the video before her second dance. She poured out her heart in a contemporary dance, with some stunning lifts that showed tremendous trust in Bersten.

"The emotion came out; it was a great dance," said Goodman.

Second dance 27/30

Total score 54/60

James Van Der Beek and Emma Slater

The "Dawson's Creek" star is one of the favorites going into the finals, even with a his Achilles heel cha cha cha, which he flopped on during Week 2. Before he announced his tragic news, Van Der Beek's disco cha cha cha to "Canned Heat," with him clad in a silver-glitter disco shirt and tight trousers, was thrilling. It featured a back flip that had fans gasping, fist-pumping, and repeated throwing of hands to the ceiling. He even tossed Slater about before ending sliding on his knees to seal it.

But the judges were not in the mood for disco. Self-proclaimed "nasty guy" Goodman felt there were too many gimmicks.

"I would have like to have seen more cha cha cha. Too much messing about," he said.

Tonioli called it a "Disco cha cha extravaganza," but had problems with the routine. The judges gave straight eights.

First dance: 24/30

Before his second dance, Van Der Beek stunned the audience with news of his wife's miscarriage. There was not a dry eye in the house as Van Der Beek told how his wife, still in the hospital, urged him on to dance. He performed a tango in her honor.

The pain was etched on his face in the passionate dance, which added to the pathos. Inaba was noticeably weeping as she gave her thoughts and scores.

"I don’t know how you got through that," she said, wiping away tears. "But in the midst of all the tragedy you’re going through, you gave me great posture."

The judges gave straight nine scores. But with his scores from both dances, the longtime favorite Van Der Beek was very much at risk of getting voted off.

Second dance: 27/30

Total score: 51/60

So what happened:

Could Van Der Beek actually get sent home on the night he had delivered such tragic personal news? That was the question on everyone's mind as the judges' scores were tallied with viewers votes to determine who would be cut, and who would be in the finals.

Kel and Whitney were the first saved, followed by Hannah and Alan and a comically shocked Lauren and Gleb.

Sure enough, the last two couples were Ally and Sasha along with James and Emma. Jaw-dropping real pain on the show for Van Der Beek who kept his composure.

The judges had to make the awful decision over who was spared and who was sent home.

"Do I really have to?" Inaba pleaded tearfully. "The couple I want to save is Ally and Sasha. I'm so sorry, James." She then put her head in her hands.

The next, decisive vote went to Tonioli

"It's incredibly hard," said the judge. "I have to say Ally and Sasha."

There was pure shock in the audience as it became clear, Van Der Beek was voted off.

The newly voted-off Van Der Beek hugged Slater with a look of peace on his face as the spared dancer Ally Brooke broke into tears, pleading to give her spot in the finals to Van Der Beek from the stage.

"Can I give it to James, please?" Brooke sobbed. It was not to be. Van Der Beek will not be competing in next week's finals.

Snyder Cut of Justice League Has No Release Plans from WB - Collider.com

justice-league-zack-snyder-set-photo

For two years now, we’ve had to deal with some form or another of “Release The Snyder Cut”, a referendum on the failure of Justice League at the box office and a conspiracy theory that insists there’s a superior version of the film sitting around but that Warner Bros. won’t release it. This culminated yesterday when that fan outcry spread to the actors of the film when Gal Gadot tweeted “#ReleasetheSnyderCut”, Ray Fisher, who played Cyborg, jumped on board, Zack Snyder himself retweeted Gadot, and finally Ben Affleck also tweeted out the hashtag.

THR reports that despite this swell of support, “no announcement of a release of any such cut is imminent.”

First, let’s break down what the “Snyder Cut” is and is not. It is not a finished version of the movie by any stretch. Before Snyder left the project, there was a cut of the movie, but it did not meet with what WB wanted. Keep in mind that at this stage, the cut of the film would not have the benefit of finished VFX or reshoots. To finish the VFX would be expensive and reshoots would be pretty much impossible since you’d have to coordinate all the actors’ schedule and probably pay them more money since they technically fulfilled their contracts’ stipulation for reshoots when director Joss Whedon came on board.

Second, what fans need to understand is that Warner Bros. is running a business, and to invest the money in releasing the Snyder Cut (insofar as it even can be released; remember, there are no reshoots so the footage he has is all he can work with) means that there needs to be a return on that investment. Fandom can be great for fostering discussion and creating community, but it can also, as we’ve seen in this case, create a conspiracy of sorts that blinds people to the larger realities of what’s required. If Warner Bros. is going to go to the trouble of paying to finish the VFX and marketing a new cut, they need to have some kind of confidence that a sizable audience will turn out for that, and fans aren’t enough.

Put yourself in the shoes of an average moviegoer. You already skipped Justice League the first time around because you heard it wasn’t very good. If you heard that the studio had invested more money into realizing the vision from the director of Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, would that be enough to see another superhero movie when the marketplace is already flooded with them? Is the best use of Warner Bros’ resources to take another chance on a film that flopped two years ago?

Personally, I’d like to see Zack Snyder’s cut of the movie simply because I think it’s more interesting to see a director’s personal vision rather than the Frankenstein’d studio cut we got two years ago. But I also think we need to recognize the serious hurdles to making that happen, and just constantly tweeting out #ReleaseTheSnyderCut isn’t a convincing case to spend more money on Justice League.
