Roxette singer Marie Fredriksson dead at 61 - CNN

The 61-year-old was a successful solo artist in her native Sweden before joining with Per Gessle to form Roxette, the act that went on to achieve global fame.
The duo's breakout single was "The Look," reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1989.
Another single, "It Must Have Been Love," became a smash hit after featuring in the soundtrack of the 1990 romantic comedy "Pretty Woman," starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts.
Roxette toured extensively, with Fredriksson gaining recognition as a talented live performer.
In 2002 she was diagnosed with a brain tumor, from which she recovered following aggressive treatment.
By 2009, Roxette were performing again, and even made several more albums.

But by 2016 doctors had advised Fredriksson to stop touring in order to prioritize her health.
"Marie leaves us a grand musical legacy. Her amazing voice -- both strong and sensitive -- and her magical live performances will be remembered by all of us who was lucky enough to witness them," Dimberg Jernberg Management said in a statement.
"But we also remember a wonderful person with a huge appetite for life, and woman with a very big heart who cared for everybody she met."
Former bandmate Gessle released a statement remembering Fredriksson as an "outstanding musician, a master of the voice, an amazing performer."
The pair were friends for more than 40 years, Gessle said.
"I'm proud, honoured and happy to have been able to share so much of your time, talent, warmth, generosity and sense of humour," he wrote.
"All my love goes out to you and your family. Things will never be the same."

Eminem Disses Nick Cannon Over Nick's Diss Verse Over Em's Diss Verse and Round and Round They Go - TooFab

Eminem has heard Nick Cannon's diss track and he's got something to say about it, but he didn't even bother to throw down a beat first. And yet, the internet has already declared him the winner, getting #RIPNickCannon trending at number one early Tuesday morning.

The rapper took to Twitter to defend himself from some of the allegations in Cannon's diss verse, primarily the parts where Nick called out his affluent lifestyle ... which is kind of the pot calling the kettle rich, isn't it?

In his first response, Eminem went straight with vitriol, calling out Nick. "U mad bro?" he asked before dismissing Nick's claims that he has a chauffeur before wrapping up his comments with a clown emoji. We think it's pretty clear what that meant.

In a quick follow-up tweet, though, the rapper went all parody and humor, sarcastically demanding an apology from "The Masked Singer" host.

Cannon responded with a series of tweets taunting Eminem, and reiterating his offer for the rapper to come to his show "Wild 'N Out" and lay down a rap battle. For his last taunt, he even shared a video of an assembled crowd awaiting Em.

The whole thing might be fun if we thought it was playful, but it's hard to say. Both Eminem and Nick Cannon have playful sides, but they've both been known to get fired up and passionate about things, too.

And in this case, Nick is doing all of this in defense of his ex-wife, and baby mama, Mariah Carey after Em's latest blast at her ... a target he's been shooting at for decades.

Em also lobbed a few lines at Nick himself, which is again nothing really new. Eminem and Mariah were briefly connected years ago, though Mariah has denied they ever hooked up, and the rapper has never quite let her drop off his radar when it comes to names to drop in his music.

Nor, does it seem, he's completely let go. Either that, or he's just playing ... hard!

The latest back-and-forth came in response to Cannon dropping a diss track called "The Invitation" as an official response to Eminem's initial diss. In the new song, which feature Suge Knight in an opening monologue backing Nick, who he calls "family." As for Em, Suge calls him "a bitch."

Check out Nick's verse below, where he name-drops Eminem's ex Kim, as well as his daughter Hailie:

I f--k with crack, but the white boy he f--k with crack (crack)

Pills and smack, shit, and he about to relapse

Call Kim, somebody get Hailie

And that other kid you raisin', that ain't even your baby (daddy)

Took a page out of Drake's book, this might get a Grammy

We going back to back 'til you respond on the family

My baby mama killed you off a decade ago

You're still crying about it, bitch, now who really the ho?

I called Joe to set you up and you fell for the job

Slim won't show for the video, 'cause he terrified of my squad

I heard your chauffeur got a video of you suckin' a c--k

You paid him off, then laid him off, now who really the opp?

Suge called me the new Pac, I ain't no killer but don't push me

How the f--k y'all got me battlin' Elvis Pussly?

The rest of the track laid into Em as well, with verses by rappers Hitman Holla, Prince Eazy and Charlie Clips, but Eminem didn't bother to respond to them. Having come up in battles, it's probably pretty easy to dismiss most who come after his self-proclaimed crown. But there's just something about Nick that Em can't leave be.

This whole thing comes a few days after Eminem used his verse in Fat Joe and Dre's track "Lord Above" to skewer Nick and Mariah.

In "Lord Above," Eminem raps, "Word to the Terror Squad, Joe, this is all puns aside though / I know me and Mariah didn't end on a high note / But that other dude's whipped, that p---y got him neutered / Tried to tell him this chick's a nut job before he got his jewels clipped / Almost got my caboose kicked, fool, quit, you not gon' do shit / I let her chop my balls off, too 'fore I lost to you, Nick."

Nick immediately took to social media in response to the verse, and even trashed Eminem on his Power 106 radio show, "Nick Cannon Mornings" on Friday. But his ire must have stayed up as he couldn't let it sit with those responses, elevating things to a diss track of his own.

Nick even praised Fat Joe's new album, while also continuing to diss Eminem. In the post, above, Fat Joe is featured alongside many of the artists featured on the new album. Over Eminem's pic, however, Cannon put a grandpa emoji.

"@FatJoe album is 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Star studded, he even did some charity work and dug @Eminem out his grave I mean cave!!" he captioned the post.

The pair first tussled publicly shortly after Nick and Mariah wed in 2008. In response, Eminem released "Bagpipes from Baghdad," where he asked, "Mariah whatever happened to us/Why did we ever have to break up?"

In the song, he also said he wanted her back and told Cannon to "back the f--- up." Cannon was looking to battle him on "Wild 'N Out" then, and he's apparently ready and eager to do it now, too.

That said, why invite Emimen to a place that's clearly going to be in Nick's corner? How about some neutral ground if they really want to throw down in a rap battle. Maybe James Corden could take it on in an installment of "Drop the Mic" that gets way, way, way too real.

Awkwafina was basking in the glow of her first ever Golden Globe award nomination at the "Jumanji: The Next Level" world premiere Monday.

The actress, real name Nora Lum, has been deluged with praise— along with the oddest kudos text she has received since the Monday morning announcement.

"The most unusual congratulations was my aunt texting me, telling me I should eat less grains. I really like ancient grains and she had read an article about grains," said Awkwafina from the red carpet. "And on the back of that (information), she gave me, 'Oh yeah, congratulations!' "

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

The comedian/actress admitted it's all been like a "surreal" dream since she found about the best actress in a comedy nomination news for her poignant role in Lulu Wang’s "The Farewell" (also nominated for best foreign film).

Awkwafina insists she had slept through the early morning announcements and only found out from the calls afterwards.

"I really didn't know (the nominations) were this morning," she said. "And I ate Korean barbecue last night. A lot of Korean barbecue."

She recovered enough to send out a statement Monday saying she was "beyond grateful."

"I grew up watching the Golden Globes every year, cheering for my favorite films and actors. It is surreal that I now get to go!" she wrote. "Wait, I do get to go right?"

By Monday evening she was a little more mentally recovered, walking the red carpet for the "Jumanji" sequel in which she plays a thief video game character.

"I'm going for the ride," she said of the awards run. "It's just a lot of fun."

Miss Universe 2019: 'May every little girl see their faces reflected in mine' - BBC News

"I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me, with my kind of skin and my kind of hair, was never considered to be beautiful.

"I think that it is time that that stops today."

That's the message from newly-crowned Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi, who is from South Africa.

More than 90 women from across the world took part in the pageant which was held in Atlanta in the US on Sunday.

Zozibini beat Puerto Rico's Madison Anderson and Mexico's Sofia Aragon in the final three to take the tiara.

Finalists in the competition were asked a range of questions on topics such as climate change, protest and social media.

In her final question, 26-year-old Zozibini was asked what we should be teaching young girls today.

Her answer was leadership.

"It's something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time - not because we don't want to, but because of what society has labelled women to be," she said.

"I think we are the most powerful beings on the world, and that we should be given every opportunity.

"And that is what we should be teaching these young girls - to take up space."

Zozibini is the first black woman to win the competition since Leila Lopes in 2011.

The Angolan former winner congratulated her in a post on Instagram, writing: "Congrats girl you did us very proud."

Relfecting on her win, Zozibini wrote: "Tonight a door was opened and I could not be more grateful to have been the one to have walked through it.

"May every little girl who witnessed this moment forever believe in the power of her dreams and may they see their faces reflected in mine.

"I proudly state my name Zozibini Tunzi, Miss Universe 2019!"

The hashtag #MissUniverse was trending on Twitter and she even got a shout-out from Oprah Winfrey.

Several people highlighted the importance of a black woman with natural hair winning a beauty pageant.

Zozibini, who won Miss South Africa in August, is described by Miss Universe as "a proud advocate for natural beauty".

It adds that she's "a passionate activist and engaged in the fight against gender based violence".

"She has devoted her social media campaign to changing the narrative around gender stereotypes."

Although her exact prizes aren't revealed by Miss Universe, Zozibini's expected to have won a year's stay rent-free in an apartment in New York - and a salary worth around $100,000 (£76,000).

She'll also fly around the world for media and modelling opportunities.

Miss Universe and other beauty pageants regularly come under criticism - with some people calling them "outdated".

The events have tried to move with the times and several now focus on the contestants' achievements and giving women a voice.

But Miss Universe still has a swimwear competition where contestants pose in bikinis - although that part isn't shown on TV.

Last year, Great Britain's contestant Dee-Ann Kentish-Rogers told Radio 1 Newsbeat that pageantry still has a place.

"One of the biggest problems that women have in the 21st century is having people listen to them," she said.

"We have had to be very creative in making a space for ourselves."

She admitted that questions about pageantry and beauty standards are "understandable".

"As someone who's gone through the system, I would advocate for it for young women."

Another of the world's biggest beauty pageants, Miss World, has come under criticism recently because of its rules banning mums from competing.

Model Veronika Didusenko, 24, was crowned Miss Ukraine 2018 - but she had her title taken away when organisers found out she had a son.

She's decided to take legal action against the contest over its policy.

"I want to make them more fit for nowadays and reflect women's reality today - who can perfectly balance between their careers and their personal life," she told Newsbeat.
