Trudeau: Harry and Meghan's Canada move still needs to be worked out - CNBC

Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, might have won the approval of the queen to move to Canada, but the country's prime minister said there are "still lots of discussions to have" over the plans.

Speaking to Canadian television network Global News on Monday, Justin Trudeau said there were still details to iron, both in the U.K. and Canada, including security costs.

"There are still a lot of decisions to be taken by the Royal Family, by the Sussexes themselves as to what level of engagement they choose to have," Trudeau said. "We are obviously supportive of their reflections but have responsibilities in that as well."

"We're not entirely sure what the final decisions will be," he added. Trudeau said the federal government had not been consulted about the move up until now and that the costs would have to be assessed.

"I think most Canadians are very supportive of having royals be here, but how that looks and what kind of costs are involved, there are still lots of discussions to have," Trudeau said. "There is a general feeling of appreciation for the Sussexes."

Royal showdown

Trudeau's comments came after a royal showdown Monday afternoon with senior royals gathered in the queen's Norfolk estate, Sandringham, to discuss Meghan and Harry's shock announcement last week that they were to step back from their positions as "senior royals." The couple want to work to become financially independent and split their time between the U.K. and Canada.

Harry had face-to-face talks with the queen, Prince Charles and Prince William with Meghan reportedly joining the discussions by phone from Canada.

The queen, who was reportedly not consulted ahead of the announcement and was said to be disappointed by the decision, issued a statement in which she said a "period of transition" had been agreed with Harry and Meghan.

"My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan's desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family."

"Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives," the statement noted, adding: "It has therefore been agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the U.K."

Details over how the couple will achieve financial autonomy and who will foot the bill for their security retinue are still unclear. The queen ended her statement noting that there were "complex matters for my family to resolve, and there is some more work to be done, but I have asked for final decisions to be reached in the coming days."

The couple had spent Christmas on Vancouver Island and Meghan, who has previously lived in Canada, is now reportedly back in British Columbia with the couple's son, Archie.

Selena Gomez: Rare | Review - Pitchfork

Selena Gomez was reborn from a hermetically-sealed fantasyland back into reality when, in 2015, she released her second solo record, Revival. It was the pop star’s beginning of a transition away from Disney incorruptibility towards songwriting that better represented the crossroads at which she found herself. Unlike the overproduced electropop of her 2013 debut, Stars Dance, Revival reflected her expanding sexuality, power, and interest in telling her own stories; Gomez actualized these objectives by posing nearly nude on the album cover, serving among its executive producers, and working with specific songwriters to help translate her experiences. As she proclaimed on the title track, it was her “time to butterfly.”

Over the next five years, Gomez’s journey towards emancipation would be challenged by serious struggles with anxiety, depression, and chronic illness that sidelined her music career and threatened her life. But in 2017, the same year she underwent a risky kidney transplant due to complications from the autoimmune disease lupus, Gomez shared a series of genre-curious singles including the Talking Heads-samplingBad Liar.” After checking the cultural pulse, the then most-followed woman on Instagram logged off, removing herself from the public eye once more. Besides popping up for the occasional movie role or fashion collaboration, Gomez focused on herself. “I just needed to let my old self go,” Gomez told Zane Lowe this month.

When Gomez shared the ballad “Lose You to Love Me” last fall, it seemed like the work she put into her physical and emotional wellness had clicked. The song looks at the ways she lost herself in a relationship and solemnly promises to never make that mistake again. While dropping hints at which supposedly “Sorry” singer had been dragging her down, Gomez reclaimed her own narrative. Her anguished soul-searching struck a nerve: “Lose You to Love Me” became Gomez’s first Billboard No. 1. Though the song’s drama is an exception, its moral of losing love and gaining self is the guiding ethos of her third record, Rare. While none of these 13 songs attempt the subtle weirdness of “Bad Liar” and the emotional thesis—self-love!—can be a bit one-note, Rare is the 27-year-old’s most cohesive record to date. It feels spiritually in tune with the woman who once cheerfully told Vogue that people would be surprised to learn how much she loves “depressing things.”

But Rare’s celebration of autonomy, resilience, and growth is overwhelmingly upbeat. After waving goodbye to a lover who does not respect her worth on the blissed-out self-titled opener, Gomez cleanses her heart with an electro-pop party on “Dance Again.” Dancing through pain is by now a tried-and-true motif in pop music, but the sentiment holds extra weight for Gomez, who undoubtedly knows from her lupus how it feels to be powerless over your body. But Rare doesn’t dwell on heavy realities like chronic illness or the ice-cold grip of depression or, really, any sadness lingering after heartache. When Gomez looks back on toxic relationships wracked with mistrust or self-sabotaging anxiety spirals, her perspective is more grateful than regretful, as if to say that everything in life is a valuable lesson.

Gomez’s biggest hurdle as a musician has long been her voice. Low and breathy, her understated vocals are better suited for intimate contemplation than big, belted catharsis. For the first time, Gomez seems to have a grasp on her range and mainly sticks to a husky, bedroom-eyes murmur instead of attempting bravado. Her best performance arrives on the muted, throbbing “Vulnerable.” Though the wordplay can be a bit heavy-handed—“If I let you cross my finish line, then would you wanna make it?”—Gomez sounds firm and assured even when she dips into a whisper. Guided by a vast team of songwriters and producers including Swedish duo Mattman & Robin, Simon Says, and Finneas (of the Eilish brood), Gomez dips her toes into some du jour sounds: “Ring” does a diet-“Havana” with a “Smooth” riff thrown in for good measure; “Fun” aims for a “Bad Liar” redux with a snappy bassline, handclaps, and bubbly frivolity; “Cut You Off” plays with downtempo funk and a familiar yoo-oo-oo chorus. Notably, the songwriting duo of Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter, whose melodic playfulness was all over Revival, only appear together on “Lose You” and its clubby companion single “Look At Her Now.”

But Gomez’s malleability can also be her downfall. Though she has a writing credit on every song, a majority of the tracks on Rare’s second half feel impersonal and underwhelming. These songs feel like they could be sung by anyone, and you can’t help but wonder what Gomez saw in them. On “People You Know,” she avoids confronting any real feelings of regret by wallowing beneath a frigid, tiptoeing beat and stale chorus. The trumpet-tinged kiss-off “Kinda Crazy” feels totally inconsequential. Any reference to the relationship-in-question’s halcyon days is so submerged in tired figures of speech about fire and water that their actual separation feels anticlimactic. What is meant to be a seductive liaison on “Crowded Room”—which features a middling appearance from rapper 6LACK and borrows a feeling from Cassie circa 2006—comes off as lethargic and forced.

Rare’s insipid gear shift culminates with its closer, “A Sweeter Place.” Despite his brief contribution, the song feels dominated by the melodramatic-stoner aura of its guest, Kid Cudi, all Auto-Tune and heavy synths. If only the song focused on unpacking one of Rare’s most compelling—albeit cheesy—lines: “Holding hands with the darkness and knowing my heart is allowed.” Sadly, this intriguing notion of finding dignity in depression is erased by a painfully vapid chorus: “Is there a place where I can hide away/Red lips, French kiss my worries all away/There must be a sweeter place/We can sugarcoat the taste.”

“Vulnerable ain’t easy, believe me, but I go there,” Gomez proclaims near the beginning of Rare. Maybe so. But it’s difficult to come away from Rare with any real perspective on who Gomez is other than that she doesn’t want to be the person she was, whoever that similarly mysterious shadow was. Unfortunately for pop stars everywhere, exposing your soul does not equal examining it. Gomez tries, but never quite succeeds at doing either here. Her introspection can only go so deep when it’s paired with sleek, easy songwriting that lets her slip by, just another specter.

Prince Harry and Prince William say bullying story is false - CNN

In a joint statement sent to CNN, spokespeople for the Duke of Sussex and the Duke of Cambridge said: "Despite clear denials, a false story ran in a UK newspaper today speculating about the relationship between the Duke of Sussex and the Duke of Cambridge."
A royal showdown at Sandringham looms over Harry and Meghan's decision to go it alone
"For brothers who care so deeply about the issues surrounding mental health, the use of inflammatory language in this way is offensive and potentially harmful," the statement said.
It followed a story in the Times of London on Monday, reporting that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Meghan and Harry, felt "pushed away" by William's "bullying attitude."
The article suggested the brothers "fell out because William wasn't friendly towards Meghan" and that the Sussexes were "constantly being bullied."
Harry and Meghan shocked the world and "disappointed" the rest of the royal family last week when they announced they would be scaling back their official duties to pursue their private interests.
Why does Meghan get all the blame?
They added that they wanted to work towards becoming financially independent.
Royal sources have told CNN it wasn't the decision itself but the timing of their announcement that left senior members of the family feeling hurt.
Queen Elizabeth II, Harry's grandmother, had expressly asked the prince to hold off releasing any statements regarding the couple's future, CNN understands.
The royal family is set to hold a summit Monday to discuss Harry and Meghan's future, a palace source told CNN on Saturday.
The Queen, Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince Harry will all attend the meeting at Sandringham, the Queen's country estate in rural Norfolk, about 100 miles north of London.
Meghan, who has returned to Canada -- where the couple and their baby son Archie spent the Christmas holidays -- is expected to call in. It's unclear when she will return to the UK.
Harry and Meghan's decision to walk away has given the Queen a royal headache
The summit will be the first time the senior royals have met since the Sussexes made their announcement on Wednesday.
In spite of the way it has unfolded, the couple's decision to step back from senior royal duties is not that surprising. While it may have come as something of a bombshell to casual observers, the writing had been on the wall for some time.
Harry and Meghan have both spoken previously about the toll public scrutiny has taken on them. Harry also flagged up the possibility of living abroad during the couple's controversial TV documentary, which aired in October.

Meghan Markle plans to move to Los Angeles only after Trump leaves office, report - Fox News

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly want to make Los Angeles their new home following the announcement that they will "step back" as members of the Royal Family, but only after Donald Trump's presidency ends.

Even though the couple plans to live in Canada, their true goal is to eventually have a home or business in Los Angeles -- only after Trump leaves office, anonymous sources told the Daily Mail.

Markle, 38, has been openly critical of Trump, reportedly calling him "divisive" and misogynistic" back in 2016. The Duchess of Sussex threatened to move to Canada if he defeated Hillary Clinton back in the 2016 election, according to the outlet.

Markle was on maternity leave during Trump's first state visit to the United Kingdom and couldn't make it, according to Politico. After news broke that she would miss his visit, he was asked by a Sun reporter during a pre-trip Oval Office interview back in June if he knew Markle was critical to her during his campaign, the outlet added.

“I didn’t know that, no. I didn’t know that. No, I hope she’s OK. I did not know that, no,” Trump replied.

“A lot of people moving here, so what can I say? No, I didn’t know that she was nasty,” Trump said when asked if he knew why she wasn't "very nice" to him, according to the outlet.

AFTER PRINCE HARRY-MEGHAN MARKLE DECISION, BUCKINGHAM PALACE AID HAS 'NEVER SEEN' MONARCHY IN SUCH PERIL

When discussing where they want to live, Markle and Harry, 35, reportedly used the words "North American," according to the Daily Mail. Although "it doesn't pin them down to one place," the outlet added.

The newspaper added the move is "by no means an immediate thing." Markle, however, grew up in Los Angeles and her mother, Doria Ragland, still lives there, the outlet said.

Critics' Choice Awards 2020: 10 Things the TV Cameras Missed - Hollywood Reporter

JLo, Laura Dern and Nicole Kidman mingled, stars placed Oscars predictions, and attendees weighed in on the shift to plant-based meals.

Sunday night's 25th annual Critics' Choice Awards once again brought together a star-studded group of TV and film's biggest names, but some of the best moments of the Santa Monica-based show didn't make it to air. With The Hollywood Reporter inside the room, here are the top things the TV cameras didn't show, from the best A-list interactions to Oscar predictions.

1. Following in the footsteps of last week's Golden Globes, the award show replaced its usual dinner with a plant-based meal that included vegan burritos from Baja Fresh and Impossible Burgers from The Counter. The decision, which Joaquin Phoenix celebrated in his speech, was also popular with other stars, like Barry's Anthony Carrigan who called the choice "a move in the right direction," adding "a lot of this food goes uneaten, so we might as well just not kill any animals for that reason. That'd be a pretty sad way to end your life if you're an animal, to just go uneaten on a plate at a celebrity event." The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Alex Borstein said that she she had plans "to go to a steakhouse after this,"as Desus Nice said "I'm just happy there's free food" and The Kid Mero chimed in "there's going to be a lot of tuxedos at In N Out later."

2. With this year's shortened awards season, Critics' Choice fell on the eve of Monday morning's Oscar nominations, which meant stars were in the mood to spill about their favorites of the year. Maisel creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino said that they were "team Irishman all the way down the ticket" after seeing Martin Scorsese's film three times in theaters; Catch 22's Christopher Abbott said he hoped for noms for Uncut Germs and Adam Sandler, When They See Us' Asante Blackk celebrated Phoenix, Honey Boy's Noah Jupe wanted to see recognization for female directors and One Day at a Time showrunner Gloria Calderon Kellett called Knives Out "my favorite movie this year; also I didn't know that there was a Cuban lead on that movie and I don't feel like anyone's talking about that, it's an incredible immigrant story."

3. For those more closely involved in this year's Oscars race, Sunday's award show served as a welcome distraction, like for The Farewell director Lulu Wang, who said she wasn't thinking about — and trying not to think about — Monday's possible nom for Awkwafina, who just came off a big win at the Golden Globes. "I talked to my mom this morning and she just said 'You never know what's good, what's bad, and the stuff that you can't control just let it go. At the end of it, whether you rise up or you come down, just know who you are and just remember that and that's how you keep moving forward,'" Wang told THR on the red carpet, while also still celebrating her star's recognition last weekend. "Just knowing the risks that [Awkwafina] took to do this role — her first dramatic role, having to learn Chinese, having to go all the way to China — and also it's a $3 million film and we're amongst the conversation with so many major studio films, so for all of those reasons it really felt important."

4. Florence Pugh, also in awards contention for Little Women, said that she won't be waking up at 5 a.m. to watch the nomination announcements, as "I think that's just setting yourself up to have a complete anxiety attack." One thing she will continue to focus on though, is her fan-favorite Instagram, where, just in the last few weeks, she has taken viewers on cactus surgery and ice cream-making journeys. "I think Instagram and social media is wonderful but also so weird, and I feel like I would find it hard to just be perfect and poised all the time," she said of her decision to embrace the medium. "That's me, so my Insta stories are always silly, have to be, couldn't pretend any other way."

5. Sarah Snook, who stars as Shiv on Succession, has also been feeling the fan love since the HBO hit has exploded to new heights in its second season. Admitted that she's "obsessed with it as well, so I get to share a common theme with other people," Snook says she's become more frequently stopped on the street and recently had an Uber driver who "was like 'Wait a minute, my wife loves you!' And he called his wife and I loved it," she said. "it's such a bizarre thing to experience in my real life — it's not real life but it is."

6. Inside the show in Santa Monica's Barker Hangar, entertainment's biggest names mixed and mingled, with Jennifer Lopez chatting and snapping pictures with Nicole Kidman and Laura Dern (and also greeting Netflix boss Ted Sarandos); Bornstein catching up with fellow big winner Phoebe Waller Bridge; Lupita Nyong'o in conversation with Sterling K. Brown, making her way over to Ava DuVernay; Zendaya talking with the Succession cast and Wang — Impossible burger in hand, stopping by the Marriage Story table to chat with Noah Baumbach.

7. Although audience members, comprised of TV critics all over the country, are discouraged from selfie-hunting during the show, every commercial break turned into a mad dash for photos, with Adam Sandler, Quentin Tarantino and Awkwafina among the most popular subjects.

8. The night also served as a reunion for past co-stars and co-workers, with Saoirse Ronan embracing her Lady Bird best friend Beanie Feldstein, Milo Ventimiglia with Gilmore Girls creators the Palladinos and Christina Applegate standing and cheering for her Youth in Oregon opposite Billy Crudup.

9. Despite the star power of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, the two had their speech cut short for a commercial break when accepting the award for best ensemble for The Irishman. Costar Harvey Keitel took over the mic and kept the speech going, despite it being off-air, telling the room, "The great Constantin Stanislavski said there are no small parts, only small actors," to which Pacino yelled from the back, "Short actors!" Keitel continued, "I tried to convince Al of this, but he wouldn't switch parts with me. Maybe next time," and De Niro stepped up one more time to thank Netflix for their support.

10. The show ended with some big surprises, including a win (or a tie, shared with Sam Mendes) for best director for Parasite's Boon Joon Ho, with the room exploding with applause and giving an ovation to the Hollywood favorite. Eddie Murphy, who received a lifetime achievement award, also got a standing O, as well as for When They See Us' big win. The biggest shock, though, may have been Once Upon a Time in Hollywood for best picture, which left many stunned and the room buzzing as Tarantino and his team (minus Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt) took the stage.
