Ken Jennings wins ‘Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time’ - Deseret News

SALT LAKE CITY — It’s official: Ken Jennings is the “Greatest of All Time” — at least when it comes to “Jeopardy!”

The victory comes 15 years after Jennings’ initial legendary run on the game show — a 74-game winning streak that totaled $2.52 million.

Now, Jennings is taking home $1 million and a big fancy trophy.

The “Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time” tournament began a week ago, and the prime-time event has drawn an average of 15 million viewers per episode, putting it on a level with the 2019 NBA finals and the 2019 World Series.

From the beginning, “Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time” has predominantly been a tight competition between Jennings and James Holzhauer, who holds the single-game record at $131,127.

That was also the case Tuesday night.

During the first game of the match (one match equals two regular “Jeopardy!” games), Jennings pulled a classic Holzhauer move, going “all in” and wagering all of his money on the Final Jeopardy question.

On Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2020, Ken Jennings won the “Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time” tournament, taking home the $1 million prize.

It paid off.

The clue: “This area of Greece, home to Pan, is synonymous with a rural paradise; it’s a setting for Virgil’s shepherd poems the ‘Eclogues.’”

Both Jennings and Holzhauer gave the correct response — “Arcadia” — but in a rare move, Holzhauer only wagered a portion of his money. He added $11,381 to his $22,800 total, bringing his Game 1 total to $34,181.

Jennings, who had the lead with $32,800, doubled that score — an aggressive bet that brought his Game 1 total to a staggering $65,600.

Now it was just a matter of maintaining the momentum.

For a while, it looked like Holzhauer was going to pull off a win — Jennings made smaller wagers this time around, and Holzhauer went all in, wagering his $20,200 on the following Daily Double: “This big landlocked African country was surprised to be added to the USA’s 2017 travel ban, but was removed from the list in 2018.”

In what has been a common play for all contestants throughout the tournament, Holzhauer seemed to be stumped on the answer, waiting until the very last second to blurt out the correct answer: “What is Chad?”

With that response, Holzhauer took a large lead with $40,000 and closed out the game with $44,000 to Jennings’ $23,000 and Brad Rutter’s $1,400.

It all came down to the Final Jeopardy round. And it was a category all three contestants were likely familiar with: Shakespeare tragedies.

“There’s stuff that’s disproportionately ‘Jeopardy!’” Jennings previously told the Deseret News in an interview where he gave tips about auditioning for the show. “Like they don’t ask about opera a lot, but way more than it comes up in real life, so learn the composers of 20 operas. The Shakespeare plays are another manageable list.”

Jennings knows his Shakespeare. The Final Jeopardy clue: “He has 272 speeches, the most of any non-title character in a Shakespeare tragedy.”

Jennings came up with the correct answer: the villainous Iago. In a surprising move, the BYU graduate played it safe and didn’t wager anything, keeping his Game 2 total at $23,000.

All eyes were on Holzhauer.

His answer? “Who is Horatio?”

His wager? All $44,000.

With Holzhauer down to zero, Jennings was officially the winner, with a two-game total of $88,600. Jennings walked over to shake host Alex Trebek’s hand before Holzhauer and Rutter lifted him up on their shoulders so he could hoist the trophy in the air.

Throughout the “Jeopardy! Greatest of All Time” tournament, all three contestants paid tribute to longtime host Alex Trebek.

Oh, and if you’re wondering about Rutter’s response to the Shakespeare clue, he used the moment to pay touching tribute to the longtime “Jeopardy!” host, the constant star of the show all three contestants have expressed gratitude to over the course of the tournament.

“You’re the best, Alex,” Rutter wrote.

In match 3 of the tournament, Holzhauer lovingly labeled Trebek the “Ghost” — the “Greatest Host of Syndicated TV.” Tuesday night, Jennings earned his own new label — the “Goat (Greatest of All Time)” of “Jeopardy!” winners — showing the world that he hasn’t lost a step since his incredible run on the show 15 years ago.

'The Bachelor': Fans Are Dragging Hannah Brown for Leaving Peter With the Worst Parting Gift - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Two episodes into The Bachelor prove this may actually be “the most dramatic season yet.” Pilot, Peter Weber, had his hands full (literally) in the last episode. Ex-girlfriend and former Bachelorette, Hannah Brown, showed up two separate times during the premiere. The other contestants were less than thrilled to see the pageant queen seemingly still vying for Weber’s heart. If you didn’t catch Hannah Brown’s season of The Bachelorette, you might not be familiar with her lengthy pageant history. She began competing at age 15 around the Alabama area (where she’s from). Hannah B. placed first-runner up in Miss Alabama Outstanding Teen 2010, followed by Miss Alabama Teen USA 2011.

From there, the pageants became bigger. Hannah B. garnered the Miss Tuscaloosa crown in 2012. She went on to compete for Miss Alabama but didn’t make the cut.

Hannah B. eventually took a break to attend the University of Alabama. However, she never left the sparkly gowns and bright, white smile too far behind.

In 2017, Hannah B. tried her hand at Miss Alabama again, but she still didn’t place. In 2018, she tried again and made it, competing in Miss USA thereafter.

Hannah B. keeps her pageant past close, even throughout her reign as The Bachelorette. You can take the sparkly gown out of the girl, but you can’t take the girl out of the sparkly gown.

Fans are ticked at what happened with Hannah B. and Weber

When you enter into a reality dating competition on TV, you can’t expect things to flow normally. Weber may have tried to move one from his past with Hannah B., but she had other plans.

A dramatic ending to the premiere carried over into the beginning of the second episode. Hannah B. and Weber tortured themselves with another “will-we-won’t-we,” leaving the other contestants in the dust.

Hannah B. debated on staying in the house to compete for Weber’s heart. She admitted part of her cared for him and wondered “what if,” but in the end, Weber said he couldn’t do it and left Hannah B. to tend o the other women.

Needless to say, the cringe-worthy scenario had fans screaming at their TV’s for Hannah B. to let Weber find his own path — without her. Still, she let him with one final memory that many immediately condemned.

Reactions to the situation prove Hannah’s parting gift is the worst

Thanks to Hannah B.’s pageant past, the girl loves one thing that most consider a biohazard. All that time Weber and Hannah B. hid away talking (and Hannah B. crying), her dress assaulted the entire area, including Weber. Fans are not cool with it.

“Did anyone else notice ALL THE GLITTER HANNAH GOT ON PILOT PETE,” one fan tweeted. “CanNOT get over the glitter on Peter’s hair/beard/suit after emotionally explaining to the girls about his conversation with Hannah,” another added.

Another viewer said, “Hannah B so wearing that glitter dress to deliberately cuddle with Peter and leave glitter all over him so the other girls see it is a POWER MOVE if I ever did see one.”

It didn’t end there. The comments, GIFs, and photos dragging Hannah B. for a) wearing a glitter dress and b) getting it all over “Pilot Pete” has America livid.

While Hannah B. ultimately went home, she was sure to leave Weber with the worst parting gift in history. We all know that once something is glittered, it’s glittered forever. Thanks a lot, Hannah B.

His Grandmother Is Canada’s Queen, but Harry Won’t Get Much Special Treatment - The New York Times

OTTAWA — Queen Elizabeth II may have blessed plans by Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, to become part-time residents of Canada, but the monarch’s status as the country’s formal head of state doesn’t mean the couple can expect any special treatment on many fronts.

When it comes to immigration, taxation and even what they call themselves, Harry and Meghan will be no different than any other newcomers to Canada.

But one area where they could receive unique consideration is their personal security.

The couple, known formally as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have offered little detail about their plans, including where they intend to live in Canada, how much of their time they will spend in the country and how they plan to become independent of funds set aside by Britain for its royals.

But when they do make their move, the duke and duchess won’t get a V.I.P. pass through immigration.

“There are no provisions in the Citizenship Act that confer Canadian citizenship status to members of the royal family,” Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, a government department, said in a statement. “In order to become legal permanent residents of Canada, they would need to apply through our normal immigration processes. However, members of the royal family are not required to seek authorization to come to and stay in Canada as visitors.”

There was widespread speculation in Canada’s immigration community that the couple would be just visiting rather than calling Canada home to avoid a number of complexities.

“I doubt very much they would apply for permanent residency,” said Sergio R. Karas, an immigration lawyer in Toronto. “That would not be a good option for them.”

As visitors, the couple can remain in Canada for up to six months without any sort of special visa. The catch, however, is they wouldn’t be able to work in the country, where coins and $20 bills bear likenesses of the queen, if that is indeed part of their financial freedom plan.

Helen Park, an immigration lawyer with the Dentons law firm in Vancouver, British Columbia, said that while they couldn’t seek employment, they could manage businesses based outside Canada while there as visitors.

But if they decide to become residents of Canada with the right to work in the country, there are several possible channels the couple could explore of varying difficulty and plausibility.

The easiest, but perhaps least likely, avenue would be for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s immigration minister to grant them residency on “compassionate grounds.”

“But is Harry going to say, ‘My grandmother is chasing me out of England’?” Mr. Karas said.

The government, Ms. Park said, could also declare them to be people of significant economic social or cultural benefit to Canada — a measure commonly used for prominent artists or literary figures.

Either form of queue cutting might prompt a political backlash.

While Canada is generally welcoming to immigrants, the process is expensive and time-consuming. As a result, many recent immigrants might resent any jumping in line by the royal couple. A large percentage of new Canadians include people from places like India, where the British monarchy is still strongly associated with colonial repression and is deeply unpopular.

Meghan’s past life in Canada could, in theory, also provide the couple a way into Canada as residents. An American, she lived in Toronto for several years while filming the American television legal drama “Suits,” when she was known as Meghan Markle. While her immigration status during that time is not public information, Canada has a special visa provision for actors working on foreign film and television productions in the country.

Ms. Park said that some of her actor clients had used their time in the country to obtain residency. If — and Ms. Park noted that it’s a big if — Meghan took that step, she could then sponsor Harry for residency.

Regardless of their immigration status, the couple may face tax issues in Canada. Heather L. Evans, the executive director of the Canadian Tax Foundation, a research group, said there was no hard and fast rule for determining who is a resident for tax purposes. Instead, she said, “individual facts and circumstances are important, especially in cases of dual residents.”

Courts, she said, have found that in some cases, people who spend less than half of the year in Canada are still residents for taxation purposes.

Even murkier is the status of the duke and duchess’s royal titles if they make Canada home. In 1919, Canada’s Parliament put an end to citizens and residents being able to accept noble titles from Britain with a resolution that was affirmed twice more, as recently as 1988.

Conrad M. Black, the former press baron, had to give up his Canadian citizenship to become Baron Black of Crossharbour. There is, however, no precedent for how the resolution, which some argue is of limited legal force, would apply to a member of the royal family moving to Canada.

In a country where there is sometimes grousing about the cost of security for the prime minister, the question of who will pay to protect Harry, Meghan and their son, Archie, has been widely raised. On Monday, Mr. Trudeau said that was one of many questions that remain to be resolved.

“We are obviously supportive of their reflections but have responsibilities in that as well,” he said, referring to security. “We’re not entirely sure what the final decisions will be.”

Currently, Canada covers the cost of the security provided to the couple by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police because Harry and Meghan’s official status in Britain makes them “internationally protected persons” under Canadian law. Kent Roach, a professor of law at the University of Toronto, said that after withdrawing from official life, Meghan and Harry would lose that status.

But citing news media estimates that their annual security cost will be about 2 million Canadian dollars, or about $1.5 million, Mr. Roach anticipates that the government-funded guard will remain.

“Strict legal definitions will in the end not matter that much in this matter, especially if the cost of protection is, as reported, less than $2 million,” he said. “Canada has received that much worth in good press already.”

Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, might have won the approval of the queen to move to Canada, but the country's prime minister said there are "still lots of discussions to have" over the plans.

Speaking to Canadian television network Global News on Monday, Justin Trudeau said there were still details to iron, both in the U.K. and Canada, including security costs.

"There are still a lot of decisions to be taken by the Royal Family, by the Sussexes themselves as to what level of engagement they choose to have," Trudeau said. "We are obviously supportive of their reflections but have responsibilities in that as well."

"We're not entirely sure what the final decisions will be," he added. Trudeau said the federal government had not been consulted about the move up until now and that the costs would have to be assessed.

"I think most Canadians are very supportive of having royals be here, but how that looks and what kind of costs are involved, there are still lots of discussions to have," Trudeau said. "There is a general feeling of appreciation for the Sussexes."

Royal showdown

Trudeau's comments came after a royal showdown Monday afternoon with senior royals gathered in the queen's Norfolk estate, Sandringham, to discuss Meghan and Harry's shock announcement last week that they were to step back from their positions as "senior royals." The couple want to work to become financially independent and split their time between the U.K. and Canada.

Harry had face-to-face talks with the queen, Prince Charles and Prince William with Meghan reportedly joining the discussions by phone from Canada.

The queen, who was reportedly not consulted ahead of the announcement and was said to be disappointed by the decision, issued a statement in which she said a "period of transition" had been agreed with Harry and Meghan.

"My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan's desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family."

"Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives," the statement noted, adding: "It has therefore been agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the U.K."

Details over how the couple will achieve financial autonomy and who will foot the bill for their security retinue are still unclear. The queen ended her statement noting that there were "complex matters for my family to resolve, and there is some more work to be done, but I have asked for final decisions to be reached in the coming days."

The couple had spent Christmas on Vancouver Island and Meghan, who has previously lived in Canada, is now reportedly back in British Columbia with the couple's son, Archie.
