Deborah Dugan Placed on Administrative Leave as Recording Academy President/CEO a Week Before Grammys - Billboard

Board Chair Harvey Mason Jr. will serve as interim President and CEO

Deborah Dugan, who took over as Recording Academy president/CEO on Aug. 1, has been placed on administrative leave just over a week before the 2020 Grammy Awards due to "serious concerns" brought to the board of trustees' attention.

“In light of concerns raised to the Recording Academy Board of Trustees, including a formal allegation of misconduct by a senior female member of the Recording Academy team, the Board has placed Recording Academy President and CEO Deborah Dugan on administrative leave, effective immediately," a statement provided to Billboard Wednesday night (Jan. 16) reads. "The Board has also retained two independent third-party investigators to conduct independent investigations of the allegations."

"The Board determined this action to be necessary in order to restore the confidence of the Recording Academy’s Membership, repair Recording Academy employee morale, and allow the Recording Academy to focus on its mission of serving all music creators," the statement continues. "Board Chair Harvey Mason Jr. will serve as interim President and CEO pending the conclusion of the investigation."

Dugan could not be immediately reached for comment, although a source says she has hired litigator Bryan Freedman to represent her.

Some sources contacted by Billboard would not address the specific allegation of misconduct, but allege that, despite a thorough and months-long search for a new CEO, Dugan had not been a good fit almost from the start.

“It’s heartbreaking for people who care deeply about the organization that someone they trusted to fill that position would so quickly become so at odds with the organization,” said a source close to the Recording Academy.

Her relationships within the organization deteriorated rapidly. “Once there were some indications that she was not cooperating with the staff and the board, everything unraveled surprisingly quickly and in a very complex way,” the source says. “It wasn’t like a single incident. It was a series of issues. I think it goes way beyond not just being a good fit.”

Another source concurs, adding that “when you go in any job, you educate yourself in the past, as well as where you’re at to know how to move forward and I don’t think any of that was done appropriately by her." Academy insiders met with Dugan a number of times to try to "hit the reset button and get on the same page," a sources says, but to no avail.

Though the statement stresses that Dugan, who relocated from New York to Los Angeles to take the job, is on administrative leave and had not departed, when asked if there was an expectation that Dugan might return following the investigation, one source replied "no."

However, another source says that the staff, many of them loyal to Dugan’s predecessor, Neil Portnow, and the board were so entrenched in their way of thinking that Dugan was met with resistance at every turn and was unable to move forward.

“She was a huge source of discomfort for everyone there because she believed she was coming to be an agent of change, but they don’t really want change at all,” the source says. “They had entrenched ways of doing business and anything she tried to change was met with ‘That’s not the how we do it.’”

"On the one hand, you think this might be good to shake up a place that needs to be shook up, but apparently it wasn't right or she went too far with it too quickly," another source says.

Dugan ruffled feathers within the industry by not courting executives and going straight to talent. "Instead of trying to make inroads [with] heads of labels and publishers, she would go around them to artists and managers," a source alleges. "That political side of the role should be more to do with label heads and publishing heads and not cutting those people out. Those are the relationships that you want to build and people were noticing that she wasn't doing it."

The move continues the tremendous upheaval the Recording Academy has experienced starting nearly two years ago after Portnow told reporters backstage after the 2018 Grammy Awards ceremony, when only one woman won an award during the televised portion of the show, that women artists should “step up.”

His remarks, which he later walked back, ignited a firestorm including calls for his resignation. In May 2018, the Recording Academy announced that after leading the organization for 17 years, he would leave in July 2019 at the end of his contract.

The search for a replacement began with the mission for someone who would increase the Academy’s diversity and inclusivity. Dugan, the Academy’s first female president/CEO, was officially announced in May 2019 as Portnow’s successor.

Up to the end, there was no outside evidence of discord, despite whatever turmoil may have been occuring at the Recording Academy's Santa Monica offices. On Wednesday, an upbeat profile of Dugan, the former chief executive at non-profit AIDS-advocacy group RED, ran in the Los Angeles Times and sources say she was working on the Grammy show as usual. The 62nd annual Grammy Awards take place Jan. 26, in Los Angeles.

While the news will be industry scuttlebutt, a source says it will not affect the Grammy telecast since the news is too inside baseball to concern fans of the show. Additionally, Dugan had decided weeks ago that she would not address the audience during the show, as Portnow always did, so there will be no gap to fill in that regard.

Late Thursday night, Mason sent a letter to all members of the Recording Academy, alerting them of the change and of the investigation, but added, "we are unable to share the details of the concerns to protect employee privacy," and that Recording Academy Industry, Government Affairs & Member Relations Officer Daryl Friedman and VP of membership and industry relations Laura Segura Mueller will share additional information" when available and appropriate.

Wendy Williams Apologizes For Mocking Joaquin Phoenix - E! NEWS

Wendy Williams is under fire for mocking Joaquin Phoenix.

On Tuesday, The Wendy Williams Show host made an insensitive comment about a scar the Joker actor has above his lip during the "Hot Topics" segment of her show. "When he shaves off his mustache, he's got a hairline fracture, he's got one of those — what do you call it? Cleft lip, cleft palate," she told the audience, pulling her lip up to further mock the condition.

While Phoenix has never publicly addressed the origin of his scar, the Golden Globe winner did describe it as "not a surgically fixed cleft" but a "nonsurgical scar he was born with" in a 2019 interview with Vanity Fair.

Shortly after the show, the controversial star received backlash from upset viewers. Among them was Cher, who has been an ally for the cleft palate community. "THESE ARE THE PPL @WendyWilliams IS MAKING FUN OF," she tweeted, replying to a tweet that featured images of the "Believe" singer meeting with cleft palette sufferers.

She continued, "Joaquin Phoenix was a Child,& We Don't Know What He Had To Go Through. HE IS ONE OF THE GREAT ACTORS OF OUR TIME,MAGNETIC,& MORE THAN HANDSOME!! SHE WILL BE JUDGED FOR THIS FOREVER."

Her comments also caught the attention of Canadian football player Adam Bighill, whose baby boy Beau just underwent cleft palate repair surgery, and said her comment "clearly promotes bullying."

Williams then issued an apology. "We're thinking about Beau today as he is in surgery," she wrote on Twitter. "I want to apologize to the cleft community and in Beau's honor, our show is donating to @operationsmile and @AmerCleftPalate and encourage our Wendy Watchers to learn more and help support the cleft community."

But, it's safe to say that Cher wasn't pleased with the daytime host's apology. "THERE IS NO APOLOGY FOR WHAT SHE DID…& LAUGHED ABOUT !!" she tweeted. "I KNOW THESE CHILDREN,& ADULTS.THEY GO THROUGH HELL,THEIR PARENTS GO THROUGH HELL !! Fk Her Apology. SHE WANTS TO KEEP HER JOB !! I CANT CONTAIN MY ANGER !!"

In another tweet, Cher posted a side-by-side picture of Williams mocking those with cleft palates and Phoenix, writing, "DOES AN APOLOGY MAKE UP FOR THIS."

Bighill, however, was quick to forgive Williams. "Thank you @WendyWilliams for your apology, your donation, and for thinking of Beau today for his surgery," he responded. "I forgive you, and I encourage others to as well. I wish you all the best."

Prince Harry makes first public appearance since Megxit - Page Six

Prince Harry was seen in public Thursday for the first time since his stunning announcement that he was quitting the royal family.

The Duke of Sussex was spotted staring intently at his phone in the back of a car as he was driven into Buckingham Palace for his first official royal engagement since Megxit.

The 35-year-old prince has managed to keep a low-profile in the week since the bombshell news, sneaking into a historic royal summit Monday — while wife Meghan Markle has made public appearances at a series of women’s group meetings while staying with baby Archie in Canada.

Royal biographer Angela Levin told Sky News that the world would be seeing “a sad Harry who puts on a good face because of his sense of duty.”

Harry is due to host the draw for the Rugby League World Cup, as proudly confirmed by the Royal Family on its official Twitter account — which notably referred to him as His Royal Highness in another message.

Harry and Meghan’s titles and roles in the family are understood to be part of ongoing debate during the “period of transition” the Queen granted the couple who she says “wish to live a more independent life.”

Harry also appeared in a video Thursday supporting a “Mental Fitness Charter” aimed at rugby players — with some potentially telling quotes that could relate to his own drama.

He called rugby a community that “takes care of its own” and advised players not to just “grin and bear it” and hide their feelings.

Prince Harry attends first public engagement since royal family crisis talks - CNN

The Duke of Sussex will host the draw for the Rugby League World Cup 2021 at Buckingham Palace today.
It is the first time the prince has appeared on royal duty since he and his wife took the world by surprise when they announced they want to become financially independent and split their time between Britain and North America.

The midday draw will see Harry announce the games for the men's, women's and wheelchair tournaments, as he meets with representatives from the 21 nations taking part in the contest -- which kicks off on October 23, 2021.
The Duke of Sussex has been Patron of the Rugby Football League since December 2016 when he inherited the role from the Queen.
Buckingham Palace said in a statement: "The Duke of Sussex has always strongly believed in the role of sport to bring communities together and change people's lives.
"Rugby League World Cup 2021 is keen to ensure a real social impact from the three tournaments, focusing on communities across some of the most deprived areas in England."
Meghan makes first public appearance since stepping back from royal family
Ahead of his appearance, The Duke of Sussex voiced his support for the launch of the Rugby League Mental Fitness Charter, which aims to provide training for players, match officials and volunteers to look after their mental health, the Rugby League said Thursday.
The Duke of Sussex said in a video that he was "proud" to support the Rugby League World Cup 2021 Mental Fitness Charter.
"This Charter will build on the brilliant work already happening in rugby league by committing to training and educating all those involved in the tournament, and the wider rugby league family, not only in how they can look after their own mental fitness but also support others to do the same," he added.
Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, visited a women's center in Vancouver, Tuesday, making her first public appearance since she and her husband made the bombshell announcement.
Meghan did not dial into royal crisis talks with Queen, source says
She has spent recent days in Canada with baby Archie, while the royal family has attempted to deal with the ongoing crisis.
Harry attended crunch talks with the Queen and other members of the family on Monday.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the Queen said the family would have preferred the couple to "remain full-time working members of the royal family," but that they "respect and understand" Harry and Meghan's "wish to live a more independent life."
On Wednesday, Harry used the sussexroyal Instagram account to announce that the German city of Düsseldorf will host the sixth Invictus Games in 2022.
The Invictus Games are a multi-sport event specifically held for wounded or disabled veterans to participate in.
Harry -- who spent a decade in the UK armed forces -- said in a message posted on Instagram: "I hope everyone in Germany is ready for what will be an incredible week of sport! I have no doubt that the German public will get right behind these Games and that every single competitor can expect a warm welcome and an amazing atmosphere."

Wrestler Rocky Johnson, father of Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, dies at 75 - Honolulu Star-Advertiser

Rocky “Soulman” Johnson, a WWE Hall of Fame wrestler who became better known as the father of actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, has died. He was 75.

WWE issued a statement on Johnson’s death tonight. Johnson and Tony Atlas became the first black world tag team champions in WWE history when they defeated The Wild Samoans on Dec. 10, 1983.

The statement didn’t provide details on the cause or location of Johnson’s death.

“A loss for every fan of WWE, Rocky Johnson was a barrier-breaking performer. Our thoughts are with his family at this time,” WWE executive and wrestler Paul “Triple H” Levesque tweeted.

Johnson later helped train his son, who adopted the Rocky moniker from his father. Johnson came to his son’s aid after a match at WrestleMania in 1997. The Rock inducted his father into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2008.

Former professional wrestler Brian Blair, another 1980s WWE star, was friends with Johnson for decades and they still went to church together in the Tampa, Florida area. Blair told The Associated Press today that Johnson had complained of an unspecified illness of late and had missed church that he attended with Blair and other former wrestlers. Blair said Johnson’s wife, Sheila, was distraught over her husband’s death.

“He was just under the weather, he thought he had the flu or something,” Blair said by phone. “I said, ‘You, need to get checked out, Rocky.’ He said he’d be OK. Then he missed this Sunday, a few days ago. When I talked to him again, he said he still wasn’t feeling good and he still missed church. He still didn’t get checked out. I talked to Sheila and she said he was just being stubborn. He died at home, today.”

Johnson was born Wayde Douglas Bowles and started his wrestling career in the mid-1960s. He spent the bulk of his career in the National Wrestling Alliance and later joined the then-World Wrestling Federation in the 1980s. He formed a tag team with Atlas known as “Soul Patrol” and became of one the popular teams of the era. Johnson retired in the early 1990s, but helped introduce his son to officials at WWE.

Doobie Brothers, NIN, T-Rex, Depeche Mode Inducted Into Rock Hall - Ultimate Classic Rock

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's Class of 2020 will consist of the Doobie Brothers, T-Rex, Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, Whitney Houston and the Notorious B.I.G.

The Doobie Brothers, T-Rex, Houston and Notorious B.I.G. made the cut in their first years on the ballot, with the late rapper getting the nod in his first year of eligibility. Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode were both on the ballot on two previous occasions.

In addition, Jon Landau, a former music critic who became Bruce Springsteen's manager and co-producer, and Eagles manager Irving Azoff will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award, which is given to non-performers who have contributed to the growth of rock 'n' roll.

This marks the first time that the winner of the fan vote -- the Dave Matthews Band -- will not be inducted. Of the five artists who comprised the latest fan ballot, only the Doobies, who finished third, will be inducted into the Rock Hall, with Matthews, Pat Benatar, Soundgarden and Judas Priest missing out this year.

The induction ceremony will take place at 8PM ET on May 2 at the Public Auditorium in Cleveland. For the first time, HBO will broadcast the event live rather than edited and aired a few weeks later. The Hall will announce the performers, presenters and other guests in the weeks leading up to the event. The ceremony will also be broadcast live on SiriusXM's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Radio.

Tickets for the ceremony go on sale to the general public via Ticketmaster on Feb. 27 at 10AM ET, with a pre-sale for donors beginning Feb. 25.

Thomas Markle Is Gearing Up to Testify Against Duchess Meghan in Court - Cosmopolitan

Because there isn't already enough royal drama in 2020, Meghan Markle's father Thomas Markle is reportedly gearing up to testify against her in court. Truly, how did it come to this?!?!? According to Us Weekly, Thomas is set to offer evidence against Duchess Meghan in her and Prince Harry's legal battle against the publishers of the Mail on Sunday, who printed a private letter she sent her dad.

The Daily Mail reports that Meghan's estranged father is expected to be called as a key witness for the defense, which is honestly awful and the last thing Meghan needs right now. On top of that, apparently Thomas has already given lawyers private text messages between himself and Meghan, which were exchanged before her wedding. We won't be going into the texts here due to them being, uh, private, but....WTF, dude?!

FYI, Prince Harry released a letter announcing that he'd be taking legal action against Associated Newspapers (who publish The Mail on Sunday) back in October, saying:

"Unfortunately, my wife has become one of the latest victims of a British tabloid press that wages campaigns against individuals with no thought to the consequences—a ruthless campaign that has escalated over the past year, throughout her pregnancy and while raising our newborn son. There is a human cost to this relentless propaganda, specifically when it is knowingly false and malicious, and though we have continued to put on a brave face—as so many of you can relate to—I cannot begin to describe how painful it has been."

Ugh, poor Meghan and Harry. Oh, and in case you forgot, on top of all freakin' this the couple are dealing with fallout from their decision to step back as senior royals. More on that over here.
