Gayle King 'very angry,' calls out CBS over clip of her asking about Kobe Bryant's rape charge - USA TODAY

Gayle King is responding to backlash over a controversial question.

During an interview with WNBA player Lisa Leslie about the legacy of her friend Kobe Bryant, King brought up a sensitive subject: The basketball legend's 2003 rape charge.

The criminal case against Bryant was dropped on Sept. 1, 2004, after the accuser declined to testify. In August of that year, the woman filed a civil lawsuit, which was settled out of court on March 2, 2005.

In a two-part video posted to Twitter, the "CBS This Morning" host discussed the controversy.

"If I had only seen the clip that you saw, I would be extremely angry with me too. I am mortified, I am embarrassed and I am very angry. Unbeknownst to me, my network put up a clip from a very wide-ranging interview, totally taken out of context and when you see it that way, it's very jarring," she explained.

She said that she was "advised to say nothing," but that wasn't "good enough for (her)."

"I wanted to get Lisa's take on it as a friend who knew him well. What she thought, where that would stand," she said. "It was very powerful when she looked me in the eye, as a member of the media, to say it's time for the media to leave that alone and back off. During the course of the interview, I asked follow-up questions because I wanted to make sure her position and perspective were very clear."

She added that she talked to Leslie Wednesday night and "believes (she) was OK with the interview" before pointing fingers at the network again.

"For the network to take the most salacious part, when taken out of context, and put it up online, for people who didn't see the whole interview is very upsetting to me and is something I'm going to have to deal with them," she said.

King said she had spent time with Bryant on "many social occasions," describing him as "kind and warm," and is still mourning his loss.

"The last thing I would want to do is disparage him at this particular time," she added. "I hope people understand that."

Before posting the video, King responded to criticism in a statement to USA TODAY.

"I understand why people are upset seeing that clip out of context," she said. "I hope they will now watch the entire wide-ranging interview. We asked a longtime friend of Kobe Bryant’s to talk to us about his legacy and their friendship and Lisa Leslie did exactly that."

About halfway through the interview, King brought up the allegation against Bryant.

"It's been said that his legacy is complicated because of a sexual assault charge," King asked in the interview, published Tuesday. "Is it complicated for you as a woman, as a WNBA player?"

"It's not complicated for me at all," Leslie replied. "I just never have ever seen him being the kind of person that would do something to violate a woman or be aggressive in that way. That was just never the person that I know."

King had follow-up comments.

"But Lisa, you wouldn't see it, though," she said. "As his friend, you wouldn't see it."

"And that's possible," replied Leslie. "I just don't believe that."

King then asked if it's "even a fair question to talk about" the accusation, "considering he's no longer with us and that it was resolved," or if it is "really part of his history."

According to Leslie, the media "should be more respectful at this time."

Kobe Bryant death: Basketball icon's entertainment legacy was just beginning after Oscars win

"If you had questions about it, you've had many years to ask him that," she continued. "I don't think it's something that we should keep hanging over his legacy."

Bryant died on Jan. 26 in a helicopter crash along with eight others, including his 13-year-old daughter Gianna,. In heavy fog and with no radio connection to the controller, likely blocked by the mountains in low altitude, the helicopter crashed into a hillside in Calabasas, California.

King's line of questioning struck a chord on Twitter, with many criticizing the journalist as disrespectful.

Among King's critics was rapper 50 Cent.

"what is this, wait somebody gotta help me understand why they keep doing this," he wrote, along with a clip from the interview. "i apologize for my language in advance let’s talk about this."

over the clip, the rapper can be heard saying, "That's not complicated. You just said it was dismissed... Then how would you see it, Gayle? How the (expletive) would you see it, (expletive)?"

According to user @thehoracetowns, journalists "lack class."

"Gayle King and Oprah seem to go after certain stories without class, but ignore the stories involving their Hollywood friends," he wrote. "You bring up something about Kobe right after his death for ratings or relevance? Kobe Bryant has passed away"

User @CokeDir wrote that King "had MANY years to ask Kobe Bryant about the whole sexual assault case."

"Too soon for that (expletive)," he continued. "Let the legend Rest In Peace. Smh."

Kate Middleton and Prince William Pack on the PDA Amid Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Exit - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

The royal family may be going through one of its biggest upheavals in decades, yet Kate Middleton and Prince William are not letting the drama get to them. In a rare occurrence, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were spotted packing on the PDA at an engagement in South Wales. The appearance comes weeks after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their exit, a move that shocked the monarchy to its core.

The Cambridges put on a good show

The royals experienced a very rough start to 2020. At the beginning of January, Harry and Meghan formally announced their resignation as senior members of the royal family.

Moving forward, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are planning on becoming financially independent and are moving to Canada for a portion of the year. The announcement reportedly came as a surprise to the rest of the royals, who scrambled to get the situation under control.

Despite all the drama, Prince William and Kate Middleton have kept their composure in public. In fact, the two have shown little signs of stress and have even started to pack on the PDA like never before.

There is little doubt that Kate and William are dealing with some major issues behind the scenes, but they are definitely putting on a united front for the public.

Inside Prince William and Kate Middleton’s joint events

Last month, William and Kate appeared together for an event in Bradford. The Cambridges met with business owners in the region and potential job candidates.

Kate Middleton later attended a workshop as part of her Early Year initiative, where she learned more about projects that benefit families who have children that are under the age of five.

The Duchess of Cambridge later shared photos from the event on social media, which gained a lot of praise from fans around the world.

The two also attended the BAFTAs in London, where Prince William made jokes about how many actors have won awards playing members of the royal family. While it was great to see William and Kate perform their royal duties together, they really laid on the PDA during their most recent event.

According to Express, Kate poured on the PDA during a recent event in South Wales. The Duchess of Cambridge was spotted placing her hand on William’s shoulder during the engagement in what proved to be a rare show of affection for the couple.

The PDA happened when the two appeared at a Lifeboat Station at The Mumbles. The pair later boarded one of the lifeboats and spoke with crewmembers for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

Kate Middleton donned a red gown and a blue coat for the event and completed her look with a matching scarf and clutch.

Although the royals are experiencing a lot of drama at the moment, Prince William and Kate have clearly kept their cool in public. It is also interesting that they are showing more affection than ever before, as most members of the royal family tend to be much more reserved in public settings.

Brad Pitt takes a swipe at the royals

While Prince William and Kate Middleton continue to express their love for each other, their appearance at the BAFTAs was not without some controversy.

Brad Pitt was nominated for an award at the ceremony but was unable to attend due to previous commitments. In his stead, Margot Robbie accepted the award and gave a speech that Pitt wrote for the occasion.

In his acceptance speech, Pitt thanked everyone for their hard work and made a joke about the royals that made headlines the following morning. The jab was leveled at Harry and Meghan, who are currently living in Canada.

“He’s gonna name this [BAFTA] Harry, because he’s really excited about bringing it back to the States with him. His words, not mine, thanks!” Robbie shared.

William and Kate have not commented on Pitt’s dig. The cameras did, however, catch the couple’s reaction to Robbie’s speech. The two appeared to take the joke in stride and laughed alongside everyone else.

In light of Harry and Meghan’s exit, Prince William and Kate Middleton are expected to take on more royal duties in the coming years, which should give them plenty of opportunities to show a little more PDA.

Prince William and Kate Middleton Have Been 'Very Upset' About Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Exit - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

How are Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge adjusting in the wake of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry’s decision to exit the royal family? According to one insider, they’re “very upset” that the Sussexes have left and moved to Canada, but they appear to be pressing on with royal engagements and carrying on with their expected royal decorum.

Prince Harry and Meghan exit the family

Prince Harry and Meghan took an extended break over the holidays and returned with some big news — they wanted to leave their royal duties for good.

After Queen Elizabeth called a special meeting to hammer out the details of the Sussexes’ request, she released a statement showing her support for the couple.

The queen’s statement shared, in part: “I am pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family. I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life.”

The statement continued: “I want to thank them for all their dedicated work across this country, the Commonwealth and beyond, and am particularly proud of how Meghan has so quickly become one of the family. It is my whole family’s hope that today’s agreement allows them to start building a happy and peaceful new life.”

How have Prince William and Kate felt about Megxit?

Following Prince Harry and Meghan’s exit, royal fans have wondered how Prince William and Kate have been handling this huge upheaval in the family and whether they’ve had to take on more responsibilities in the Sussexes’ absence.

A palace source shared there was “genuine worry,” telling The Mirror: “Harry and Meghan deciding to up sticks and leave without any thought about how it could affect them is pretty selfish.”

“If the Sussexes are only here half the year then it will fall to William and Kate to pick up the slack with more engagements, more pressure, and that has not even been considered,” the source added.

The Cambridges are also reportedly “very upset” over the Sussexes’ move, with a source telling The Sun: “Understandably William and Kate have been very upset by what has happened. Not only has William lost his brother as a working member of the family but he and Kate now have a much greater burden.”

They’ve been leaning on Kate’s mom

It’s believed that, in this trying time for the Cambridges, they’ve been leaning on Kate’s mother, Carole, for some support.

Royal author Phil Dampier told Fabulous Digital: “Kate turns to [Carole] for advice and comfort all the time,” noting that the Cambridges have spent more time with Carole following Prince Harry and Meghan’s exit from their royal duties.

“There will be stressful times ahead and Kate and William will need the support of Carole and Michael more than ever,” Dampier added.

A look back at Kirk Douglas' biggest roles - Fox News

Kirk Douglas, the legendary actor and film pioneer, has died at the age of 103.

Douglas’ son, fellow actor Michael Douglas, shared a tribute to his father on Instagram on Wednesday. In it, he noted that Kirk "was a legend" and he's leaving "a legacy in film that will endure for generations to come."

Douglas garnered his first Oscar nomination in 1949 for his role in Mark Robson’s boxing drama “Champion” and followed that up with two more Oscar bids for his part in “The Bad and the Beautiful” in 1952. His performance in the flick also earned Douglas a Golden Globe award.

Though Douglas never won an Academy Award in his career, he was presented with an Honorary Oscar in 1996. Douglas was also awarded the AFI Lifetime Achievement prize in 1991, the Kennedy Center Honors in 1994 and the SAG lifetime achievement award in 1999.

Here’s a look at Douglas’ most famous roles.

1. Paths of Glory (1957)

Kirk Douglas in 'Paths of Glory' (1957).

Based on the novel by Humphrey Cobb and directed by Stanley Kubrick, “Paths of Glory” saw Douglas as a heroic Colonel in the French Army in WWI who put his foot down in refusing to follow through with a suicide mission much to the chagrin of his generals. Filmed in Germany, the antiwar flick tackled the psychological struggle and brutality of war.

2. Spartacus (1960)

While “Paths of Glory” marked Douglas’ first-ever foray into working with Kubrick, “Spartacus,” also based on a novel by Howard Fast, features Douglas in his most recognized role as a rebellious slave who leads an uprising against the Roman Republic. Though Douglas starred in and co-produced the film, he made sure to credit blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo. Peter Ustinov would win the Oscar for best supporting actor for his role in the film.

3. Champion (1949)

Kirk Douglas and Arthur Kennedy in 'Champion' (1949).

Mark Robson’s “Champion” was the film that landed Douglas his first-ever Oscar nomination. The intense boxing drama sees Douglas as Midge Kelly – a poverty-stricken kid with a penchant for punching who fights and claws his way to the top. Fans can credit “Champion” for ushering in a completely unique and refreshing style of filmmaking that helped in steering films such as “Rocky” and “Raging Bull.”

4. Seven Days in May (1964)

Helmed by John Frankenheimer and shaped by Douglas’ own production arm, Joel Productions, “Seven Days in May” is a stout political thriller. Acting opposite Burt Lancaster, Douglas’ character, Colonel “Jiggs” Casey is tasked with stymying a coup by Lancaster’s character, General James Scott, to overthrow the President of the United States.

5. Lust for Life (1956)

Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn in 'Lust for Life' (1956).

Channeling his inner Vincent Van Gogh for the part, Douglas proved himself to be more than a well-rounded performer in the film based on the biography from Irving Stone about the tragic life of the talented artist. Douglas worked with a familiar collaborator in Vincente Minnelli, who also directed “The Bold and the Beautiful” some four years prior, and brilliantly showcased his ability to encompass the troubled painter. For his role, Douglas would take home a coveted Golden Globe, however, he would lose out on the Oscar to Yul Brynner for “The King and I.”

6. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)

The Disney-backed live-action adaptation of Jules Verne’s science-fiction novel served as an opportunity for Douglas to experiment with a different type of role and step away from his comfort zone as a hardened performer and introduces a cheekier Douglas. The morality-laden film sees the legend as Ned Land, a sailor thrust into service aboard a vessel searching for an elusive sea creature. When the “monster” makes a surprise appearance, the crew are thrown overboard and said monster is discovered to be a revolutionary and ultramodern submarine helmed by the mysterious Captain Nemo, played by James Mason.

7. The Bad and the Beautiful (1952)

Kirk Douglas and Lana Turner in 'The Bad and The Beautiful' (1952).

Famous for stirring up controversy at the time for its portrayal of a merciless Hollywood movie producer, the Vincente Minnelli-directed melodrama is revered as one of the best films ever made. Lana Turner stars as actress Georgia Lorrison in the flick and Douglas adapts the string-pulling and aspiring Jonathan Shields, Hollywood producer. “The Bad and the Beautiful” stung the egos of many industry bigshots during its time and it currently reigns as the film with the most Oscar wins without a nomination for best picture – holding a respectable 5 wins.

8. Ace in the Hole (1951)

Kirk Douglas and Jan Sterling in 'Ace in The Hole' (1951).

Another film that likely struck a chord with media members at the time of its debut, “Ace in the Hole,” saw Douglas in one of his most vulnerable roles as the callous, binge-drinking reporter Chuck Tatum who had been all but dismissed from every large publication in the industry before landing at a small-town newspaper in Albuquerque, N.M. When a man finds himself trapped in a mine, Tatum relishes at the opportunity in front of him to land his next big story and Tatum soon finds out at what cost. The Billy Wilder media flick would mark the first time Wilder wrote, directed and produced his own project from the ground up. The film would also receive an Oscar nomination for its writing.

Meghan Markle, Prince Harry ‘are relieved’ to be living in Canada after Megxit, pal claims - Fox News

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are enjoying their new lives in Canada.

A far cry from their days at Buckingham Palace, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are spending their free time attending “casual and unannounced” engagements, as well as hiking in the woods near their Vancouver Island home with 9-month-old son Archie, People magazine reported on Wednesday.

“This decision [to leave] had been weighing on them for a long time, and they are relieved to have it done,” a friend of the couple told the outlet for this week’s issue. “A weight has been lifted off their shoulders.

The British royal and former American actress kicked off the New Year by announcing on Jan. 8 they were stepping back as senior royals and instead splitting their time between the U.K. and Canada.

But according to the outlet, their dreams of more freedom came with a price. The couple lost their ability to use their HRH (His/Her Royal Highness) titles and Harry, 35, had to forgo his role as youth ambassador to the Commonwealth, a move that he admitted has brought “great sadness.”

The outlet also noted that Harry, who served 10 years in the British army, including two tours of Afghanistan, was also stripped of his honorary military appointments.

“The military was part of his upbringing and his life,” said a palace insider. “He brought a lot to those guys and understood things. It is sad.”

Harry not only left behind his family and closest friends, but he and his wife, 37 had to negotiate “almost everything they asked for” with his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

But not all is lost, insisted the palace insider.

“Harry doesn’t care about the titles,” said the source. “It doesn’t interest him; it never has.”

As for Markle, the former “Suits” star is “deliberately keeping her circle tight” and strictly relying on her closest friends for support.

“She’s keeping a low profile while things settle down,” said an insider.

Still, the couple has quickly adapted to their new life on picturesque Vancouver Island where their new home is a $14 million mansion off the Pacific coast.

“They both love to be outside and have been loving it there,” claimed a friend. “They are enjoying living a quiet life. They go for long walks, they do yoga, and Meghan cooks. They are real homebodies who love to chill out with Archie and the dogs.”

However, pals claimed that Markle and Harry aren’t just sitting back and relaxing far away from the rest of the British royal family. They said the pair is actively working on “laying the groundwork” for their own charity foundation.

He’s a good guy. It’s full throttle for them right now. They have a lot happening in 2020, and it will be really exciting to see.”

Markle and Prince Harry’s bombshell announcement came just months after the pair opened up to host Tom Bradby in ITV’s documentary "Harry & Meghan: An African Journey,” which aired in October 2019 in both the U.K. and U.S.

While the special aimed to give audiences a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the couple’s recent royal tour of southern African, the couple also spoke out about enduring ruthless tabloid rumors as new parents.

“If things are fair, that completely tracks for me if things are fair,” Markle said. “If I do something wrong I’d be the first one to go, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry. I would never do that,’ but when people are saying things that are just untrue and they’re being told they’re untrue but they’re allowed to still say them, I don’t know anybody in the world who would feel that that’s OK. And that’s different than just scrutiny. That’s, what would you call that? That’s a different beast. It’s really a different beast.”

Jessica Simpson said she and her father Joe do not talk about his sexuality.

The reveal came amid the release of her new memoir Open Book, in which she says she was 'blindsided' when he left her mother Tina in 2012; and that he asked her if he could bring a male model to her wedding to Eric Johnson two years later.

The 39-year-old star, was asked about her 61-year-old father's sexuality by the Los Angeles Times Wednesday, and responded, 'That's not something we talk about. That's not my story to tell.'

In a passage from Open Book, the Dukes of Hazzard star opened up about a chat she had with her dad three days before her July 5 nuptials to the former NFL player, 40, at Montecito, California's San Ysidro Ranch.

'My father called me three days before we left for the wedding to tell me he was bringing his friend Jonathan, a young model he often shot for his new photography business,' the With You singer wrote. '"He wasn't on the list," I said. There was a pause.'

She continued: 'I reminded myself that I needed to accept my father for who he was as he worked it out in real-time.'

The Abilene, Texas native, who shares three kids with Johnson, 40 - daughters Maxwell Drew, seven, and Birdie Mae, 10 months; and son Ace, six - said that she was 'blindsided by' the news that Joe was leaving Tina in of 2012.

Jessica said that the news was more difficult to take as she was hospitalized amid her pregnancy with Maxwell when the news was revealed.

'They had been married for thirty four years, and I had a hard time being around them together since they'd stop loving each other,' Jessica wrote. 'I was blindsided by this news, which triggered his natural salesmanship. He pitched it to me as a positive thing, "You gave me the confidence … You gave me the way out."

'Great, I thought to myself, "I broke my own heart."'

She wrote that Joe 'moved on quickly,' speculating, maybe he'd planned it so long that he had a running start ahead of my mother.'

Joe has infrequently discussed his sexuality publicly: Sources told TMZ in November of 2012 that rumors that he was gay were 'ridiculous.'

In February of 2014, he took to Twitter amid stories linking him with a model named Jonathan Keith, who he was taking pictures of in Miami Beach, Florida.

Joe said that their relationship was one of business, writing, 'More mis-information in the news. The guy in the pics is my modeling Client. He was in Miami taking agency meetings. That's it!!'

Jessica said that her relationship with her father further deteriorated in 2012, when she stopped using him as her manager, but that they had 'a needed reconnection' four years later in 2016 amid his prostate cancer diagnosis.

She said she was 'most scared to show' Joe the book, but his reaction was a fatherly one.

Jessica said her dad told her, 'I wish I could have held you more in so many of those dark hours. Please forgive me for being a better manager than a father.'

She said she responded in saying that she 'told him he was the best father I could ever have had' and that she 'wouldn't change any moment' of her life.

'It's true,' she wrote in the memoir. 'I wouldn't change a single thing about my story, because I finally love who I am, and I can forgive who I was.'

Open Book is on sale now.
