Robert Conrad, star of 'The Wild, Wild West,' dies at 84 - Fox News

LOS ANGELES  — Robert Conrad, the rugged, contentious actor who starred in the hugely popular 1960s television series "Hawaiian Eye" and "The Wild, Wild West," died Saturday. He was 84.

The actor died of heart failure in Malibu, California, family spokesperson Jeff Ballard said. A small private service is planned for March 1, which would have been his 85th birthday.

“He lived a wonderfully long life and while the family is saddened by his passing, he will live forever in their hearts,” Ballard said.

With his good looks and strong physique, Conrad was a rising young actor when he was chosen for the lead in "Hawaiian Eye." He became an overnight star after the show debuted in 1959.

Conrad played Tom Lopaka, a daring private investigator whose partner was Tracy Steele, played by Anthony Eisley. They operated out of a fancy office overlooking the pool at a popular Waikiki hotel.

The two private eyes alternated on simple investigations with help from the island's colorful characters, including a singer named Cricket Blake (Connie Stevens) and a ukulele-strumming taxi driver named Kazuo (Poncie Ponce).

After five seasons with the show, Conrad went on to embrace the television craze of the time, period Westerns, but with a decidedly different twist.

In "The Wild, Wild West," which debuted in 1965, he was James T. West, a James Bond-like agent who used innovative tactics and futuristic gadgets (futuristic for the 1800s anyway) to battle bizarre villains. He was ably assisted by Ross Martin's Artemus Gordon, a master of disguise.

The show aired until 1970.

The series "Baa Baa Black Sheep" followed in 1976 and was roughly based on an autobiography by Marine Corps ace and Medal of Honor recipient Gregory "Pappy" Boyington, who wrote of the raucous fliers he commanded during World War II.

Conrad played Pappy Boyington, so nicknamed because he often rescued his pilots from severe punishment. Bringing his customary intensity to the role, he even learned to fly.

The CBS series was enjoyed by male viewers but not so much by women and it was dropped after its first season. It was revived in December 1977 as "Black Sheep Squadron," after the network's new shows failed to find audiences. It continued on for another season.

Conrad, meanwhile, interspersed his long, successful TV career with numerous roles in films. After a couple of small parts, his TV fame elevated him to stardom, starting in 1966 with "Young Dillinger," in which he played Pretty Boy Floyd. Other films included "Murph the Surf," "The Bandits" (which he also directed), "The Lady in Red" (this time as John Dillinger) and "Wrong Is Right."

At the same time, he found plenty of time for arguments.

Throughout Hollywood, Conrad had a reputation as a tough customer and was sued more than a half-dozen times as a result of fist fights. Playing himself in a 1999 episode of the TV series "Just Shoot Me," he lampooned his threatening, tough-guy persona. He was also featured in 1970s commercials for Eveready Batteries, with a battery on his shoulder, a menacing stare and a popular catchphrase, “I dare you to knock this off.”

"I'm only about 5-feet-8 and only weigh 165 pounds as of this morning, so I'm not the world's meanest guy," he told an interviewer in 2008.

"If you treat me nicely, I'll treat you nicer," he added. "If you're rude to me, put your headgear on. Here it comes."

His daughter Nancy Conrad, who appeared in some of his pictures, explained it this way: "Dad is a hard worker. If people drag their feet, he gets impatient. He starts ranting and raving. It takes a while to patiently take him aside and show him why things might not be going well."

He frequently employed his offspring in his movies and TV shows.

An example was the 1988 television series "High Mountain Rangers," which Conrad had proposed, bankrolled with his own money and directed. He hired sons Shane and Christian as co-stars, daughter Joan as producer and daughter Nancy as caterer. His first wife handled financial matters.

The show, about a group of law enforcement officers, was filmed in the High Sierra mountain range near Lake Tahoe.

Conrad's later film credits included 1996's "Jingle All The Way" with Arnold Schwarzenegger and 2002's "Dead Above Ground."

He was born Konrad Robert Falkowski in Chicago on March 1, 1935. His great-grandfather had emigrated from Germany, and his grandfather founded several meat shops in Chicago called Hartman's.

Conrad moved from one school to another, and at 15 he left his parents' house for a place known only to his girlfriend and his great-grandmother who sometimes fed him.

A football player in school, Conrad's first job was loading trucks. Then at 18 he was hired to drive milk wagons.

He tried boxing and nightclub singing for a time before drifting into acting and eventually moving to Hollywood, where he found work as a stuntman.

In lieu of flowers, Conrad’s family is requesting donations to the Wounded Warrior Project and The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation

Conrad is survived by eight children and 18 grandchildren.

Actor Robert Conrad, best known for 1960s and '70s television series "The Wild, Wild West," ""Baa Baa Black Sheep" and "Hawaiian Eye," died Saturday in Malibu, California, of heart failure, a spokesman for his family said. He was 84.

"He lived a wonderfully long life and while the family is saddened by his passing, he will live forever in their hearts," spokesman Jeff Ballard said in a statement.

Actor Robert Conrad died Saturday in Malibu, California, at age 84.

In 1965 he landed the lead role, that of Jim West, on CBS' "The Wild, Wild, West." The next decade he starred in "The D.A." and "Assignment: Vienna."

In 1978 he was nominated for a Golden Globe for his work on the NBC action series "Baa Baa Black Sheep." The previous year he won a People’s Choice Award for the role.

The disco era saw Conrad in TV commercials for Eveready, daring people to "knock this battery off my shoulder."

In the coming decades, he moved into directing movies and TV shows.

Born in Chicago on March 1, 1935, Conrad sang in a club at night while delivering milk during the day, according to Ballard. In 1958 he moved to Hollywood to pursue show business, he said.

Snoop Dogg says he didn't threaten Gayle King and wants 'no harm to come to her' - Page Six

Snoop Dogg isn’t looking for a fight with Gayle King.

The rapper, 48, took to Instagram Saturday to make that clear after calling out the CBS correspondent for mentioning late basketball star Kobe Bryant’s 2003 rape case.

“I’m a non-violent person,” Snoop says in the video. “When I said what I said, I spoke for the people who felt like Gayle was very disrespectful towards Kobe Bryant and his family.”

“Now with that being said,“ he continued, “what I look like wanting some harm to come to a 70-year-old woman? I was raised way better than that. I don’t want no harm to come to her and I didn’t threaten her, all I did was said, ‘check it out, you outta pocket for what you doing and we watching you. Have a little more respect for Vanessa, her babies and Kobe Bryant’s legacy.’”

He went on to stress that he’s “non-violent” while insisting he can only “speak from the heart.”

“Some of you who don’t have a heart wouldn’t understand that,” he quipped, ending the video.

Snoop’s original post emphatically condemned King, 65, for bringing up Bryant’s legal battle during her interview with WNBA star Lisa Leslie, calling her a “funky, dog-haired bitch” during the monologue. Oprah Winfrey later claimed that the viral interview clip led to King receiving death threats.

Adam Sandler Laughs Off All the ‘Motherf—-ers’ at the Oscars in Epic Spirit Awards Speech - Variety

Adam Sandler may have been snubbed by the Academy, but just like when he lost his high school yearbook superlative for “best looking” to some “feather-headed douchebag,” he’s taking it all in stride.

During his acceptance speech for best male lead at Saturday’s Independent Spirit Awards, the “Uncut Gems” star went full Sandman on stage, poking fun at everyone from directors Josh and Bennie Safdie to Netflix’s Ted Sarandos and producer Scott Rudin.

Read his full speech below:

Thank you, man, I know you guys all try to go quick and my speech is too long so I’ll try to breeze through it. And I love you. Just in case they cut me off, I love you to my wife and my kids and my family and I love you. Okay. I wrote a speech here we go, real quick. Hello my name is Adam Sandler.

Thank you. I stand before you trembling with glee as I receive your so-called best actor trophy independently speaking, of course.

First off, it’s great to see our host Aubrey Plaza again. Aubrey and I did a move entitled funny people 11 years ago. That was actually the last time critics pretended not to hate me for five f—ing minutes. Catch you in another 11 years, Aubrey.

I liked to also give a shout out to my fellow nominees, who will now and forever be known as the guys to lost to f—ing Adam Sandler. How did that happen? Independent movie Adam Sandler? To get my movie I had to live in my car outside of f—ing Ralph’s begging for nickels on f—ing Kickstarter, and all Sandler had to do was get Ted Sarandos stoned.

A few weeks back when I was “snubbed” by the Academy, it reminded me when I briefly attended high school and was overlooked for the coveted yearbook superlative category best looking. That accolade was given to a jean-jacket wearing, feather-haired douchebag by name the of Skipper Jenkins. But my classmates did honor me with the allegedly less-prestiges designation of best personality. And tonight as I look around this room, I realize the Independent Spirit Awards are the best personality awards of Hollywood.

So let all of those feather-haired douchebag motherf—-ers get their Oscars tomorrow night. Their handsome good looks will fade in time, while our independent personalities will shine on forever.

I’ve got more, I’m sorry, I got cruise through this. But in all seriousness, independent films have been a big part of the Adam Sandler ecosystem. From my first film,  a fearless look in the American education system through the eyes of a privileged sociopath by the name of Billy f—ing Madison, to my searing exploration of American college foosball and it’s manipulation of socially challenged athletes like the Mr. Bobby Boucher. I have tried to sell my truths with a truly independent spirit, while also cashing some truly disturbingly large paychecks.

Tonight is about “Uncut Gems,” I want to thanks some people first off, of course, the person who shared my life, my home, my laughter, my tears — Scott Rudin. Two years ago, Scott said the words that would forever change my life. “No, those aren’t homeless rabbis, those are the Safdie brothers.”

Honestly, I do want to say thank you to the Safdie brothers for believing in me and thinking of me for this part. I really had the best time getting to know you guys, I love you guys and I am glad we are tight now.

I want to say thank you to anybody who ever working on any of the comedies I did over the years. I love you, and I am glad we did all of that work together. And the Safdies and Noah and everybody liked our stuff enough to put me their stuff.

I truly I want to thank my kids for reading “Uncut Gems” and saying, “Dad, you gotta f—ing do this movie. Fantastic stuff.” And my wife, I love you. Thank for running lines with me and thanks for hanging out with me, and we had some fun on this one, so I love you. And thanks to everybody for this — a great night, I appreciate it.

Watch the full speech above.

Jennifer Lopez Slams Haters Claiming Super Bowl Performance Was 'Too Sexy' - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira had the big task of taking the stage at the Super Bowl 2020 during half-time. The Latin divas showcased their talents and everything that they learned during their decades-spanning careers. They both danced to their hit songs and delivered a powerful performance. Not only was it musical, but JLo and Shakira also sent out a political message to the current U.S. administration.

Lopez and Shakira also took a stand against the current U.S. administration and their immigration policy. The big celebration was breathtaking but there was a group of people that came out against the performance. There were loud voices that claimed the show was “too sexy” and not appropriate for a family-oriented event.

After a whole week of controversy, Lopez was questioned about the comments against her show during the Film Independent Spirit Awards red carpet.

“I think that’s honestly silliness,” Lopez told Variety of all the drama. “Both of us are really respectful performers who are moms and have kids and are very conscious of what we do.”

Jenny from the Block was seen on a dance pole during the half-time performance, something that many believed was inappropriate. Both Lopez and Shakira twerked and shook their booties to the rhythm of the music.

“We (put on) a show that I believe was a celebration of women and our Latino culture that I think was really well reserved. And that small faction of people who want to be negative about it, I can’t even let in,” she added.

The Bronx diva said that the show was a message to little girls and women who need to be proud of who they are.

“The message of standing up for yourself, being a woman – that’s what I want to pass on to little girls – everything about you – be proud of it,” she also said. “I’m very proud of the performance that night.”

JLo shares sweet video

The half-time Super Bowl performance quickly became the most-watched video on the NFL’s official YouTube channel. As of Saturday, February 8, the video has gotten over 112 million views. That count is only through the official channel, fans have been sharing moments from the performance which will blow over the previous number.

Following the live show, JLo shared a sweet video on her Instagram account with moments before she took the stage. Lopez’s daughter Emme also performed during the show, which made the moments that much sweeter.

“These moments were captured just minutes before we hit the stage last night,” Lopez shared. “All I want my girls, the little girls on stage with me and all over the world to know is how to use their voices and be proud of everything they are. We are proud to recognize that all of us together [is] what makes this beautiful country truly great.”

Lopez and Shakira shook the stage and made it one of the most memorable in recent history. Both stars made history on that stage representing Latinos and the rich culture that they bring to America that make it the great country it is.
