Birds of Prey is getting a new name, Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey - The Verge
Warner Bros. learned this past weekend that Birds of Prey, otherwise known as Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), isn’t exactly search engine optimization (SEO) friendly. The sequel of sorts to Suicide Squad barely made a dent in the box office due to many marketing issues involving the film, and, as a result, Warner Bros. has changed the name of the movie to Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey.
The title change appeared last night on ticket sites for major theaters. A Warner Bros. representative told The Verge that the name change is part of a “search expansion for ticket sites,” making it easier for people to find the movie. Adding Harley Quinn’s name to the beginning of the title also gives moviegoers a better understanding of what Birds of Prey is about, an issue the movie has faced in recent weeks.
Birds of Prey’s opening weekend wasn’t the success that Warner Bros. had planned for a movie about a popular DC character being portrayed by Margot Robbie. The film only generated $33 million domestically, coming up short against investors’ $50 to $55 million projection. The low box office return came as a surprise to industry insiders who noted that Birds of Prey was one of the best-reviewed DC movies in recent years, earning high scores on Rotten Tomatoes.
So what went wrong? One industry executive with knowledge of the matter referred to the rollout as a disaster. Like a domino effect, a few things went wrong at once: bad marketing, bad trailers, and bad title decisions.
A few trade publications have compared Birds of Prey’s rollout to Fox’s terrible marketing of the X-Men installment Dark Phoenix. Like Birds of Prey, Dark Phoenix didn’t have “X-Men” in it. And for people who might not be aware of Jean Grey’s character, Dark Phoenix looked like a random sci-fi movie, not the final chapter in an X-Men series. The poor marketing and heavy criticism the film received led to a major box office bomb, only generating $65 million domestically. Disney CEO Bob Iger even referenced the film’s box office failure in a call with investors, pointing to it as a reason the studio division of Disney’s company took a hit that quarter.
Harley Quinn is an extremely popular character with major name recognition, much like Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, and Joker. The decision to forgo using her name in the first place baffled industry members.
What’s unclear is how much of the lengthy title came from Warner Bros. and how much of it was a creative decision from director Cathy Yan. The studio has been criticized for swapping out names on directors in the past: director Doug Liman originally wanted to name his 2014 action movie starring Tom Cruise Live Die Repeat, but Warner Bros. went with Edge of Tomorrow instead. Much like Birds of Prey, the film was considered a financial disappointment despite the critical acclaim it received. Liman insisted part of the reason was the generic-sounding title Warner Bros. decided to go with. The marketing for the film eventually emphasized “Live Die Repeat” as a tagline.
It’s not just the title, though. A person with knowledge of the situation also noted that none of Birds of Prey’s trailers explained what the film was about. Instead of leaning into the R rating and releasing a series of redband trailers (like Deadpool and Amazon’s The Boys did), Birds of Prey’s trailers played it safe. Normally, that would be fine, but Birds of Prey is a movie that works because of its utter ridiculousness and R-rated qualities. To not show off that side of the film in the trailers and marketing leading up to its release is seen as a failure by many in the industry.
At the end of the day, Warner Bros. is trying to fix its rocky rollout with a new SEO game plan. There’s a good chance that Birds of Prey can find more success over the next few weeks: there’s little competition at the box office, and with Harley Quinn at the front of the new title, there’s a better chance people will know what Birds of Prey is about.

Academy Awards Round Up: All Of the Barriers That 'Parasite' Broke With Its 2020 Oscar Wins - Showbiz Cheat Sheet
“Hollywood” may be a catch-all term for the film industry, but at this point, few major films are actually made in Los Angeles (save for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood). The greater population is catching on that there is talent to be recognized globally, and Parasite is the most recent reminder of that. Here’s how the Oscar-winning film has done just that.
‘Parasite’ won big at the 2020 Academy Awards

Parasite, a South Korean thriller, sees a struggling family of four who manipulate a wealthy family into employing them all. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019, and quickly became a front-runner for the 2020 awards season, nominated for a total of six Oscars.
The film was considered a lock in the International Feature (formerly Foreign Language) Film category. But it was surprising that it took home three additional awards: Best Original Screenplay, Best Director for Bong Joon-ho, and the top prize: Best Picture.
It’s the first foreign language film to win Best Picture
So what exactly was historic about Parasite‘s wins? Well, for one thing, it’s the first foreign language film to win for Best Picture. Because of this, it is also the first to win both the Best Picture and now-renamed International Feature awards.
Additionally, Joon-Ho is only the second Asian director to win for Best Director, and the first of Korean descent. And he, along with co-writer Han Jin-won, are the first Asian winners in the Best Original Screenplay category.
The crowd yelled when they turned the lights down
Parasite‘s huge win at the end of the night came with thunderous applause and a very long standing ovation. Producer Kwak Sin-ae spoke first, saying, “I’m speechless. We never imagined this to ever happen. We are so happy. I feel like a very opportune moment in history is happening right now. I express my deepest gratitude and respect for all the members of the Academy for making this decision. Thank you.”
Then, something intriguing happened. The ceremony had already run 30 minutes past the time it was scheduled to end. So they turned the house lights down. But the audience was unhappy with this, and a chant erupted to turn the lights back up, allowing Miky Lee of distributor CJ Entertainment to give her speech.
‘Parasite’ is the first Korean film to win an Oscar
All of the above accomplishments are impressive. But what’s even more incredible is that Parasite is the first Korean film to win any Academy Awards, let alone to dominate is so many major categories.
With K-pop bigger than ever and other Korean entertainment on the rise, this kind of representation is so meaningful. As Joon-Ho himself said at the Golden Globes, “Once you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.”

‘Parasite’s Big Oscar Wins Set High Bar For HBO Series - Deadline
Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite on Sunday became the first foreign language film to win Oscar for Best Picture. The Korean import also became the first film to win Best Picture with a TV series adaptation already in the works.
At the onset of the awards season, when Parasite was a hot upstart but an Oscar Best Picture long shot, HBO landed a Parasite limited series. The in-demand Bong was heavily courted by streamers, including Netflix, which distributed his previous movie before Parasite, Okja. He chose to go with HBO, teaming up with Succession executive producer Adam McKay, who is under a first-look deal at HBO/HBO Max.
Bong and McKay, both Oscar winners, started discussing ideas about what the series would look like a few weeks ago, I hear. There has been chatter that Mark Ruffalo is being considered for a role. Any casting buzz is very premature as Bong and McKay are ways away from talking to actors, but Ruffalo did not deny that there may have been an overture. “I’d be honored to be able to play something” in the Parasite series, he told TMZ Monday.
Shortly after the Golden Globes, where Parasite won the Foreign-language film award, word of the series adaptation got out. Conventional Oscar campaigns have contenders keeping any pending TV projects under wraps until after the Academy Awards for fear of jeopardizing their chances. But television is no longer considered features’ inferior sibling. And Parasite is not your typical Oscar contender.
The TV series news did not hamper the film’s chances, and Parasite, distributed by indie NEON, walked away with four Oscars — all won or shared by Bong — best picture, director, writing and international picture.
There are only a couple of Best Picture Oscar-winning films that have spawn TV series, all done years after the movie had won the Academy Award. The very short list includes In the Heat of the Night and Crash. None has had the original creative minds behind the movie as deeply involved as Bong is in the HBO series. (Another of Bong’s movies, Snowpiercer, is being done as a TV series at TNT with other auspices.)
In interviews during the final phase of the Oscar campaign Bong explained that the series, likely six hours in length, will not be a straight remake of the film but will include a lot of additional material and stories he had developed for Parasite that could not fit into a two-hour movie.
Directed by Bong and written by Bong and Han Jin Won, Palme d’Or winner Parasite revolves around the members of a poor family who together scheme to work in a wealthy household by posing as unrelated, highly qualified help. The movie has become a global phenom, grossing $165M worldwide so far ($35.5M in the U.S.) with one of the most talked about movie endings in years.
The film’s awards season success has raised awareness and interest in the film, which is expanding its theater count following the Oscar sweep. The movie’s growing popularity also is increasing anticipation for the series and the pressure for it to live up to the high standard set by Bong’s big-screen marvel.
