SXSW disaster: Event admits it has no insurance for Coronavirus cancellation - Music Business Worldwide

It’s been a dreadful 24 hours for live promoters and festival owners.

First, late yesterday (March 6), South By Southwest, the annual US film, tech and music festival – due to take place in Austin, Texas next week – announced its 2020 cancellation due to concerns over the spread of Coronavirus.

Organisers of SXSW, which was set to open this year on Friday, March 13 and close nine days later, confirmed: “The City of Austin has cancelled the March dates for SXSW and SXSW EDU. SXSW will faithfully follow the City’s directions.

“We are devastated to share this news with you. ‘The show must go on’ is in our DNA, and this is the first time in 34 years that the March event will not take place. We are now working through the ramifications of this unprecedented situation.”

Since that announcement, an unfortunate event cancellation has snowballed into a potential business disaster, with ramifications far beyond SXSW itself.

The co-founder of SXSW, Nick Barbaro, is also the publisher of the event’s local newspaper, The Austin Chronicle. According to the Chronicle, Barbaro has confirmed that SXSW does not have cover for cancellation insurance relating to a disease outbreak.

“We have a lot of insurance (terrorism, injury, property destruction, weather). However, bacterial infections, communicable diseases, viruses and pandemics are not covered.”

Roland Swenson, SXSW

SXSW’s non-insured status for the cancellation is unaffected, says Barbaro, by the fact that the event’s closure was actually triggered by Austin city representatives declaring a “local state of disaster.”

SXSW co-founder and Managing Director, Roland Swenson, further confirmed in a text message: “We have a lot of insurance (terrorism, injury, property destruction, weather). However, bacterial infections, communicable diseases, viruses and pandemics are not covered.”

SXSW’s annual event in 2019 resulted in $356m being pumped into the local Austin economy.

SXSW isn’t the only large-scale US music event to make a COVID-19-related announcement in the past 24 hours, either.

The organisers of Winter Music Conference, which is part of Miami Music Week and has been held every March in Florida since 1985, has told speakers due to attend its scheduled 2020 event: “In light of the ongoing situation with the Coronavirus, we would ask you to put a pause on any travel plans for Winter Music Conference until further notice.

“We will be making an official comment in the coming days.”

As for SXSW, organisers continued in their statement yesterday: “We are exploring options to reschedule the event and are working to provide a virtual SXSW online experience as soon as possible for 2020 participants, starting with SXSW EDU.”

They added: “We understand the gravity of [this] situation for all the creatives who utilize SXSW to accelerate their careers; for the global businesses; and for Austin and the hundreds of small businesses – venues, theatres, vendors, production companies, service industry staff, and other partners that rely so heavily on the increased business that SXSW attracts.”

One company that, for obvious reasons, has been heavily affected by Coronavirus panic on the stock market is Live Nation Entertainment – the world’s biggest concert promoter, and owner (or co-owner) of music festivals such as Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo in the US, plus Reading & Leeds and Isle Of Wight Festival in the UK.

In the two weeks between the close of Friday, February 21 and the close of yesterday (Friday, March 6), Live Nation’s market cap value fell by over $4.5 billion ($15.92bn to $11.37bn) – a decline of 28.6%.

Speaking to investors on LNE’s Q4 earnings call last Thursday (February 27), the company’s CEO & President, Michael Rapino, downplayed the potential negative impact of Coronavirus on the global touring circuit.

“We don’t pay an artist until they play,” explained Rapino of concerts promoted by Live Nation. “If an artist says, ‘[We’re going to] cancel a show next month in Milan,’… there’s no cost incurred. When the artist replaces that show, then we pay the artist.”

“We don’t pay an artist until they play.”

Michael Rapino, Live NAtion (speaking last week)

Rapino reiterated that “rerouting and rescheduling a show” was considered “the easiest economic challenge… at no cost to us”.

However, when it came to the company’s own festivals, Rapino admitted there may be more fiscal pain to endure.

“The [situations] that always [bring] more challenges [are] when the festival gets canceled on the Saturday afternoon when 60,000 people are sitting there,” he said.

“That’s when you have some marketing and some sunk costs, where it may affect you.”

All eyes now are on Coachella, the Goldenvoice/AEG-run California music festival set to take place this year in April, headlined by the likes of Rage Against The Machine. Frank Ocean and Travis Scott.

Quibi launch lineup: everything to stream day one - The Verge

Quibi doesn’t have the same immediate brand recognition as Disney and HBO, or YouTube and Instagram, but the latest entrant in the war for people’s attention is preparing to jump into battle headfirst with its launch day slate.

There are 50 shows and movies to watch beginning on April 6th. 25 of those shows are “daily essentials,” referring to the regular series coming from a number of content partners including ESPN, Rotten Tomatoes, and the BBC. There are 19 “unscripted originals,” which refers to series like Chance the Rapper’s Punk’d reboot and Murder House Mystery, a series about flipping houses where a killing has taken place.

(Disclosure: Vox Media, which owns The Verge, has a deal with Quibi to produce a Polygon Daily Essential, and there have been early talks about a Verge show.)

The four titles that Quibi will want to draw your attention to, however, are “lighthouse” productions. These are movies in chapters; full-length films spliced into four to 10 minute chapters. Most Dangerous Game, When the Streetlights Go On, Survive, and Flipped star major Hollywood talent, making them among Quibi’s most premium content. These movies will receive new chapters every single day and can then be binged all at once whenever the movie is completed.

Below is a list of every daily essential, unscripted series, and movie subscribers will be available to watch on April 6th. Customers will receive a 90-day free trial. After that, subscribers can choose between a $4.99-a-month plan with ads, or an ad-free $7.99-a-month option.

'Grey's Anatomy' Fans Are Mourning the End of Alex and Meredith's Friendship More Than the End of Jolex - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Over the years, Grey’s Anatomy has won over the hearts of many fans around the world. The ongoing relationships, friendships, and even breakups keep everyone glued to the television to see what will transpire in every episode.

It is pretty safe to say that there have been so many plot twists and unexpected surprises, and some have gotten to us more so than others. One of the best friendships on the show, at least in the opinion of many fans, was the friendship of Alex and Meredith, and everyone hoped it would last forever.  After all,  the relationship evolved so much over the years that Meredith went so far as to call Alex her “person.”

It is unusual to find such a close friendship, with two people who can really connect, which is why the Alex and Meredith friendship storyline was such a fan favorite.

However, the world was stunned when Justin Chambers unexpectedly announced his departure from the hit show, and instantly, everyone began to speculate as to how he would leave. Here is why Grey’s Anatomy fans are mourning the end of Alex and Meredith’s friendship more than the end of “Jolex”.

The history of Alex and Meredith’s friendship

They had a friendship that was one of a kind, but how did it start? According to the Tylt, they actually didn’t start off on the right foot! Meredith didn’t care for Alex much when she first met him, and obviously, her feelings changed as the show and the storyline progressed.

The two, although they are just friends, have always stuck by each other, especially when things got tough, which happened pretty often. There have been relationship struggles, deaths, and even tragic accidents, and Alex and Meredith’s friendship has always been able to remain as strong as possible. With such a close bond, many fans actually wondered if it would ever turn into more.

Fans had no idea what would happen

When it was revealed that Chambers would be leaving Grey’s Anatomy after so many years, fans were left wondering how his character would be written off the show. TV Insider reports that so many viewers were just not ready to say goodbye to Alex just yet, and they didn’t hesitate to show their disappointment.

It almost seems as if the show will never be the same now that Chambers is no longer a part of it, and the fact that he is leaving has broken the hearts of millions. It is truly a sad time now that we are seeing not only the end of the friendship between Alex and Meredith, but also between Alex and his wife, Jo.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ fans are mourning

Alex’s departure from the show has left many people not only upset but with mixed feelings as well. How so?

Well, as it turns out, Grey’s Anatomy fans are actually mourning the end of Alex and Meredith’s friendship even more than the end of “Jolex” according to Reddit. Many fans feel that the friendship of Meredith and Alex was the only one on the show that remained solid over the course of so many years.

We have seen friendships and relationships come and go so quickly at times, but Alex and Meredith had a bond that seemed unbreakable. No matter what they ever experienced together, everyone was always rooting for them, and it was like they were truly each other’s rock.

While it is always sad to see a romantic relationship end, sometimes it is even more difficult to absorb the shock of seeing the end of a friendship, and that is exactly what fans of the show are being faced with.

Harvey Weinstein moved to NYC jail after heart procedure - The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Harvey Weinstein was moved Thursday to an infirmary unit at New York City’s notorious Rikers Island jail complex after undergoing a heart procedure at the hospital where he’d been held since his conviction last month on rape and sexual assault charges.

Weinstein’s spokesman, Juda Engelmayer, said that the former film producer’s procedure Wednesday at Bellevue Hospital was “deemed successful,” but Engelmayer wouldn’t go into further detail. Weinstein was taken by ambulance to the North Infirmary Command on Rikers Island after doctors at the hospital deemed him fit enough to be moved there.

Weinstein, 67, was originally supposed to go to Rikers Island immediately after his Feb. 24 conviction, but he was detoured to Bellevue Hospital amid concerns about high blood pressure and heart palpitations. He was at the hospital for more than a week.

Weinstein’s lawyer Arthur Aidala, who saw him at the hospital Thursday morning, said his client is “obviously not the picture of health.”

In addition to the heart issues, Weinstein’s lawyers have said he was also dealing with the ramifications of unsuccessful back surgery stemming from a car crash last summer and a condition that requires shots in his eyes so he does not go blind.

Weinstein used a walker to aid his movement in and out of the courthouse.

“He’s obviously not happy where he is. But he’s lucid and realistic about everything. He’s still in a state of disbelief,” Aidala said.

Weinstein is due back in court Wednesday for sentencing. He was convicted on one count of criminal sex act for forcibly performing oral sex on a woman in 2006 and one count of third-degree rape for a 2013 attack on another woman.

On the criminal sex act count, he faces a minimum of five years in prison and a maximum of 25 years in prison, while the third-degree rape count carries a maximum penalty of four years in prison. The judge could have the sentences run concurrently.

Weinstein was acquitted of predatory sexual assault charges that carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.

After revoking Weinstein’s bail when he was convicted, Judge James Burke made a judicial request to place him in the North Infirmary Command. There, the judge said, he’d have “something tantamount to protective custody.”

Martin Horn, a former city corrections commissioner, said that despite its name, the infirmary is more like a regular jail than a hospital unit.

Built in 1932 as the original Rikers Island Hospital, the infirmary now has smaller, 10-cell blocks that are used for protective units for inmates who might be targets in general population, such as sex offenders and former law enforcement officers.

Horn said the city’s jails have specialized units for the disabled but inmates with serious medical needs are often sent to the hospital ward at Bellevue.

A plan approved last year calls for closing the Rikers Island complex by 2026 and replacing it with four smaller jails around the city. Rikers has become synonymous with violence and neglect, while the new jails are intended to be more modern and humane.
