Harry and Meghan in last public engagement as working royals - BBC News

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are due to make their final public appearance as working members of the Royal Family.

Prince Harry and Meghan will join the Queen and other royals at the Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey on Monday afternoon.

The couple have been carrying out a series of public appearances in the UK before stepping back as working royals.

From 31 March, they will stop using their HRH titles and receiving public money.

The duke and duchess will gather with the Queen - who is head of the Commonwealth - the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in the central London cathedral.

It will be the first time the couple have appeared with other members of the Royal Family since announcing their intention to "step back" as senior royals in January.

After the service, they are expected to return to their current base in Canada, where their son, Archie, has remained during the UK trip.

It is where the couple are to begin their new life of personal independence, pursuing private commercial deals and charity projects.

Prince Harry and Meghan will retain use of Frogmore Cottage, in Windsor, and aides have said they will be in the UK regularly.

They will still attend some royal events but these will not be classed as official duties.

The new arrangements will be reviewed next year.

The duke and duchess have conducted a farewell tour of the UK with several appearances including the Endeavour Fund Awards and a military musical festival at the Royal Albert Hall.

Meghan made a surprise visit to a school in Dagenham, east London, to celebrate International Women's Day.

Meanwhile, the duke joined Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton to visit a new motor racing museum at the Silverstone Circuit.

The couple have made supporting the Commonwealth a priority for their royal duties and overseas visits.

In stepping down as working royals, the duke will relinquish his role as Commonwealth Youth Ambassador.

But Harry will remain president of the Queen's Commonwealth Trust and Meghan will still be the Trust's vice-president.

In her Commonwealth Day message, the Queen has praised the diversity of the family of nations whose blend of traditions "serves to make us stronger".

Heavyweight boxing champion and Olympic gold medallist Anthony Joshua will deliver a reflection at the service, while singers Alexandra Burke and Craig David will perform.

The Duke of York will be absent from this year's service, having resigned from royal duties following criticism of his BBC Newsnight interview over his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The Commonwealth Day service will be broadcast live on BBC One from 14:15 GMT and across the BBC World Service.

Why Meghan Markle Feels 'Picked On' By Queen Elizabeth - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Before her marriage to Prince Harry, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex said she knew royal life wouldn’t be easy. However, there is nothing that could have actually prepared her for exactly how difficult it really was. As if her ongoing family drama wasn’t bad enough, Meghan also had to deal with relentless criticism from the British tabloids, and it was worse than she ever imagined it would be.

Almost every move that she made was scrutinized, and everyone seemed ready and willing to voice their opinion about Meghan, her life, and her marriage to Prince Harry. In fact, it was more than Meghan and Prince Harry were able to handle, and as we all know, they recently made the astonishing decision to step back as senior royals in favor of a quieter, more private life.

Usually, when someone is in the public eye and they are going through such a difficult time, they can always count on the support of their family to get through it. Yet, for Meghan and Prince Harry, it is the opposite. The royals are disappointed, and they are also extremely stressed. Let’s talk about why Meghan feels “picked on” by Queen Elizabeth.

What we know about Meghan and Harry’s resignation as senior royals

Meghan and Prince Harry’s resignation — dubbed “Megxit” — has been dominating headlines for weeks. There is speculation that the couple, who have already made it well-known that they plan to be “financially independent,” will make millions, if not billions of dollars once the split is finalized.

Once the springtime rolls around, CNN reports that some major changes will be taking place. Meghan and Prince Harry will no longer be able to use their “HRH” titles, and they will not be carrying out royal duties on behalf of the queen.

According to MarketWatch, the couple will no longer be full-time residents of Great Britain, as they take the opportunity for a more laid back lifestyle with their young son, Archie Harrison.

How did the royal family react?

It is no secret that Meghan and Prince Harry have millions of fans all over the world. When the news of Megxit broke, everyone went into a state of shock.

However, fans were not the only ones who were left speechless. As it turns out, the other senior royals — such as Prince Charles and Prince William, and especially Queen Elizabeth — were saddened by Meghan and Prince Harry’s decision. Insider reports that it caused a bit of tension.

Although the queen released a statement supporting her grandson and his wife, she did go so far as to admit that she wished they would have remained as working members of the royal family. Prince Harry’s father, Prince Charles, and his brother, Prince William, worked tirelessly for weeks to work out the details of the split. There is no doubt that there was a bit of stress behind palace doors.

Why Meghan feels ‘picked on’ by Queen Elizabeth

It is almost time for Megxit to become official, but Meghan and Prince Harry seem to still be dealing with the effects. So, how does Meghan feel “picked on” by her grandmother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth?

Apparently, she feels that the restrictions being placed upon herself and Prince Harry are not only unfair but that they are also “payback” for their decision to resign. According to the Daily Mail, she is not happy about things such as the fact that the couple is no longer permitted to use the word “royal” in their branding.

Meghan also feels that the restrictions are not necessary and that she and Prince Harry are being treated differently than the rest of the royals, going so far as to say that her majesty is “picking” on them.

That said, it’s not all drama and hurt feelings. Prince Harry and Meghan are currently in the U.K. wrapping up their royal obligations. Queen Elizabeth reportedly invited the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to join her for a Windsor church service.

Meghan Markle, Prince Harry arrive at church to meet Queen Elizabeth - Page Six

A beaming Meghan Markle smiled on her way to church on Sunday — her first time seeing Queen Elizabeth II since announcing Megxit.

The Duchess of Sussex, wearing a fascinator-style headpiece, looked happy and relaxed as her more-serious looking husband, Prince Harry, 35, drove her to The Royal Chapel of All Saints in Windsor.

They were met by the Queen, who has not seen Markle, 38, since the Sussexes’ bombshell announcement in January that they were quitting the royals, according to The Sun.

“It was a really sweet gesture that the Queen asked them to church,” a source told People magazine.

The invite was the 93-year-old monarch’s way of proving her earlier claim that her grandson and his wife “will always be much loved members” of the Queen’s family, the source said.

“It’s telling in the sense that these two are still her family. And as a family, they all love each other,” the source told People.

Harry, however, has seen his grandmother a number of times since making the announcement — including a historic summit to discuss the terms, as well as a recent four-hour lunch where she reportedly told him they will always be welcomed back.

The couple will join even more senior royals on Monday, where they are due to appear alongside the Queen as well as Harry’s father, Prince Charles, and brother, Prince William, at the Commonwealth Day service in Westminster Abbey.

It will be their first time with the almost all of the royal family since Megxit — and their final official engagement before officially becoming commoners on April 1.

One member of the family will be missing, however: Prince Andrew, whose scandalous ties to late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein saw him dumped from royal duties last year.

Meghan and Harry Reunite With Queen at Church Amid Royal Exit - E! NEWS

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry joined his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II at a church service on Sunday, marking the first public reunion between the Duchess of Sussex and the British monarch since the couple moved to Canada late last year ahead of a planned official exit from the royal family.

The Duke of Sussex was photographed driving his wife to the Royal Chapel of All Saints in Windsor Great Park, while the queen, 93, was seen being driven to the venue in a different vehicle. Meghan, 38, and Harry, 35, had last week returned to the U.K. for what local media has called their "farewell tour," during which they will make their last public appearances as "senior" royals before their royal exit takes effect on March 30.

The two had spent the holidays with their now-10-month-old son Archie Harrison in Canada, where the duchess and American former actress used to live and film the show Suits. The baby has remained there for months, staying with close friends. Meghan made one quick visit with Harry to the U.K. in January before returning to Canada. Shortly thereafter, she and Harry made a unilateral announcement that they would "step back as 'senior' members of the royal Family" and also wanted to "balance" their time between the U.K. and North America.

Following discussions with Harry, his older brother Prince William and their father Prince Charles, the first in line to the throne, the queen approved an amended royal exit plan for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. More changes, such as a ban on using the word "royal" from their branding, were announced last month.

Last week, Harry met with the queen for a private "grandson-to-granny talk," during which she told him he would always be welcome back as a working royal, according to multiple reports. In recent days, he and Meghan made public appearances at the Endeavor Fund Awards and the Mountbatten Festival of Music celebrating military bands, which is believed to be his last event as Captain General of the Royal Marines.

On Monday, Meghan and Harry will again see the queen, and also reunite with William and wife Kate Middleton, at the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey, which will mark the Sussex's last official engagement as senior royals.

Box Office: 'Onward' Opens to Muted $40M, 'The Way Back' Stalls at $8.5M - Hollywood Reporter

Box office analysts say it's unclear how much of an impact worries over the coronavirus had on moviegoing this weekend.

Family animated offering Onward opened to a muted $40 million from 4,310 theaters in North America, one of the lowest nationwide starts for the storied Pixar brand.

It's unclear how much of an effect worries over the coronavirus had on moviegoing in the U.S. this weekend, or whether Onward faced its own challenges. Comparisons to last year — when Captain Marvel opened to $153 million — were always going to be brutal. Overall, revenue for the weekend was down more than 50 percent from the same frame in 2019.

The impact of COVID-19 is clearly being felt overseas, where cinemas are closed in China and box office revenue is compromised in markets including South Korea, Italy and Japan. Onward came in well behind projections with an underwhelming $28 million from its first 47 territories for a global bow of $68 million. The movie did not open in any of the countries most impacted by the coronoavirus.

While the movie received strong reviews and an 86 percent "fresh" score on Rotten Tomatoes, it had only been tracking for a domestic launch in the $40 million to $45 million range even before the virus became a global concern.

Onward, earning an A- CinemaScore, follows two teenage elf brothers (Chris Pratt and Tom Holland) who embark on a quest to discover if there is still magic out there, and if they can use it to bring back their late father. Dan Scanlon, who directed Monsters University, is behind the film and wrote the movie with Jason Headley and Keith Bunin.

Pixar's lowest nationwide openings include 1995's Toy Story, its first release, ($29.1 million), 2015's The Good Dinosaur ($39.2 million) and 1998's A Bug's Life, which first opened in one or two theaters before breaking wide over Thanksgiving with a three-day gross of $33.3 million and roughly $40 million for the long holiday weekend.

Universal and Blumhouse's The Invisible Man fell to No. 2 in its second weekend, declining a relatively narrow 46 percent to $15.2 million from 3,610 locations for a 10-day domestic tally of $52.9 million. Overseas, it grossed another $17.3 million from 65 markets for a foreign haul of $45.6 million and $98.3 million globally.

Warner Bros.' adult drama The Way Back, starring Ben Affleck, opened to $8.5 million from 2,020 theaters. While that's a sobering start for a movie boasting A-list talent and billed as a comeback for Affleck, it could have been worse. Some tracking services had the film opening to as low as $6 million (the high end was $10 million). The Way Back is the latest in a string of midrange misses for Warner Bros., and cost a reported $21 million to produce before marketing.

In recent years, Affleck's box office track record has been decidedly mixed. In 2016, The Accountant debuted domestically to $24.7 million, while Live by Night, released that same year, opened to just just $5.1 million after first playing in select theaters. In 2013, Runner Runner debuted to $7.7 million domestically.

Directed by Gavin O'Connor, The Way Back follows a former basketball star (Affleck) struggling with the loss of his wife and addiction as he attempts to make a comeback by becoming the coach of his alma mater's high school basketball team. The film, which skewed notably older and male, received strong reviews but a B+ CinemaScore from audiences.

Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog placed fourth in its third outing as it speeds toward the $300 million mark globally, grossing $8 million domestically from 3,717 cinemas for a domestic tally of $140.8 million. Sonic has now earned $154.8 million overseas for a worldwide cume of $295.6 million

20th Century/Disney's The Call of the Wild rounded out the top five with an estimated $7 million from 3,914 locations for a North American total of $57.5 million and $99.6 million globally.

Elsewhere, Focus Features and Working Title's period pic Emma expanded nationwide in its third weekend, grossing $5 million from 1,565 theaters for a domestic tally of $6.9 million. Emma placed sixth in the U.S.

Sony celebrated Bad Boys for Life crossing $200 million in the U.S. upon earning another $3 million for a domestic haul of $202 million and $415 million globally.

At the specialty box office, A24's First Cow, from filmmaker Kelly Reichardt, posted an opening location average of $24,105 from four theaters in New York and Los Angeles, the best average of the weekend.

[VIDEO] 'SNL' Recap: Daniel Craig Hosts — Best and Worst Sketches - TVLine

What do Elizabeth Warren, Debbie Downer and James Bond have in common? They all popped up in some of Saturday Night Live‘s most memorable sketches this weekend — some for better… and some for worse.

It was Bond himself, Daniel Craig, who presided over Season 45’s 15th installment, and proved to be a capable, if not spectacular host who was better suited for digital shorts than he was for live sketches. The episode delivered multiple coronavirus-themed skits, but far fewer laughs than John Mulaney’s week-ago hosting stint.

snl elizabeth warren kate mckinnon videoBEST: THE INGRAHAM ANGLE CORONAVIRUS COLD OPEN
Seeing Sen. Warren come face to face with SNL portrayer Kate McKinnon was easily the highlight of the night. And Warren’s crack at the expense of fellow former Democratic presidential hopeful Michael Bloomberg — “Not only did I not accept money from billionaires, I got to give one a swirly on live TV!” she exclaimed — was priceless. But even before she arrived on screen, it was one of the stronger politically tinged cold opens as of late, thanks in part to Darrell Hammond’s return as MSNBC retiree(-turned-Fox News hire?) Chris Matthews, and Cecily Strong’s uncanny impression of Jeanine Pirro. (Watch it here.)

BEST: SALAD
Aidy Bryant was equal parts “1950s housewife” and “Rachel Green making a traditional English trifle” in this bizarro short about a homemaker and one particularly revolting recipe for overnight salad. Craig was put to best use here in the role of Bryant’s fed-up husband, who scolded her for feeding their two children (and the poor family dog) such dreck.

BEST: THE SANDS OF MODESTO
This COVID-19-themed soap opera satire won me over with its many sight gags, including stock footage of two people shaking hands, and Craig covering McKinnon with Saran Wrap before getting hot and heavy.

BEST: GIRL YOU WISH YOU HADN’T STARTED A CONVERSATION WITH AT A PARTY
Who better to provide commentary on the “QDOBA Virus” than Strong’s dimwitted (and slightly tipsy) Weekend Update character? “It’s been blown so out of abortion,” she deadpanned, before giving her two cents on the race for the Democratic nomination for president. “This whole thing is ribbed for no one’s pleasure… It’s like, everyone wants socialism now, but how did that work out for Vuvuzela?”

HONORABLE MENTION: ON THE COUCH
Kenan Thompson and Chris Redd were joined by musical guest The Weeknd for their latest music video collaboration, which took a bit too long to reveal the real reason why each of them were forced to sleep on the couch, rather than in bed with their lovers.

WORST: DEBBIE DOWNER WEDDING RECEPTION
Debbie Downer’s trip to Disney World was one of the funniest SNL sketches of the early aughts, in large part because everyone, including Rachel Dratch, was unable to hold it together. Unfortunately, this surprise revival — like so many recent TV revivals — was a total dud. The timing was off, and the jokes were forced. If not the worst sketch of the night, it was certainly the most disappointing.

What were your favorite sketches this week? And what missed the mark? Watch all of the highlights (and lowlights) above, then grade the episode in our poll.
