Harvey Weinstein Sentenced to 23 Years in Prison - Variety

Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 23 years in a New York State prison on charges of sexual assault and third-degree rape. He will be formally registered as a sex offender. It’s the culmination of a stunning fall for a man who was one of the most influential and powerful figures in Hollywood.

Before the sentencing was delivered, Weinstein addressed a packed Manhattan courtroom and said he had “deep remorse.” But he showed little contrition. In a rambling speech he also pushed back at the #MeToo movement, implying that it had gone too far, while talking up his charity work.

“I am totally confused,” he said. “I think men are confused about all of this…this feeling of thousands of men and women who are losing due process, I’m worried about this country.”

“This is not the right atmosphere in the United States of America,” Weinstein added.

Weinstein said he had “serious friendships” with the two primary accusers in the case, Miriam Haley and Jessica Mann. Both women delivered “victim impact” statements before Burke issued the sentence. Haley, who says she was sexually assaulted by Weinstein in his apartment in 2006, told the judge that she was left emotionally damaged by the incident.

“It scarred me deeply, mentally and emotionally,” she added. “What he did not only stripped me of my dignity as a human being and a woman, but it crushed my confidence.”

Mann, who testified that Weinstein raped her over the course of an abusive relationship, said his abuse had also had a negative impact on her life.

“I don’t know how to explain the horrors of being raped by someone who has power,” Mann added. “The impact on the psyche is profound. Rape is not just one moment…it is forever.”

As Mann and Haley spoked, Weinstein looked on, appearing to be in a state of stunned disbelief. Afterwards, he apologized to both women.

Weinstein was wheeled into court in a wheelchair, where prosecutors urged Justice James Burke to give him the “maximum sentence” of 29 years. His attorneys urged Justice James Burke on Monday to sentence him to the minimum, five years, citing his poor health and advanced age.
Weinstein’s attorney Donna Rotunno pushed back at Mann and Haley’s characterization of the former mogul as an all-powerful figure. His wealth and celebrity, she implied, had actually hurt his case.

“You have this idea that having fame and fortune and money at his fingertips is positive,” said Rotunno. “But in many ways, having that life and have every single move that you make be scrutinized by the media…shows that there is a pressure that goes along with that lifestyle that is probably not something that everybody would want.”

She went on to argue that Weinstein’s role in bringing award-winning hits such as “Shakespeare in Love” and “The English Patient” to the screen had made him a target.

“He built careers, and because he’s known as someone who did that, everyone wanted a piece of him,” said Rotunno, who noted that Weinstein was responsible for “80-plus Oscars.”

“That is not a small feat,” she said.

In a press conference after the sentencing was delivered, Rotunno said that Weinstein’s punishment was “obscene.”

Haley and Mann were sitting in the front row of the court room for the sentencing, flanked by Tarale Wulff, Dawn Dunning, Lauren Young, and Annabella Sciorra, all of whom testified in the trial about Weinstein’s assaults. Mann used her address to respond to suggestions by Weinstein’s legal team that the fact that she remained in touch with the producer after the alleged rape.

“As his lawyers twist the truth, and even lie, I swore to come here and tell the whole truth, only to be asked yes or no questions,” Mann said. “There is still so much left unsaid about his abusive relationships.”

“I wish I had been able to fight him,” said Mann. “I want to remind you I told Harvey ‘no’…I thought I would be able to assert my no and reserve the right to my autonomy.”

In court, Assistant D.A. Joan Illuzzi argued that Weinstein’s conviction demonstrated that his money and influence were not able to subvert the justice system.

“Every argument that could’ve been made on his behalf was made, and the system worked,” she said.

Illuzzi also praised Haley and Mann for coming forward with their allegations.

“The defendant would never have been stopped from hurting and destroying more lives,” she said. “Every one of these women represents the strength and fortitude of every moral person who stands up and says, ‘Enough.’”

Last Friday, Illuzzi asked the judge to send a message that sexual assault is “a serious offense worthy of a lengthy prison sentence.” She also asked Burke to consider 36 uncharged allegations, including rape, harassment, bullying, and workplace violence, in handing down the sentence. In court, she pressed Justice Burke to give Weinstein the maximum sentence.

“[Weinstein] made movies,” she said. “He got to go to parties…he walked the red carpet and mingled with all the stars…and he held the dreams of many people in his hands…and how did he use that power? He got drunk off that power.”

Weinstein has been held since last Thursday at Rikers Island, but will soon be turned over to the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

Weinstein’s fall led to an industry-wide reckoning in the entertainment business. It was one that saw other high-profile Hollywood figures such as Les Moonves, Kevin Spacey, Charlie Rose, Brett Ratner, and Bryan Singer accused of sexual misconduct. The allegations against Weinstein were far more expansive than the criminal charges he faced. He was accused of assault and harassment by dozens of women. On Wednesday, the Silence Breakers, a group of Weinstein accusers that includes actresses Ashley Judd, Rose McGowan, and Rosanna Arquette, said that it would continue to push for cultural change.

Harvey Weinstein’s legacy will always be that he’s a convicted rapist,” the group said in a statement. “He is going to jail – but no amount of jail time will repair the lives he ruined, the careers he destroyed, or the damage he has caused.”

Coachella is postponed. The latest on refunds, Airbnb response - Los Angeles Times

On Tuesday, concert promoter Goldenvoice announced that the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is being postponed due to the growing threat of coronavirus.

Coachella was expected to draw 250,000 fans over the weekends of April 10 and 17 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio. The multiday concerts will be held instead on the weekends of Oct. 9 and 16. The dates for Stagecoach, Coachella’s country music counterpart also held at the Empire Polo Club, are being moved from April 24-26 to Oct. 23-25.

“All purchases for the April dates will be honored for the rescheduled October dates,” Goldenvoice said in its announcement. “Purchasers will be notified by Friday, March 13, on how to obtain a refund if they are unable to attend.”

But for attendees whose plans to attend to the concert included flights or lodging arrangements, changes or cancellations could become complicated.

Airbnb recommends that guests speak with their host to see if they are willing to alter the reservation to take place at a later date since the event has been postponed. Any cancellations would be determined by the host’s cancellation policy.

The move follows Riverside County declaring a public health emergency after confirming its first case of coronavirus this week. The current total of COVID-19 cases in the county is six.

Some airlines and hotels have begun waiving fees for changes and cancellations in some situations in response to the outbreak. Marriott and Wyndham are among hotel chains waiving fees for guests traveling to and from certain locations for stays through March 30.

Airbnb has also recently expended its extenuating circumstances policy to include some cancellations as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

Guests who are traveling to or from certain “severely impacted areas” — including mainland China, Italy and South Korea — could qualify for a full refund under the policy if reservations were made by a certain date (varies by location) for a check-in of April 1 or earlier.

Airbnb’s website also states that with documentation, the extenuating circumstances policy could also apply to cancellations made in order to comply with restrictions implemented by relevant authorities or if transportation has been canceled because of the outbreak. Anybody diagnosed with or suspected of having COVID-19 can also get a refund.

However, those seeking to cancel their Airbnb reservations because of the cancellation of SXSW have reportedly been told that their situation is not covered under the extenuating circumstances policy and that refunds would be issued only if travel restrictions were in place.

Harvey Weinstein asked Michael Bloomberg, Jeff Bezos for help keeping his job: report - Fox News

Harvey Weinstein reached out to billionaires and Hollywood A-listers for help just days after bombshell reports brought his pattern of sexual assault and misconduct to light, according to newly unsealed court documents.

The documents contain emails written by Weinstein to people like Michael Bloomberg, Jeff Bezos, Ted Sarandos and Tim Cook. Many are dated Oct. 8, 2017, just days after a pair of bombshell reports detailed the 67-year-old convicted rapist’s pattern of using his power and status to allegedly assault multiple women.

Weinstein has maintained that all sexual encounters were consensual. However, he was convicted of rape and sexual assault by a New York City jury in February.

According to court documents obtained by Page Six, Weinstein sent frantic emails imploring the billionaires and high-status Hollywood executives to send letters to the board of The Weinstein Co. The now-disgraced movie mogul hoped that they could convince the board not to fire him and instead let him go into counseling and therapy, leaving the door open to a potential comeback.

“All I’m asking for is, let me take a leave of absence and get into heavy therapy and counseling, whether it be in a facility or someplace else, and allow me to resurrect myself with a second chance,” the documents reportedly read.

“If you could write this letter backing me getting the help and time away I need and also stating your opposition to the board firing me, it would help me a lot — I’m desperate for your help,” he added.

In a letter to Cook, CEO of Apple, Variety reports Weinstein was already planning for his own reinstatement.

“I don’t need you to make any public statements — just a private one to my gmail address, saying that you support me getting therapy and the help I need before the board fires me,” the email reportedly reads. “I’m in a tough spot. Many of the allegations are false, but I need your help with this private letter of support. I’m going to get well, and if I pass the therapist test, then we can talk about reinstatement et cetera. But for now, I’m going to take a leave of absence and get healthy. If they fire me now, it’ll destroy me personally and cause a huge legal battle, based on my rights with the company. But if I have support from someone like you getting me going into treatment and having the shot at a second chance (because people deserve a second chance), it would be very helpful. I would need something today if you can — I so appreciate it.”

The emails were mostly uniform, with minor tweaks here and there depending on who Weinstein was reaching out to. The attempts were in vain. The board removed him from his position later that day.

The court documents do not show any responses to Weinstein’s letters.

The emails came out as part of a massive trove contained by the Manhattan Supreme Court that was unsealed in light of Weinstein’s Feb. 24 conviction and ahead of his scheduled sentencing Wednesday. Page Six notes that the judge in the case deemed them irrelevant to the charges from two women that Weinstein was facing in New York.

Weinstein was convicted on two counts: criminal sex act for the 2006 assault on the production assistant and rape in the third degree for a 2013 attack on another woman. On the criminal sex act count, he faces a minimum of five years in prison and a maximum of 25 years, while the third-degree rape count carries a maximum penalty of four years in prison.

Madison Prewett's Dad Defends Her After The Bachelor Finale - E! NEWS

Madison Prewett's dad, Chad Prewett, is standing by her side.

The proud parent took to Twitter on Monday after The Bachelor's dramatic season finale

"Proud is an understatement," Chad tweeted. "I believe in you and support you always Madi Rose!"

He also retweeted a post that read "#TeamMadison."

The season 24 star seemed to appreciate her father's kind words.

"Love you so much," she wrote in reply.

During the finale, fans watched Peter Weber propose to Hannah Ann Sluss with a 3.27 diamond engagement ring. However, the two broke up after the pilot admitted he couldn't give the Tennessee model his whole heart. Host Chris Harrison ended up sharing the split news with Madison, who then made a surprise visit to see Peter.

However, the drama didn't end there. Hannah Ann confronted Peter at the After The Final Rose show. She claimed he "downplayed" his feelings for Madison during the proposal and that she felt completely "blindsided" by him. Later on, Madison came out and Peter professed his love for her. Although, Peter's mom, Barbara Weber, didn't seem happy about the reunion.

Barb claimed Madison made her and the rest of Peter's family wait "three hours" before coming in to see them in Australia during the final episodes and that she didn't apologize. She also alleged Madison told her she would turn down a proposal and wasn't in love with Peter.

"How do you expect a mother who loves her son with all of her heart to take that? I couldn't ... my whole family, my son Jack, my husband, Peter, and myself, you didn't see that," she told the audience. "And as a mother, that…wasn't what we were expecting. And therefore, when I said that I wanted Hannah Ann so badly, [it was] because I knew we just clicked right away. Unfortunately, we did not have that connection with Madison."

Madison insisted she has "love and respect" for Peter and his family and, therefore, would "never say a negative word about anyone or anything." Still, Barb said her son will just have to "fail to succeed."

"All his friends, all his family, everyone that knows him knows that it's not going to work," she said. "So we've been trying to help them. Would we want it to work? Yes."

Peter defended his leading lady and once again professed his love for her. Ultimately, Madison said it didn't feel right to "sit here and rehash all the things in the past."

"Honestly, this is about me and Peter, our journey, just he and I should be talking about," she said.

Prince Harry Allegedly Says Trump Has 'Blood on His Hands' in Hoax Call - Newsweek

Prince Harry allegedly said President Donald Trump has "blood on his hands" over his efforts to support increased production and use of coal in a hoax call with Russian pranksters claiming to be Greta Thunberg.

Harry was reportedly duped by YouTubers Vladimir Kuznetsov and Alexey Stolyarov—also known as Vovan and Lexus—on two occasions, once on New Year's Eve and again in late January, claims U.K. tabloid newspaper The Sun.

Kuznetsov and Stolyarov, who have previously hoaxed the likes of Elton John, French President Emmanuel Macron and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, pretended to be climate activist Greta Thunberg, 17, and her father Svante during the lengthy call. They spoke to the Duke of Sussex at length about issues ranging from climate change to Harry and Meghan Markle's departure from the royal family.

At one point in one of the calls, Harry is alleged to have told the Thunbergs: "The mere fact that Donald Trump is the pushing the coal industry so big in America, he has blood on his hands, because the effect that has on the climate and the island nations far, far away ... again, out of sight, out of mind."

"We've visited those places and I'm sure you have as well. People's lives have been completely destroyed. People are dying every single month by some form of natural disaster that has been created by this huge change to in our climate," Harry is claimed to have said.

A video of one of the calls was shared on YouTube and Facebook, claims The Sun, but it does not appear to be online at the time of publication. A short clip is still available on YouTube.

Newsweek has not been able to independently verify the authenticity of the calls or videos. A spokesperson for Prince Harry could not immediately be reached for comment.

It's claimed that Harry also spoke to the Russian pranksters about his and Meghan's exit as senior working members of the royal family. The couple took part in their final scheduled engagement in their royal roles on Monday and will officially step down as senior royals on March 31.

"I can assure you, marrying a prince or princess is not all it's made out to be," Harry is reported to have said. "But sometimes the right decision isn't always the easy one. And this decision certainly wasn't the easy one but it was the right decision for our family, the right decision to be able to protect my son."

Kuznetsov and Stolyarov have notoriously tricked world leaders, celebrities and politicians in the past in hoax phone calls subsequently shared on their YouTube channel.

Last year, the pranksters placed a call to French President Emmanuel Macron pretending to be Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy just after Zelenskiy won the vote to become Ukraine's next leader, Reuters reported at the time.

In 2015, Kuznetsov and Stolarov made global headlines when they pretended to be Russian President Vladimir Putin in a call to singer Elton John to discuss LGBT+ rights in Russia.

The pair have previously denied they are working for the Kremlin. In 2016, Stolyarov told The Guardian newspaper: "We work for ourselves, for nobody else. People are always offering us to get involved in their dirty games. I was offered $100,000 to secretly prank an MP. But we refuse."
