Movie Ticket Sales Fall to Historic Low - The New York Times

LOS ANGELES — Here is all you need to know about the mind-sets of moviegoers as the coronavirus pandemic intensifies: God beat a superhero at the weekend box office.

Seemingly every aspect of American life has been disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, and the weekend ritual of watching a movie in the dark with strangers has been no exception. Most cinemas in the United States remain open, with the two biggest chains, AMC and Regal, reducing seating capacity in auditoriums by 50 percent so that people could leave at least one empty seat between them. But fears about the coronavirus kept the masses at home: Domestic ticket sales totaled about $55.3 million, a 44 percent drop from last weekend, despite three new films — “Bloodshot,” “The Hunt” and “I Still Believe” — arriving in wide release.

It was the worst period for movie theaters in two decades, according to Comscore, which compiles box office data. The next lowest weekend was Sept. 15 to 17 in 2000, when ticket sales totaled $54.5 million and the primary draws were holdovers like “The Watcher,” a serial-killer movie, and “Nurse Betty,” a dark comedy starring RenΓ©e Zellweger. In today’s money, however, the 2000 weekend generated roughly $83 million in ticket sales.

The result: Hollywood may have just had its worst weekend since ticketing data started to be independently compiled in the 1980s.

“This weekend’s three new wide releases were not expected to do big business,” David A. Gross, who runs Franchise Entertainment Research, a movie consultancy, said in an email on Sunday. “Still, these openings are down 30 percent or more from where they would be under normal circumstances.”

The No. 1 movie was a holdover: “Onward,” the Disney-Pixar fantasy about two elf brothers who have an accident with magic, collected an estimated $10.5 million at 4,310 theaters in the United States and Canada — a 73 percent drop from its first weekend. Pixar movies typically decline between 30 percent and 45 percent from their first to second weekends, demonstrating the impact of coronavirus fears on moviegoing.

Overseas, where theaters have been closed in some countries in Europe and Asia, “Onward” took in $6.8 million. The animated film’s global total now stands at $101.7 million, Disney said.

In a surprise — at least for Hollywood — an under-the-radar new release rooted in religion, “I Still Believe,” sold the most tickets of the newcomers. It collected about $9.5 million from 3,250 theaters. “I Still Believe” (Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company) cost less than $10 million to make. A romantic drama, the film stars KJ Apa (“Riverdale”) and Britt Robertson (“Under the Dome”) and is based on the true story of the Christian singer-songwriter Jeremy Camp and his first wife Melissa Henning-Camp, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer while on their honeymoon.

Directed by Andrew Erwin and Jon Erwin, known for the 2018 faith-based hit “I Can Only Imagine,” “I Still Believe” received middling reviews. But ticket buyers gave it an A grade in CinemaScore exit polls.

The superhero movie “Bloodshot,” starring Vin Diesel, played on 2,861 screens in the United States and Canada and collected an estimated $9.3 million. Sony, Bona Film Group and Cross Creek Pictures financed “Bloodshot” for about $45 million. The companies also spent tens of millions of dollars on marketing. Reviews were not kind, and it got a B grade from CinemaScore.

Overseas, “Bloodshot” took in an additional $13 million. Russia was one of the stronger markets.

“The Hunt” (Universal and Blumhouse), a satirical horror film about elites killing “deplorables” that cost $15 million to make and tens of millions to market, collapsed with about $5.3 million in ticket sales. Reviews were mostly negative and audiences gave the movie a C-plus grade in CinemaScore exit polls.

“The Hunt,” starring the Emmy-nominated Betty Gilpin (Netflix’s “Glow”) and the two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank, had originally been scheduled for release in September, but Universal canceled that plan after 31 people were killed in back-to-back shootings in Texas and Ohio and conservative pundits criticized the film’s premise as “sick.”

Meghan Markle May Ultimately Cause 'Immense Embarrassment' for the Royal Family, Expert Claims - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex have left the royal family for a chance to live a normal life out of the spotlight. Many royal fans have wondered what’s next for the Sussexes and whether or not Meghan will return to her pre-duchess career as an actress. If she does pursue that career again, one royal expert believes it could be an “immense embarrassment” to the royal family.

Meghan had left her acting career to marry Prince Harry

When Prince Harry and Meghan announced their engagement in November 2017, she shared that she would be leaving behind her acting career.

“I just see it as a change… It’s a new chapter, right?,” she shared during an interview at the time. “And also keep in mind I’ve been working on my show for seven years. So we were very, very fortunate to be able to have that sort of longevity on a series, and for me once we hit the 100 episode marker I thought, you know what, I have — I have ticked this box and I feel really proud of the work I have done there and now it’s time to, as you said work — work as a team with [Harry].”

Meghan continued: “I think what’s been really exciting as we talk about the transition of this out of my career, but into the role, is that, as you said, the causes that have been very important to me I can focus even more energy on, because very early out of the gate I think you realize once you have access or a voice that people are going to listen to, with that comes a lot of responsibility which I take seriously.”

Meghan’s return to acting might be an ’embarrassment’ according to one expert

It’s unclear whether or not Meghan will return to her acting career following her exit from the royal family, though there have been rumors that she could do more voiceover work for Disney.

Eric Schiffer, chairman of Reputation Management Consultant, believes that if Meghan relaunches her acting career, she could create “immense embarrassment” to the queen and the royal family.

“Meghan will pursue acting causing immense embarrassment for the Royal family and drive more public backlash,” Schiffer told Express.

He added, “Hollywood in the end will dump Meghan and chew her out the way she and Buckingham Palace ditched each other.”

Does she have regrets about giving up her career?

Meghan’s acting resume includes appearances on General Hospital, Century City, The War at Home, and CSI: New York. She was also a “briefcase babe” on Deal or No Deal before finding fame on the legal drama Suits.

Sally Bedell Smith, the Queen’s biographer, believes that Meghan may have felt regret about retiring from acting. “It seems now that she really regrets having had to give that up,” Bedell Smith told Vanity Fair, sharing, “and what she was expected to do in the royal family didn’t compare with what she had been accustomed to.”

Bedell Smith further noted that joining the royal family means you give up “a lot of things that may have meant a lot to you and dedicate yourself to an institution that’s 1,000 years old.”

‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ Gets Surprise Early Digital Release - Variety

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” has hit digital channels a few days before originally scheduled.

The final installment of the original Star Wars saga became available for purchase late Friday (March 13) across digital retailers, four days before its previous March 17 release date. Disney’s early digital drop of “Rise of Skywalker” may have been spurred by the spreading coronavirus pandemic, as millions of people are staying at home amid the crisis.

“Rise of Skywalker” is available in HD for $19.99 and in 4K Ultra HD for $24.99 (via participating retailers). It’s available on Apple TV and iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Vudu, FandangoNow and Movies Anywhere. In addition, the full nine-movie “Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga” is now available through participating digital retailers.

Separately Friday, Disney unexpectedly announced that “Frozen 2” would hit the Disney Plus service in the U.S. on Sunday — three months early. The Mouse House said it was “surprising families with some fun and joy during this challenging period,” a reference to the global COVID-19 crisis.

In January, the movie crested the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. Directed by J.J. Abrams, “Rise of Skywalker” stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac and Mark Hamill.

Currently, “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” is scheduled to be released on physical DVD and in 4K Ultra HD on Blu-ray on March 31, when it also is slated to become available to rent.

Bonus material in the home-video release versions includes “The Skywalker Legacy,” a feature-length making-of documentary that goes behind the scenes with the cast and filmmakers. Other extras include featurettes about the film’s Pasaana desert scenes; Warwick Davis, who reprises his role as Wicket the Ewok; and how the Lucasfilm effects team created a record 584 creatures and droids for the film. The digital release also includes “The Maestro’s Finale,” an exclusive feature highlighting composer John Williams, who has scored every film in the Skywalker saga.

On March 31, for the first time, the release of the first eight movies on Blu-ray 4K UHD: “The Phantom Menace,” “Attack of the Clones,” “Revenge of the Sith,” “A New Hope,” “The Empire Strikes Back,” “Return of the Jedi,” “The Force Awakens” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”

'The Bachelor': ABC Executive Rob Mills on Realizing They 'Needed to Play up' Barb Weber's Feelings Towards Madison Prewett - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Peter Weber’s mother, Barbara, certainly has some strong feelings about her son’s final Bachelor pick, Madison Prewett. She made it clear during their visit in Australia, and again during the taped finale, that she doesn’t feel the foster parent recruiter is a good fit for her son.

ABC definitely picked up on the dynamic.

‘The Bachelor’ played up ‘very emotional’ Barb

Executive Rob Mills recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the finale and about realizing they “had a star on [their] hands with Peter’s mother, Barbara.”

“You can go back to last season with Hannah Brown and, certainly, her cheering and applauding her son’s prowess in the windmill (laughs) was a great moment. The parents are always great. Most of them are stars in their own right. I remember JoJo [Fletcher]’s mom chugging wine out of a bottle. But, as you saw in the clips of her with the whole ‘Bring her home’ moment, Barbara is very emotional,” began Mills.

He continued: “Peter and Madison hadn’t seen each other until up until a few weeks ago and hearing that Barbara really wasn’t pleased about that was when we realized this was an issue. And it’s a real issue that everyone deals with. Because when you’re entering into a relationship, certainly when you’re thinking about marriage, family is a big part. You are marrying into that family. At that point, we knew this was an angle that we really needed to play up. We knew Barbara was going to be great.”

Weber knew how his mother felt about Prewett (he still lives at home, after all), but even he seemed surprised at how she behaved during the taped finale. Mills says the moments Barbara spoke up about Prewett weren’t particularly planned.

“It was pretty much like, ‘Let’s see what happens.’ You don’t want to overproduce it or anything. You want it to play pretty real in the moment and that was what it was. There were definitely indications that Barbara was not happy, and I think not happy about a lot of things,” he said. “I think right now, it didn’t end the way any of them thought or maybe wanted. There was upset at the show, at Peter, at Madison. I think the only one unscathed was Hannah Ann.”

Did Peter Weber’s mom, Barb, know she was being filmed during the taped finale?

Much of Bachelor Nation paid special notice to the “Barb cam” during the finale. THR asked Mills if the pilot’s mother knew her reactions were being recorded.

“You can’t miss seeing that there’s a camera right there in front of you. You certainly know you are on camera. Do I think she knew there was a ‘Barb cam’ where viewers saw the picture-in-picture? Probably not,” he said.

But Mills pegs Barbara as an authentic woman and guesses she would have acted the same whether she knew a camera was on her or not.

“I met her and she’s a nice and good person. And I think that her emotions would have been real regardless of whether the camera was there. You saw her at the end of the show with [Bachelorette] Clare [Crawley] wishing her well and hugging her. I don’t think that her reactions would have been any different had she known there was a camera cutting to her,” he said.

Coco Austin draws mixed criticism after sharing pic breastfeeding daughter, 4 - Fox News

Coco Austin is sharing her parenting journey with the world.

Austin, 40, welcomed daughter, Chanel, 4, in 2015 with husband Ice-T, 61. The famous mom is known for being open about motherhood with her Instagram community and Friday was no different.

The mother of one shared a picture of her four-year-old daughter breastfeeding. In the snap, Chanel looks up at her mom as her right hand lies on Austin's face. While the model's post garnered criticism from some of her 3 million followers, Austin declared she wasn't at all bothered by it.

"At a time when the world feels like its coming to an end.. suck up as much love as you can!I" Austin captioned the photo, seemingly calling attention to the current coronavirus pandemic. "I know the moms out there will appreciate this pic! Ive been getting alot of props in the breasfeeding community and get tons of emails from woman/moms appreciating me bringing light to the subject."

"I write a baby blog about my journey with Chanel and soon I will write about what it's like to continue boob time with a 4 year old.. I get tons and tons of requests that want me to speak on it! At this point in nursing its just for comfort and believe me the girl loves meat so its not like she isnt eating real food...😁"

Ice-T's wife also thanked all of the fellow moms out there who are "eager" to see and hear about her journey.

"Us moms are connected," she added.

Actress Selma Blair rallied behind Austin, commenting, "I love this. Lucky girl."

Another one of Austin's followers also supported Austin's breastfeeding choices despite some critics in the comments section calling it "insane" to breastfeed a four-year-old.

"Yessss it's tough too nurse that long," wrote the fan. "I did til age 3 with my first born."

Several Instagram users questioned Austin about the act, with one wondering if she often gets glares from others when doing so.

"No because I don't do it in their face," Austin replied.

The happy mom also responded to the naysayers with pride. When one fan called breastfeeding a four-year-old "disturbing" and asked if Chanel "still wears diapers too," the famous mom replied openly, "No she's been pottied (sic) trained since 2 years old."

Austin is known for being an open book with her fans. Last October, she defended herself after fans shot her down for posting a set of sexy shots on Instagram.
