Coronavirus Early Digital Releases: List of Movies on VOD Early - /FILM

coronavirus early digital releases

As the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic grows and more businesses and movie theaters close, Hollywood studios have been left with nowhere to drop their theatrical releases. While some studios chose to delay their biggest feature films until the worst of the pandemic passes, a few studios decided to break the monotony of everyone’s self-isolation (and help keep a few kids entertained) by releasing their theatrical films on digital platforms early. Most films available to buy digitally about 74 days after they first arrive in theaters, but studios are breaking that tradition by releasing their films on VOD mere weeks after, or even on the same day of, the theatrical debut.

Here is an ongoing list of the films that have been or will be released early.

For Digital Rental or Purchase

Trolls World Tour – April 10

Universal changed the game by announcing the day-and-date release of Trolls World Tour, which was originally set to hit only theaters on April 10. But earlier this week, the studio announced that Trolls World Tour would be made available on-demand on the same day it hits theaters.

Birds of Prey – March 24

In what almost seemed like a response to Universal’s VOD announcements (or at least to director Cathy Yan’s enthusiasm for the move), Warner Bros. announced that Birds of Prey will be available for digital purchase on March 24, for $19.99 to buy on platforms such as Amazon, FandangoNOW, iTunes, PlayStation, Vudu, Xbox and others. The film will be available to rent on April 7 on Video On Demand services from cable and satellite providers, and on select gaming consoles. That means Birds of Prey will be available only 46 days after its initial theatrical release on February 7.

Just Mercy – March 24

The same day as its Birds of Prey announcement, Warner Bros. made the Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx legal drama Just Mercy available to buy digitally — way earlier than planned for the true-story drama released on December 25. However, if you’re waiting to rent the movie digital on VOD, it will be available starting on March 24.

The Gentlemen – March 24

Fandango reported that the Guy Ritchie-directed crime caper would be available for digital purchase on March 24 alongside Birds of Prey.  The Gentlemen will be available 60 days after it hit theaters on January 24.

Bloodshot – March 24

Less than two weeks after it hit theaters, Vin Diesel’s Bloodshot will be available for digital purchase starting March 24. That’s less than a two-week turnaround time for Sony, which is almost unheard of. But it’s expected after the disastrous box office weekend that Bloodshot opened to, despite being apparently the last film to hit theaters ever.

The Invisible Man – March 20

Along with its game-changing announced for the day-and-date release of Trolls World Tour, Universal announced that the Elisabeth Moss-starring horror film The Invisible Man would be available for “a 48-hour rental period at a suggested retail price of $19.99 in the U.S. and the price equivalent in international markets” on March 20. The film, directed by Leigh Whannel, would hit VOD only three weeks after it premiered in theaters on February 28.

Emma. – March 20

The Focus Features period piece, which falls under Universal, will also be available for the “48-hour rental period at a suggested retail price of $19.99 in the U.S. and the price equivalent in international markets” on March 20. Anya Taylor-Joy stars in the Jane Austen adaptation directed by Autumn de Wilde, which initially hit limited theaters on February 21 — making its VOD debut also only three weeks later.

The Hunt – March 20

Universal’s The Hunt has the shortest window between its theatrical debut and its VOD release: only 7 days after its March 13 release. Like the two previous films, the controversial Craig Zobel thriller will be available for the “48-hour rental period at a suggested retail price of $19.99 in the U.S. and the price equivalent in international markets.”

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – March 13

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was made available for purchase digitally on iTunes and Vudu on March 13 — four days before its intended for release on digital platforms on March 17.

On Streaming

Frozen 2 – March 15

Frozen 2 arrived on Disney+ early on March 15,  three months before the animated musical sequel otherwise would have arrived on the streaming service. In a press release, the studio said they wanted to give families “some fun and joy during this challenging period.” For the many families having to deal with kids bored at home, this probably a godsend.

Big Time Adolescence – March 13

The Pete Davidson drama which earned a positive reception at last year’s Sundance Film Festival hit theaters on March 13 and was initially supposed to begin streaming on Hulu on March 20. But Big Time Adolescence suddenly debuted on Hulu on the same day of its theatrical release, a week earlier than it was scheduled to.

Coronavirus Forces Movie Studios to Reckon With Collapsing Theatrical Windows - Hollywood Reporter

As theaters across the U.S. shut down, studios are experimenting with releasing on-demand, but for tentpoles "the math really doesn't work."

As the global coronavirus pandemic has shut down movie theaters around the world, the film business faces a potentially transformative question: Should studios hold movies for a later, indefinitely postponed theatrical release or make them available as online attractions now?

While NBCUniversal and Sony Pictures are offering films on a pay-per-view basis, media analyst Rich Greenfield says “they're doing this out of complete distress and as some kind of unique learning experience rather than as a shift in strategy.”

A statement from Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman as the studio announced a March 24 on-demand release of the Vin Diesel movie Bloodshot underscored the unusual nature of the decision. “Sony Pictures is firmly committed to theatrical exhibition and we support windowing,” he said. “This is a unique and exceedingly rare circumstance.”

While the on-demand model may work or at least mitigate the damage for some movies that are shut out of theaters due to the virus, Greenfield says, “the math really doesn't work” for big films. For low-budget or mid-range movies, releasing them on demand remains a gamble — an exercise in trying to solve an equation when variables are unknown.

NBCUniversal is making The Invisible Man, The Hunt and Focus Features' Emma available on demand, as well as — most significantly, in terms of budget — the upcoming DreamWorks Animation sequel Trolls World Tour. The movies will be available for a 48-hour rental period on all on-demand platforms, with a suggested price of $19.99 in the U.S. and equivalent in international markets, starting March 20.

So far Trolls, with its April 10 release date, is the only film that has had no domestic theatrical run that is set to debut as a pay-per-view offering. The 2016 original made $347 million worldwide on a budget of $125 million. The budget for the Trolls sequel is said to be above $90 million and the studio is locked into spending tens of millions on advertising. (The other films had abbreviated runs in theaters. Invisible Man grossed $64 million, Emma pulled in $9.9 million; The Hunt took in $5.3 million during its very short release.) Sony’s Bloodshot opened in theaters briefly on March 13 and grossed an estimated $9.3 million as the coronavirus crisis advanced.

Greenfield says that when it comes to the math of releasing a big-budget studio film on pay-per-view, much is unknown. “Let's say [Universal] thought Trolls would be a $600 million film. They could have made $260 million out of the theatrical window. At $20, can they sell 13 million copies? It's a big data point. They're going to learn a lot from doing Trolls,” he says.

But one veteran exec is skeptical. “No parent is looking to pay $20 so a child can watch a movie one or two times in the house,” he says. If a kid wanted to watch the Trolls sequel, he says, a parent — especially one with financial worries — might suggest watching Frozen 2 instead. Not only is a month’s subscription to Disney+ much cheaper than a movie on demand, but a child can stream a favorite movie over and over. And streamers have conditioned the public to wait for an on-demand movie to become available as part of their subscription. Overall, he says, “the pay-per-view business is likely to get smashed between a recession and streaming.” (He adds that he understands why Universal parent Comcast, as a cable operator and owner of Sky, would try to promote on-demand viewing.)

As for a potential blockbuster film aimed at more quadrants, Greenfield says no studio is likely to launch a movie with the potential to gross $1 billion on-demand, even in the current crisis. That explains Universal’s decision to push F9, the ninth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise, into 2021. (While some in the industry have speculated the studio might consider putting the film on its forthcoming Peacock streaming service to generate excitement — especially if the Olympics are postponed — studio sources rule that out, especially as the Peacock service is not international and the films derive a lot of revenue from China and Latin America. Minions: The Rise of Gru, set for the July 4 weekend, might be another option for Peacock, if the crisis does not abate, but the 2015 original grossed $1.2 billion.)

The pay-per-view strategy makes the most sense for low-budget films or movies that didn’t seem likely to pull in stellar box-office numbers had they held out for theaters. “For The Hunt or Bloodshot, something like this could be a real good opportunity,” says one exec whose company released one of those films.

Greenfield points out that the most successful pay-per-view event to date — the 2015 Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight — grossed $400 million in the U.S. “That was for a once-in-a-lifetime event where if you didn't pay for it in the moment, it had no value,” Greenfield says. “One question is, is there urgency for a pay-per-view movie the way there is for a sporting event? The answer is probably not."

On the other hand, the Mayweather-Pacquiao revenue had to be split among various parties. With pay-per-view, a Universal exec notes, “the services [that distribute the films] have very little to do, so the split on VOD is going to be heavily favorable to the studio.” And in the current crisis, with millions of consumers stuck at home with their children, who knows how much a new movie like Trolls World Tour might be worth to a family?

Meanwhile, challenged theater owners fear that the premium VOD offerings could be perceived by the public as a permanent change. One source says some theater owners across the globe were angered when Universal announced its plans. A longtime studio exec says their anxiety is justified, especially as a pay-per-view rental is probably cheaper for a couple than a night at the movies. “People from 13 to 30 have already completely changed the way they consume entertainment,” he says. “The question is, will this shift another generation of people from 30 to 50?”

The National Association of Theater Owners released a statement on Tuesday in defense of the theatrical model. "People will return to movie theaters because that is who people are,” the group said. “When they return they will rediscover a cutting edge, immersive entertainment experience that they have been forcefully reminded they cannot replicate at home." NATO is calling on Congress and the administration for relief, “to ensure that America’s movie theater industry and its tens of thousands employees across the country can remain resilient.”

Jimmy Fallon's Kids Crash At-Home Monologue, Tell Him He's Not Funny - TooFab

Working from home proved to be a little distracting for Jimmy Fallon.

"The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" has been shooting new monologues everyday from self-isolation this week, with the host recruiting his family members to help him out.

Wife Nancy Juvonen worked the camera, while 6-year-old daughter Winnie took over for The Roots and the graphic department. 5-year-old Frances, however, was slightly less professional as uninvited cohost.

As Fallon started to speak, Frances literally crashed the scene by shooting down a slide into the room and proceeding to climb all over her father.

"I'm gonna tell some jokes. Want to stand there and laugh at daddy if they're funny?" he then asked his family. "If you hear a joke you think is funny, laugh at it."

They laughed, but it wasn't at what he was saying. Instead Frances kept crawling all over her dad, as Winnie repeatedly stepped in front of the camera lens.

When he asked whether she liked his jokes, Frances flat out told him, "No."

The failed monologue was followed by an interview with Lin-Manuel Miranda, who video conferenced his way into the show from his own home.

The two promoted their charity of the day, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, before the "Hamilton" creator performed "Dear Theodosia" from the show.

Tom Hanks' sister says actor is 'not good, but still okay' amid coronavirus diagnosis - Fox News

Tom Hanks' sister is opening up about the actor's positive coronavirus diagnosis, reminding fans that being an actor doesn't make him immune from the worldwide pandemic.

The "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" star, 63, has continued to provide fans updates about his and wife Rita Wilson's symptoms -- the latest being that their fevers are gone but they're still enduring "the blahs."

Now, Hanks' sister, Sandra Hanks Benoiton, broke her silence about his diagnosis as she remains in Italy under quarantine.

CAN YOU CATCH CORONAVIRUS FROM SURFACES?

"I have communicated with my brother. He's not great, but still OK," Sandra told the Daily Mail.

Asked if she was shocked by her brother's diagnosis, Sandra replied: "No. He's an actor, not a God [but] medical care in Australia is good."

According to the outlet, Sandra and her family moved to Italy in 2016. She is currently in the Pordenone province of Italy and her family is doing "okay." They are expected to remain on lockdown until April 3.

Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton May Have Interacted At Commonwealth Day After All - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton seemed to ignore each other at the Commonwealth Day service. The event marked Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and Prince Harry’s final joint public appearance before their exit becomes official. Although it looked like Meghan and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, barely said anything to each other, one royal exit believes they may have interacted more during Commonwealth Day.

Kate Middleton seemingly ignores the Sussexes

Meghan and Harry took part in a slew of royal engagements before making their final appearance for the cameras at the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey. All of the high-ranking members of the royal family were in attendance, setting the Sussexes up for a big reunion.

But fans were very disappointed when Meghan and Harry barely interacted with their royal counterparts. Not only were they left out of Queen Elizabeth’s grand procession, but they only exchanged brief greetings with William and Kate during the service.

When the Cambridges were shown to their seats, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry seemingly said hello to the couple, who did not gesture back. According to Express, royal expert Maggie Rulli thought the royals missed an opportunity to show a sense of unity, especially in light of recent events.

“The moment a lot of people are talking about is where they had the chance to have the optics of unity,” Rulli shared. “A lot of the younger royals were sitting together and it appears in this moment Meghan sort of mouths hello to William and Kate who are sitting nearby to them and it appears no one gestures back.”

That said, there is a chance that the couples interacted more than what fans witnessed on the live broadcast.

Did Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton interact more at Commonwealth Day?

Royal expert Omid Scobie noted that everyone was watching a live feed during the event and that the cameras were not always focused on Meghan and Harry. It is entirely possible that the Cambridges and Sussexes interacted more, the cameras just didn’t capture it.

“I think we need to point out that we are going off a live feed from inside the Abbey that didn’t remain on the couples at all times,” Scobie explained. “So as much as I would like to talk about it definitely there is always the chance that something took place when the camera wasn’t on them.”

Scobie admitted that the moment that was featured in the live feed seemed like a “frosty reception,” something the royals probably wanted to avoid at all costs. For reference, Kate and Meghan exchanged a warm kiss on the cheek during last year’s Commonwealth Day service.

Regardless of what happened when the cameras were not rolling, Scobie believes the royals missed a huge opportunity to show the world that everything is okay between the Cambridges and the Sussexes.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry returned to Canada, where they are expected to remain until their exit becomes official on March 31. At that time, the pair will cease using their royal titles and will be spending most of their time in North America.

Prince Harry leans on his wife for support

Body language experts have also examined the footage from the Commonwealth Day service and believe that Harry was showing clear signs of stress and “tension” throughout the event.

According to Mirror, expert Judi James argued that Harry was very tense when he and Meghan Markle arrived at Westminster Abbey and often touched his wedding ring for comfort.

“When he arrived, the minute he and Meghan had to drop hands, he immediately reached for his wedding ring which is a self comfort,” James stated. “Even when she was beside him after they had stopped holding hands, he was missing her, needing her support.”

Like other royal experts, James thought the greeting between the Sussexes and the Cambridges was very “odd.” Although she thought Harry and Kate exchanged a warm smile, the Duke of Sussex was “more rigid” when his attention turned to William.

Prior to Meghan and Harry’s exit, there were a plethora of rumors about Harry and William feuding. Their relationship has certainly been strained at times, and Harry’s decision to leave the royal family probably didn’t smooth things over between the brothers.

Meghan Markle and Queen Elizabeth fight before her wedding

Speaking of feuds, a recently unearthed report claims that Meghan and Queen Elizabeth got into a huge fight prior to her 2018 wedding.

According to Express, an insider said that Queen Elizabeth denied Meghan’s request to wear a certain tiara for her wedding. Harry was reportedly very angry when he heard the news and Queen Elizabeth quickly put her foot down.

“Meghan had her heart set on this tiara with emeralds in it and Prince Harry hit the roof when they were told it was impossible for her to wear it,” the source shared. “There was a very heated exchange that prompted the Queen to speak to Harry. She said: ‘Meghan cannot have whatever she wants. She gets what tiara she’s given by me.’”

Meghan and Harry tied the knot in a gorgeous ceremony in the spring of 2018. Before her relationship with Harry, the former Suits star married Trevor Engelson, whom she divorced in 2013.

Despite all the drama surrounding their final engagement, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have not commented on their interaction with William and Kate. Queen Elizabeth will re-examine the move in 12 months, though the chances of them returning to the monarchy is regrettably slim.
